Gemini Man (2019)
Meh!
Other than two cool excellently shot action sequences, this movie is quite weak, the script is bad, the dialog is atrocious, many of the things don't even make sense. Not even Will Smith's charisma can save this dud.
Ad Astra (2019)
Beautiful movie, but not a great movie
This movie is gorgeous and the sound and camera work really makes you feel a certain claustrophobia even though you're in space, it does a great job making you feel the loneliness and desperation of the character a sense of being trapped in space. My issue with this movie is that there is a big plot hole and is what carries the movie forward, I think that the motivation for taking the main character to space made no sense and that lost me.
I still think is worth seeing, it reminded me at parts of 2001 space odyssey and Apocalypse now (IN SPACE!)
Midsommar (2019)
Weirdly entertaining
I enjoyed the movie, although I could see how people, that even if they can endure some of the shocking parts of the film, may not like it. The pacing is slow, but to me it did not feel boring, it has its funny moments and the movie is beautifully shot.
I especially enjoyed the juxtaposition of the politeness and niceness of the swedes with the horrible acts that were happening in th cult. You can tell that they don't really see these acts as something wrong, but as an expression of faith, which made it for me extra chilling and real.
The main actress gave a great performance, but I felt that other than her the rest of the characters were one-dimensional and I did not really care for any of them.
Another issue that I have with the movie is that they leave unexplored what happened to Dani's family, I thought it was a wasted opportunity. The way how they played this tragedy I thought it would have more influence in the movie, but it was just a plot device.
Une vie violente (2017)
First review
This movie made me write my first review and for all the wrong reasons.
The story telling is lacking weight, I did not feel emotionally engaged with the main character for several reasons: the dialogs were just people fighting and and spewing political mambo jambo, the one dimensional characters only emotion was anger, there were too many secondary characters which were just interchangeable and there was no attempt of creating a connection with the main character to care for any of them.
I did not care for the story of Stephan because the director did not make me care for this character, I was just hoping that he would get killed so the movie would be over.
The timeline was also confusing as there were no establishing shots to know where we were, suddenly we are in prison and the next shot we are in a bar without knowing why.
I think this was a very interesting story that just missed all the marks in storytelling.
