Gladiator (2000)
A classic! I am entertained.
A Roman emperor that is betrayed and left for dead, finds himself in chains, but seeks to take an opportunity for revenge when it comes his way.
.
I remember watching this at the cinema on release and being blown away. One of those films that I knew I just had to own and watched it multiple times. It is a favourite, but I hadn't watched it for about 10 years.
I think I enjoyed it more than ever this time.
.
This is simply a masterpiece.
(I do think the extra 15 minutes of the extended cut make it even better).
.
Crowe and Phoenix are superbly cast and deliver exquisite performances, particularly Phoenix who exudes wickedness and provides a character which has you longing for his comeuppance.
.
The cinematography and also the use of CGI captures the time and setting, and gives a splendid visual interpretation of Rome at the height of its power.
.
The theme 'Now we are free' plays a massive part in this film, and the offering from Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard is powerful and captures the spirituality so well.
.
The story is superb and you cannot help but long to join with Maximus in his quest for vengeance. It grabs hold of me each time and won't let me go until long after the credits roll.
.
Superb all round and so many quotable lines.
.
Yes Maximus, Without doubt, I was entertained.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Another masterpiece from Waititi
How can a film about a kid and Adolf Hitler be funny?
That is what I asked myself, but this film does it, and so much more.
Funny, sensitive, compelling, harrowing and hope giving, wrapped up in beautiful cinematography and supported by a quality soundtrack.
A special film.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Absolutely love this film
This is a cinematic masterpiece.
When I watch a film I look for a few things:
1) To be entertained 2) To see and hear the story being told 3) To be moved
Most films will achieve number 1, some will get 1 and 2 but few do all 3 and very few do all 3 well.
This is one of those very few films that has ticked those boxes.
I was looking forward to this film since I had seen the trailer for the first time.
I was not disappointed. I absolutely loved it and it went straight into the top 10 films that I have ever seen.
The story if you haven't heard is of a young soldier who signs up to join the US army in WW2. Due to his faith and strong beliefs he does so as a medic as he has no intention of killing another human.
The first hour of the film tells the story of the man and his family, the girl and helps the viewer understand the kind of man that he is.
The second half is his experience of signing up and ultimately the portrayal of his exploits on the battle fields in Japan.
For me the film showed a glimpse into the horror of war and also the power of human courage and spirit as well as the strength of faith and conviction.
The battle scenes were harrowing and it really helped me to start to imagine the brutality of it.
This was the first time in my life that I have wanted to clap in the cinema as a film ended. I didn't but I wanted to.
Gibson did a great job with the direction of this film. Great story telling and superbly shot. Garfield was superb too with an honourable mention to Vince Vaughan whose character has some superb lines.
The film was inspirational and utterly engaging from start to finish.
I had a lump in my throat and started welling up on multiple occasions.
Moving, compelling and made even better by the fact that it is a true story.

Arrival (2016)
So much right about this film
I went to see arrival today. I had heard and read nothing but good things about it, without knowing much more than I had seen on the trailer. I honestly think the less you know about this film before you see it the better it will be. It is superbly acted in particular by Adams who so much of it rises and falls. The film is superb at showcasing the flaws and the strengths of the entire human race. It follows a similar suit to many films of the genre, in that the fate of humanity seems to rest on a couple (but mainly one) unassuming hero(ine). That is where the cliché ends. I found the whole thing much more believable than the majority of 'Aliens have landed' films. It was emotional, incredibly human and totally believable...to a point.
As the title says, there is so much that 'Arrival' does right but the scientific theory behind how the whole resolution is reached is largely nonsensical and a bit silly.
The notion is nice but it was just a leap too far for me to get on board with.
After that blip in my viewing delight though I was thrust back into the film.
It ended with me asking moral questions of myself, trying to empathise with the main character and admiring the choices that they make, whilst still wrestling with the question 'What would I do?'
A really good film that I felt utterly drawn into.
Wrong Side of Town (2010)
Simply awful
In the top 5 worst films that I have ever seen. I giggled a bit due to that fact that it was so bad. The acting was horrendous, the plot was embarrassingly bad. I am not sure what else to write that con do justice to how bad this film was. The description of the film was quite promising but I don't think it is an easy thing to make a film that is so poor. As well as the acting and the script, the stereotypes and clichés were horrendous. I am not convinced that it is not meant as satire. You will be disappointed if you watch it for any other reason than if you are doing an essay on bad films. If you are doing such an essay watch the film as it will give you plenty of examples.
