Reviews
The Covenant (2023)
Fulfilling, Interestingly-Paced & Partially Non-Fiction.
Didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did but you can trust the reviews. Despite the bleak premise it tells a story about honour & bond.
The structure of the movie is what makes it interesting. It makes good use of the slowing pace to make for a still interesting transition before the final climax.
Even though slow motion is used quite often & might feel a bit overused, it is arguably used in appropriately.
Loved the songs they choose in the movie. The music score while not being memorable for me is on point for the movie.
I also love the characters in the story. Jake Gyllenhaal, Dar Salim, Antony Starr, Emily Beecham & even Alexander Ludwig. Even if not all of them performed their best or get enough screen time, they are supported through their roles in the story.
After listing out what I love & like about the movie, it is also my duty to point out the flaw of this movie on how shallow they portray the Talibans & American contract soldiers in black & white. At multiple parts it felt like the movie is an American propaganda.
To be fair it works in favour of the plot of the movie, but people need to be aware & keep in mind of it since the movie tries to portray itself as retelling what has happened in Afghanistan. It may have mirrored a lot that has happened there, but there are still enough things that is not told in the movie.
The commentary on the bureaucracy of US government is legit, but I honestly think the US government can't afford to easily give visas to Afghanistan as well for security reasons - but what do I know, I'm not even a US citizen.
With that said, this movie is still a solid one that I believe in the future still has value to be rewatched. This movie deserves a 7+ stars.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
An overblown family drama
That is what it really is in actuality.
Nevertheless, the acting, the music, the visuals are all top notch despite its ridiculousness.
A movie that can make you cry & also feel stupid at the same time. Some side stuff promoting lesbians & bdsm.
This is coming from someone that is not particularly interested in family drama & teenage/young adult genre.
If you're used used to reading comics/manga/animation & a movie enthusiast, you would probably not be blown away by this movie as much as the hype would suggest.
My mistake was going into the movie with very high expectations. Regardless of that, I still enjoyed it though at the same time felt bothered.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Wacky & Meta Thor Movie
The theme for this movie was interesting & serious, but handled lightly & playfully.
Asgardians lost their identity/culture to fit more with the movie's audience, specifically kids.
Instead of only having breaking the 4th wall for jokes, we have breaking the 4th wall to change the universe as well.
The production quality felt more like an episode of a tv show.
Thor's & Jane character development was nicely done. Gorr was good but was underutilised. Stormbreaker's development just felt out of place.
Disney will probably attract new generation of viewers, but this movie is just not it. Hope to get a more polished Thor movie before it ends.
Sigeuneol (2016)
If the idea intrigues you, just watch it.
A solid crime drama with a mix of supernatural. The mystery & tension keeps the plot engaging throughout the series. There could be multiple arcs in an episode.
Due to how well the story is written & executed, I believe even someone that is usually not into crime drama will appreciate this series.
People either have watched other series and be amazed by this drama or trying to find other dramas like it but are left feeling unsatisfied.
All that is left is hoping for the second season which have been delayed for a few years now apparently.
Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan (2022)
A Cultural Wave
A dramatisation of true historical events that intrigued the crowd that it intended to & more.
The plot progression is crazy, you move from one scene to another keeping the viewers engaged.
While the performance from the protagonists are amazing, it was dragged down by the stark contrast of the weak performance by one of the main antagonists, Captain Syers.
The dialogues ranges from amazing & inspirational to repetitive & monotonous. Some fits the theme & plot very well, while others are too declarative (in storytelling) or out of nowhere (Freemason & New World Order, what?)
Non-stop action & you won't get enough of the Silat choreographies. While it left some Silat enthusiasts wanting more, it has attracted many younger generations.
A very interesting theme, engaging story, good acting, successful social engagement.
It has all the right factors to be good enough for it to take the Malaysian film industry AND Malaysians by storm.
This movie not only brought a breath of fresh air for Malaysian's expectations of local films, but a step towards the rise of a nation. For that it deserves +1.
Moonfall (2022)
Plain & Stupid Good Ol' Sfi-Fi Action Drama
A movie for Sci-Fi movie junkies, not for the enthusiasts & geeks. It has an interesting idea & lore, and beautiful visuals... and that's about it.
It at least has a clear plot progression that drives the story.
The good actors are limited by the average dialogues, insufficient character development & messy plot.
The story felt like it could've been written way better (despite the 4 years spent writing it).
At one point, the side characters saw a meteor crashing into the mountain which they just turned away & continued walking like it was Wednesday.
Some scenes are meant to be laughed at.
Despite some frustrations, I still enjoyed watching the movie due to the main character's storyline.
If there's a sequel, I am actually looking forward to watch it. With the little hope of a better story & directing.
I believe that if they just cut out some of what happened to the side characters on Earth, the story would improve.
+ 1 star for at least something I can enjoy silly without having to deal with anything too meta. A breather from the many Sci-Fi medias I've been watching as of late.
Black Mirror: San Junipero (2016)
A steer away from the usual theme
The story has a lighter tone to it, probably because it discusses portrays bisexuality & homosexuality.
It felt dragged out. Even though the drama was good, though it ended up overshadowing the main discussion of the story.
While the story's depth is almost the same as the other episodes & plot holes is expected for such a short story, the character's decisions doesn't make sense even though justified in the story.
Again, it is perhaps to please a certain type of audience like the production usually do.
Anyways, if you like a good drama & discussions on homosexuality with a happy ending then you'll enjoy this episode.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Definitely an above average action scifi movie
First things first, the plot holes are not that bad.
The plot holes comes later in the movie. Before reaching those parts, the movie's introduction and setup should have given you what to expect throughout the rest of the movie:
It is not trying to be a serious and thought-provoking movie. So don't.
Might as well question why the characters didn't die when there's an explosion and the characters are sent flying from the shockwave.
With that out of the way...
The story is supposed to be simple and entertaining, a bit wacky and funny at some parts, thrilling and over the top during action scenes. It does all that very well.
The visuals are just stunning. The alien design and how they define the future technology is decent. At least it doesn't try to be too futuristic and end up looking weird.
The soundtrack is actually not bad. Nothing memorable but it is used nicely in some actions scenes.
The suspense is legit. The actions scenes gave me goosebumps even though it is cheesy. Especially the earlier part in the future.
There's drama that is fairly well integrated into the plot. The acting really does help when the scene is right. It does have one minor awkward moment before the main character leaves his home to go to the future.
The pacing is just nice. It doesn't have that heavy of a plot so it moves pretty quickly.
Overall, definitely an entertaining scifi movie to watch. A good one in its genre for a few years if you've been searching for one.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Not a solid movie, but it is great
First of all, a moment of silence for those who thought that this movie is a propaganda, and also for those who insisted that it must be a full on war movie because the title has the word "war".
Now, despite having the urge to ramp up the vote by giving it a 10 because some unhappy people giving it a 1 without any constructive or logical review, I'll stick on to giving it an honest 8 stars.
Think of some great war movies that doesn't show much of the war but the devastation war causes. Funnily, the people whining about the title made me remember Silence of the Lambs. Why doesn't that movie have any lambs that are silent?
The pace of this movie is nice, the change of environments indeed makes it a journey. It is kinda generic around the encampment, but there was still a lot going on.
The drama is also good, one of the main reasons people like it. Though some of the character decisions does feel like it only serves to progress the plot, it is not to the point that it felt ridiculous. The idea and dilemma it brings is indeed thought provoking, though it doesn't delve too deeply on it.
Aside from those little goofs, there aren't much to criticise it about.
This movie is about a post-apocalyptic war, not a modern warfare. It is also about the devastation of war. It may also be philosophical for those who searches that in a movie. Caesar's motivations shows family values(definitely not a communist propaganda).
My first ever review in IMDB. Just because there's too many unprofessional reviews that are just distasteful, ruining the score of the movie, and definitely not helping other people that has yet to watch the movie.
