Doctor Who: Kerblam! (2018)
Finally...
This is the first episode of the new series that has delivered exactly what I expect of Doctor Who, and the first that I've rated over 5 stars. They managed to get some social commentary in whilst having a real sci-fi plot that kept you guessing; a balance that was sorely lacking in previous episodes.
If the rest of the season is like this then I'll be happy.
Doctor Who: The Tsuranga Conundrum (2018)
Well at least it was sci-fi
The trouble with the current series is a writer that can't seem to get to grips with, or doesn't care about, complex sci-fi characters and plot elements. It wasn't the worst, but I'd still describe it as fast food sci-fi, rather than anything that deserves the Doctor Who name.
I'd like to see future episodes contain more of the depth and intrigue we have seen in previous years.
Doctor Who: Arachnids in the UK (2018)
Missing an ending
The episode started with lots of promise, it could have easily been one of the best given the strong start. Sadly, they seemed to be unsure what to do with the main plot element - giant genetically engineered spiders - after the reveal.
This culminated in an episode which just fizzled out rather than ended properly. I'm guessing the script writers just didn't know what to do with the spiders without offending some group of people, which is given some credence by them having the doctor chew out a guy for killing a spider that was dying a slow and painful death anyway.
I've got no problem with these social commentary episodes, but they really do need the comprehensive storyline to carry the message across.
