Kristy (2014)
A completely satisfying horror/thriller
Let me start off by saying this movie is completely worth a 10 star review. The only thing keeping me from giving this is that I thought the main character made some dumb decisions at points which seemed unnatural to the character the movie had set her up to be. Along with this I was upset at a few of the decisions made in the fates of some characters. But overall this movie is one of my favorites ever. I've always loved movies with a strong, smart main character who does not take any crap from anyone. The cryptic-ness of the explanation behind the use of Kristy was quite interesting and led to a very powerful ending and overall the whole movie satisfied everything I look for in a horror movie. The creepiness, the almost ghostly-haunted feel of the empty campus and how alone the main character truly was along with the smart decisions and quick-thinking she showed all put the movie into a smart and believable horror movie.
I cannot recommend this movie enough, please watch.
The Den (2013)
Don't watch if you want to feel safe on the internet.
Now going into this I may be a little biased as I like found footage horror movies (as long as they aren't like Paranormal activity and such) and I find stuff related to internet stalking and the deep web EXTREMELY creepy. I found this movie to be quite terrifying and eerie. The way it begins sets it up seeming fairly innocent while fitting in the normal stuff you'd expect going through anonymous video chats, however it soon becomes much creepier. Don't read after this if you don't want spoilers.
One of the few things that utterly terrified me about this movie is how it began with a single killer, then transitioned to show another with him. It felt very natural and creepy. However I was caught off guard when they begin showing that its not just 2 but 10+ people possibly even more into the hundreds who were doing this internet stalking and murdering. I did not expect this at all but it was completely believable and very smart in my opinion.
I was also completely surprised by the ending, after watching lots of movies where someone lives to tell the tale, or the female main character beats the bad guys down (which I do love). I was not at all expecting everyone to die and for the guys to continue on. It completely terrified me as its not always common in horror movies as there seems to be a thing in horror movies since the very beginning that evil must be vanquished, so it was refreshing to see a change. And the kid walking in on his Dad paying to watch people die was just completely uncomfortable. For hours after watching I felt very untrustworthy of everyone around me and very uncomfortable at the thought that someone I love could be paying to watch these things.
Overall it is a great movie. A little too torture porn-y at times and too much blood and gore for my taste but still overall a great movie, definitely worth a watch.
The Shrine (2010)
Amazing ideas not perfectly translated to film, but still quite awesome.
What I have to give to this movie is that it has one of the most interesting stories and ideas that I have seen in recent horror. I won't spoil the story but will mention that it focuses around a town with a secret, and the secret is such a cool and creepy idea. This alone makes me love this movie. The lack of translation for the characters when they speak in their foreign language along with the unsettling atmosphere of the town help make this film and its story feel believable and the characters, except maybe the main female character are very likable. My main complaints are that the acting is not exactly on par, mainly with the main characters who occasionally seem uncomfortable with their lines or like they are overacting certain scenes. It however is not enough to really take you out of the story and luckily the story uses blood/gore to its benefit and does not overdo it too badly. This is the kind of movie that makes me want to know more than we are shown/told and wishes for lore behind the story to come out. Overall, definitely worth watching, just don't expect a masterpiece.
Creep (2014)
An example of what found footage horror should be.
Creep is a subtle yet uncomfortable experience of a horror film, in the best way. Unlike other found footage there's little reliance on jump scares and gore and more of a building tension created through the conversation and actions of Mark Duplass' character. Some of his actions can seem harmless and yet hides an underlying creepiness which becomes more visible as the movie goes on. I was pleasantly surprised by the structure of this film and it will definitely keep your interest as long as you give it a chance. Best way to describe the feeling this movie emitted to me is a beginning of second hand embarrassment and uncomfortableness to pure creepiness and an unsettling atmosphere. Whether you're a fan of found footage or not, I believe you will love this, just don't expect many jump scares or much blood and gore.
