The Mask of Zorro (1998)
Finally, an entertaining movie!
I was enthralled by this story of Zorro, a man who had lost everything including his way...only to twenty years later train a man who had saved him as a boy. This story was something that would completely disinterest me on a usual basis, and I admit if I didn't like the first twenty minutes of it I would have stopped. But that was completely not the case. The Mask Of Zorro has everything...a villain, a hero, another hero and a beautiful woman...not to mention a very beautiful man. I would recommend this movie to anyone who thinks that they don't like action or period pieces. Needless to say that I am anticipating the sequel. Zorro, who knew?
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969)
our sickening love of watching trainwrecks
The first time I saw this movie that revealed the exploitation of a starving generation I didn't think much of it, more I was just like, "Woah." But this film stuck with me months after I saw it. I drew many parallels to the depression era trend and to reality television today. The mere difference is only that in the 30's people were dancing for their supper...now they're embarrassing themselves for plasma tvs and hummers. Michael Sarrazzin and Jane Fonda were so rightfully cast as Robert and GLoria. Robert was more or less accidentally entered into the dance contest and GLoria has made a profession out of doing anything to get out of her life that has been so obviously riddle with misery. The movie is a gift from Sydney Pollack and no one actress could possibly have breathed life into GLoria Beatty the way that Jane Fonda did.
White Chicks (2004)
Easy White Chocolate...
I would have never seen this movie if it wasn't for younger siblings. It's the kind of movie you don't think you will ever see and I saw it and I laughed again and again.
I didn't find it racist because I found the comedy mostly geared toward differences between men and women and the most hilarious aspects of the film come from the Wayan's brothers dressing up as the girls and the tribulations they have.
Personally I can understand how anyone over the age of twenty might not find it as funny. It's a comedy mostly geared toward younger people in the way of Night at the Roxbury or even Clueless. My advice would be to see it but don't expect too much...maybe you'll like it.
A Touch of Class (1973)
Pass the Doritoes and Get Me a Beer, Woman!
I had waited a very long time to see this movie and when I got the DVD I wasn't disappointed.
Seeing the chemistry between Segal (who I never realized was such a useful actor) and Jackson (who I furrowed my brow at in Women In Love) was magic to me. And I felt sorry when they were going through hard times and I felt amused when Jackson did her best to keep up appearances.
I liked the way the movie ended as well. Everything neatly in order unless you count the shattered remains of broken hearts.
I would definitely wish to see this movie again.
Meet the Fockers (2004)
I guess I love Babs too much
I admit the whole Gay Focker thing is a bit contrived and a bit overdone. How many bad days can this guy possibly have? And I also can admit that Robert Deniro's character of a meddling father/spy is old again after the first half an hour, but the comedic genius of Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman as the parents of gay. Too funny. I have never laughed so hard and smiled so long during a movie in my life. It was a great comeback for her after what was it, ten years.. I am glad she got to work her old chemistry with Dustin. Pretty sweet. I love the feel of the film, the kind of relaxed feeling that you get at Fockers house. I guess the moral of the movie is, love your family. No matter how weird they are, no matter how embarrassing.
