Great places that need a new gude
13 January 2021
As I'm not able to travel myself I always enjoy TV programmes that take us on a journey, showing us interesting places and people. Sadly I can't watch this now without getting upset that Portillo is enjoying explorations that he and his fellow Brexiteers have made much harder for British people. Of course with his Spanish passport he can continue to travel around Europe quickly and as often as he likes. I hope the BBC don't continue to pay him for trips that his campaigning has made difficult for his viewers. Let's have some European guides introduce us to their countries instead?!

Powerful investigation with its own moral flaws
1 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Compelling personal stories and revelations of institutional interference and academic arrogance make this a film that keeps you thinking long after it's finished. It raises questions about the government supported bodies involved that I hope will continue to be investigated. You cannot fail to be moved by the stories of the brothers and sisters in the 'project', their sorrow and anger. I was however disturbed by the shift from telling the story to blaming individuals that occured towards the end. Focussing on the parenting style of one of the adoptive fathers and linking it with the son's suicide is morally wrong and, in the context of an expose of dubious scientific methods, incredibly hypocritical. Making a judgement on nature vs nurture based on three families is ridiculous, harmful and is perpetuating the moral and scientific flaws of the original experiment. This sensationalist pointing the finger detracts from what could have been a great film.

Great idea let down by poor storylines
15 June 2018
Started so well, but increasingly ridiculous plots. I'm used to that from Midsomer Murders and would be worried if it suddenly got serious. The Morse heritage however suggests complexity and depth. Wonderful actors and obvious hard work from everyone involved to create atmosphere and authenticity. The character development doesn't always ring true however and the red herrings far too obvious and conclusions rather daft.
