The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Does not disapoint!
There are soo many horror and series out there... but haunting of hill house is on another level from the offset.
The story is about a family with 5 young likable kids who grow up, as the story goes back in time to show the nightmares and hauntings that have plagued the family ever since childhood, at hill house.
I have to say the cast are fantastic and each offer there own take / story of how they have been effected into adulthood.
My fav has to be Nell.. tortured and haunted from a young age by "the bent neck lady".
I wont give too much away but i will say... watch this, you will love it. Also look closer to see ghosts lurking in the back of almost every scene!! very clever, original, and scary
Cloverfield (2008)
Really enjoyable
There's a lot of found footage and similar films out there but cloverfield has to be one of the better ones. The story is told through the camcorder of a young couple who attend a house party in New York and end up filming all of the action and horror as it unfolds. I liked the pace of the film, it got going very quickly and keeps you entertained. The last thing i was expecting to see was a big alien/ monster in the film. Most of the main characters do die and or get eaten etc. This movie reminded me of I am legend mixed with war of the worlds! Overall I liked it. The effects are good and realistic without being too over the top.
Sitter Cam (2014)
Slow and predictable
This film sounded like it was going to be like.. basic instinct or fatal attraction but it was nowhere near as good. The film starts with busy mum and dad needing to replace the dementia suffering nanny.. and of course a hot seemingly perfect teenage heather comes along at the right time. The dad and child love heather and that's her plan. Meanwhile the mum is becoming increasingly suspicious of little miss perfect - and with good cause. When left alone heather is poisoning the little girl against her mum, then drugs and sleeps with the dad ensuring it's all on the nanny cam. I didn't enjoy this movie because the story was slow and predictable with no excitement at all. From start to finish you can guess what will happen next . acting was OK. Not great. It doesn't compare to similar movies and I. Would not recommend
This Is England '90 (2015)
Didn't think it could get any better... But it has!
I have been a fan from the start. This is England shows the ups and downs of each character while they grown up over the course of each instalment. I love every individual. I feel like we have all been in a journey with them, through the good times and the bad. This is England 90 - has to be my favourite so far. The gang are all growing up with lol and woody raising there family and malky being a part of the family... It works. They all seem happy. The other group of friends and going through a happy Monday's drug taking party stage and are full of silliness but still there's a dark undercurrent as you see kelly hiding her sadness and getting deeper into drugs and drink. To say this series is real, raw, gripping and emotional is an understatement. No words can do the writing or the acting any justice. Shane meadows writing and cast are pure genius. This is by far the best show on TV. If you have not seen the others. Watch them all. You will be hooked and can watch there lives pan out in a real, and truly gripping way. I love it.
Alarmed (2014)
Alarmed aka ghost boat
This film is very strange from the offset. The story is about Samantha, once accused of killing her own family. Five years later and while on the family yacht she gets trapped in some sick boat hell time loop. Every night the boat alarm system comes to life and commands her to attack, cut and stab at her own face and limbs (which she does). I couldn't really follow the story or work out who or why this was happening but it becomes clear at the end. The devil has kept her trapped on the hell boat, but as the mystery unravels you and the devil learn that it was Samantha's sister who killed the whole family. So the whole thing ends up being one big bad nightmare for Samantha and she awakes normal, before all of this happened.. A pardon from the devil! The movie ends with the devil going after the real killer (the sister) and starts to torture starts all over again - but for her there won't be a pardon, I found this movie to be a bit silly and disappointing. There well bits that reminded me of devil, or triangle but they were far superior to this. The effects were pretty bad. Ghosts wearing nighties etc. was an okay story but overall a let down and I would not recommend. I was glad when it finished.
Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)
Loved, it. On a par with the first insidious
I have to say that I found insidious 2, bit far fetched and the bad make up ruined it for me. That being said the first one is soo good - I was always gonna watch no3 and it was really good.
Quinn is young and lost her mum, and she came to Elsie (set before the other movies) Turns out when Quinn calls for her dead mum all the dead can hear her.. And one cancer stricken gas mask wearing ghost starts to ocupie her room At night, and he wants her soul. The story and acting is great, unlike the 2nd film.. This one builds up to the scares and there are worth it. The first one still has the edge but I would recommend this to horror fans for sure.
Pusher (2012)
Disappointing, and hard to follow
The film is about frank a small time dealer who gets busted. Loses the stash, owes a drug lord money and tried lots of desperate acts to try and rake in the money.. Not much else goes on. The film has a club / revolver jumpy, waisted point of view and I found it hard to follow. At one point frank has 20k then he only has 6k.. He owes 55k but runs round collecting 100 here and there.. The movie felt slow and not much happens. I was disported by the end, his bird runs of with the money... Meaning he will be yet again emptied handed for the drug lord. Your left feeling he will most likely die.. But I didn't care. It was slow and I would not recommend it. It's like a really rubbish layer cake.
San Andreas Quake (2015)
Thought this was a disaster movie... I was wrong
I seen the trailer for San andreas, but clicked on "QUAKE" by accident. After the first 30 slow minutes I started to wander when the story was going to pick up. IT was like the most dull version ever of twister. A woman predicting earth quakes, and trying to get across town with a male companion who had predictable obstacles thrown in their way. It just dragged. Even when there was a quake.. The ground was shaking and some cars piled up but there was no disaster. There was no falling buildings or big waves. All the way through this movie I was waiting for something more which never ever came. I wish I had clicked the real / blockbuster version of San andreas because this QUAKE version was slow, boring, lacking any real story and or effects. I've seen a good few rubbish movies over the years but I think this could be near or at the top of the list.
The Babadook (2014)
A perfect creepy horror
As a big horror fan, I was looking forward to the babadook and it was a brilliant watch. It's basically a good old fashioned boogeyman story about a widow mum, who's left bringing up her needy little boy who has some behaviour issues. A book (mr babadook) appears and the mum reads it but soon realises the content is not for children as it tells the story of mr babadook who comes into your room at night and terrorizes you.. And that's what he does. Once she reads the book, mr babadook starts to appear. Pretty freaked out she burns the book but it comes back re written with an evil end about a mum killing her boy. There are many similar boogeyman / ghost movies but this one was different. It feels real with lots of tension. I won't give too much away but the ending is great, as mr babadook is real. The mum and child set a trap and kind of end up keeping him forever!
The mum is fantastic at playing a drained widow and equally the little boy plays quite the brat, but you cannot help but feel sorry for them both. I would recommend this film and I watched it again a few weeks later.
Clown (2014)
Scary and enjoyable
I watched clown last night and it's haunted my thoughts all day! I just came across the film by accident and when I seen it was an Eli Roth movie I decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed. I actually think that I held my breath for over an hour, and when it finished - I wasn't able to fall asleep. The story is about a dad who puts on an old creepy clown outfit for his sons birthday party. He realizes after that it won't come of, and tries desperately to cut into it (slashing his own wrist). His wife tries to help and ends up ripping his red nose right of his face. I think this is when I started to feel uncomfortable. He starts to transform.. Into an evil clown. The effects are great and I really like how the story started straight away - he literally puts the outfit on during the first two minutes of the film and things just keep getting darker. As the clown outfit becomes more restricting and you find out it's actually turning him into a demon... Who likes to eat children. At certain points in the movie his wife tries to help and save him. There's also a great bit when he decides to cut his own head off, but things don't go to plan. The character really does become creepy and sinister. You don't normally see little people getting so gruesomely murdered in a movie. It was very well done and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend this great horror slasher movie.
Evil Dead (2013)
Close to the original story but way scarier
The movie centres around Mia who is a drug addict, who's been taken to a cabin in the woods to get clean by her close friends and brother. Very quickly after they arrive a book is found (covered in dead skin and says do not open) that calls on a demon and Mia has a horrid experience in the woods.. And let's just say she is engulfed by the Forrest! She is very different and her whole personality changes and of course everyone puts it down to the drug withdrawal and ignore the signs that something is seriously wrong. The graphics and special effects are great especially if you have seen the original! When the demon takes over there is a total change is appearance and the make up is very real. The story is fast paced and eventually the demon gets a hold of all the characters leading to a scary bloody climax. Obviously there's a lot more in between. I like the realism of all the people. The movie wasn't over the top, it's quite simple but keeps you gripped. There's a great scene in the kitchen when one of the friends goes all evil and zombie, and cuts her own arm of with a turkey slicer! One armed zombie chick who won't die! It was frightening and you feel panicked for the characters who are trying there best to survive. I really loved the end, and I won't say anything to spoil it but it's good and Mia plays a great part. I would recommend this film as it's a good scare and enjoyable.
Along Came Polly (2004)
A laugh out loud film
This film is very funny. It's a romantic comedy film a bit like 50 first dates. Ben stiller plays the main character "Ruben". When he goes on honeymoon his new wife goes of with the scuba diver. Ruben is left sad and desolate until poll (Anniston) comes along. The film is about them getting through some awkward dates and Ruben trying to impress her with his salsa dancing. I laughed out loud a good few times. Jennifer Anniston is so easy to watch and ben stiller, his facial expressions and some of the scenarios in the film were brilliant. The story isn't to taxing. I don't think a rom com can be exciting - so maybe that's why I didn't give it a higher score. I would recommend it if you just want something that's easy and funny to watch. It's not that memorable but it is enjoyable!
Devil (2010)
Scary and different
Given that this whole film is set in an elevator, it does an amazing job of building the story, tension and fear. At first it seems they are just normal people stuck in a lift, but they have unknowingly been brought to that situation by the devil and each one of the characters have a shady past which eventually comes to light and all of there lives are inter mingled in some way. One by one.. The trapped lift survivors come to a grizzly end. So who your left guessing who is the killer... And how or why the remaining few May die Well it's the last least person you would ever expect and this only adds to the tension. There are lots of great scares and the acting is very believable. Although there's only a few people in a small space, it doesn't matter. As a viewer I liked the constant guessing and how the story unfolds. The end is great.. Expect the unexpected. Highly recommend this movie
Intruders (2011)
Scary and enjoyable
This film is a good scary thriller. Clive Owen is the main character and gives a convincing performance of a dad who is trying to catch "hollow face" the man who appears in his daughters bedroom at night. The film also flips back to a similar story in Spain, where hollow face comes to a little boys room at night. There aren't lots of effects or gore in this film. It's just a simple story of a creepy man who visits children at night. The two halves of the story come together nicely, as hollow face presence seems to intensify - with the police and social work involved the pressure is on the dad to prove hollow face does exist.. I would recommend this movie and it was a good scary watch.
Flight 7500 (2014)
Missing some horror
I read some reviews which weren't very good but I decided to give this film a watch because the trailer looked okay and the story sounded intriguing. I was let down. Nothing much really happens in this film. The story is about an airline flight the goes through some weird occurrences which the passengers think is the result of a man who dies on the flight - and then think he is maybe haunting the plane. It is a ghost story of sorts, but there's a general lack of scares and frights. The movie feels slow and whilst I did really like the ending (basically everyone on the plane is dead and in some sort of airplane limbo) and the final ten minutes wasn't what I expected but even then the rest of the film was a let down.
30 Days of Night (2007)
Proper scary vampire flick
I love this film. There are so many vampire movies out there but this one is in a league of its own. The film is about a small Alaskan town that goes dark for a month every year. This winter the most evil believable vampires attack the town and take out most of the population. The main characters are the sheriff Josh Hartmett and his kind of side kick leading woman Melissa George. Ultimately the vampires are there to kill everyone and suck the town dry. Most people get killed of pretty rapid and things are left to the sheriff and his closest friends to try and survive/ escape the vampires. In order to save the day the sheriff decided to make the ultimate sacrifice (himself). I won't ruin the end but its really good and different from all the other films in the respect that the heroin gets a pass to the final. These vampires are not pretend humans. They look and act ancient. They speak a forgotten language and do this awful howl when they are in a pack, and they are very fast. There are lots of great scenes in this film that had me almost holding my breath. Omg the fear is amazing the film is quite dark, and feels scary when your watching it and that's what a horror should do.
Annie Claus Is Coming to Town (2011)
Surprisingly enjoyable easy to watch Christmas film
I would never put on a film like this for lots of reasons, It looks like a kids movie and a bit cheesy (which it is). The movie just came on TV and whilst my instinct was to change the channel.. I got sucked in by Annie Clause and her quest to spread xmas cheer and find true love. Annie is the daughter of santa who has never been away from the North Pole until now, and she ends up working in a toy store and winning the affections of two men. Of course one of the men is a slimy bad guy and Annie is to Naive to see what a liar he is, the whole time her real true love is mr perfect in the background. The film has all the ingredient needed. The main character Annie is enjoyable to watch, the story is good and quick paced. There's a horrid bad guy, and it's ultimately a Christmas love story. It sounds weird but the colours and set are lovely and nice on the eye. This film made me feel like "home alone". Fun, enjoyable, easy to watch and all round light hearted. I would recommend this film if you want something nice n easy to watch on a Sunday afternoon.
Before I Go to Sleep (2014)
Good story, creepy.. But slow
I didn't have much expectations but the trailer looked good. The film is about Nicole Kidman who wakes up everyday with no memory of the day before. From the offset you get the feeling there something creepy about the husband... There are lots of movements that I felt were spoiled by a build up a violin music. Kid mans character starts to remember stuff but all is not what it seems and she clearly gets lie to on a daily basis. She's very clever and adapts quickly. The story / film picks up a pace and I really enjoyed the part when every1 Realises her "husband is in fact an intruder" who's been keeping her at home and telling her nonsense which she forgets at bedtime anyway! You end up rooting for Nicole. The acting is great. Colin firth is very evil. I did enjoy this film but first 30min are boring. Worth a watch!
Annabelle (2014)
Great horror, good scares but could have been better!
I was a big fan of the conjuring, so when I seen the trailer for Annabelle I was already hooked. It felt like a long wait but It was worth it. The film starts the same as the conjuring with some scared nurses saying the Annabelle doll had been terrorising them and the story goes back and tells the story of how the doll came to be possessed.
Basically a young married couple get there home ransacked by two crazy murdering cult members - who attack and nearly kill them. The police save the day but the crazy cult woman dies holding Annabelle and a drop of her "evil" blood drips into the dolls eye. Strange and unlucky things start to happen, and the build up is really slow. There's not many special effects and the film feels retro, my only criticism is there's almost to much background to the story, there's quite a big character build up setting the husband and wife scene. Waiting for the baby... But When the frights come they really do deliver. The mum Mia really is a great actress, she is believable but not over the top. Wish the same could be said for her on screen husband who seems wooden and just limp. At first I found him off putting but luckily he's not in it a lot.
When the young couple move to a new home things really pick up pace. Mia wants to protect her young baby so she reads more into what could be causing the presence and gets help from a priest and makes friends with Evelyn from the book store. There was a really tense scene where Mia goes to the basement and the door gets stuck, four or five times, it just keeps opening in the basement where there's a devil/ goat demon awaiting in the dark shadows. This bit had me on the edge of my seat! The horned demon is very scary a bit like the one in insidious. The last twenty minutes of the film is brilliant, the story comes together in a great climax with the demon wanting satisfied with a sole and it looks like Mia will kill herself to save the baby.. However the priest and book lady won't let that happen.
Everything appears to end well but of course nobody knows where Annabelle is.. But the viewer knows she moves on and ends up terrorising the nurses. I love horror films and this was not a disappointment. Had a feel of drag me to hell mixed with insidious. i would recommend this film and I really enjoyed watching it!
Oculus (2013)
Not as good as I wanted it to be...
It was almost a six.. When I seen the trailer for oculus I couldn't wait to see it, as it looked scary with a good story. The story is that the family mirror makes people do things they can't remember and turns them a bit evil. The son shot the dad and the dad murdered the mum. Years later the son and daughter (bro and sis) go back to the family home and do an elaborate experiment to try and trap the mirror and film all the events to prove how evil it is. It's got a feel to it like insidious, and I liked how the story started straight away. No big build up or character building! The movie flips between when they were young and the present day. You get a better insight into how the mum and dad changed with the presence of the mirror and there are quite a few jumpy bits.. The mirror keeps tricking them and playing with the siblings heads until eventually things don't go to plan and the trap that was set to kill the mirror kills the main character which leaves her young brother taking the rap for yet another crime he didn't commit, it was the mirror all along!! The story is a good story. It there just wasn't enough terror or scary bits for me. After the film finished I just felt like something was missing. Could have been more exciting? It wasn't bad and I don't want to sound vague but it's almost like all the best bits were in the trailer. It's enjoyable to watch and I would recommend it.
Afflicted (2013)
Not what I was expecting.. And not great!
I think five is fair and generous. The movie starts of upbeat about two young guys who go traveling. The film has a clover field camcorder feel to the way it's shot. One of the boys starts to develop a disease and weird behaviors after a night with Audrey and at first you think he is a dying but starts to get strong and is jumping about like Spider-Man ? But then he goes all pale and quiet and eats his best mate... So then I think he must be a vampire. There is a few good frights and the effects are good but it felt like the story dragged a bit in the middle. He eventually tracks down Audrey only to find out there's no cure and that's how he must live... So in a weird dexter martyr scene at the end he eats a pedophile.. So he's really a good vampire !!
The Call (2013)
New age "kiss the girls"
This film tells the story of a female (Halle berry) call centre 999 operator. She seems to be getting quite a few knocks and takes a call from a girl who is hiding after a man breaks into her home, accidentally she hangs up... And when silly Halle rings the house back, the evil killer knows someone is In the house. He finds and kills the girl who called 999 and Halle for help. Months go by and Halle has lost all her confidence knowing her mistake cost the girl her life. Then the killer steals another young girls... Who takes the call.? Halle - and is on a mission this Timeto save the girl and catch a killer. She does save the day... And the killer... He gets what he deserves. Greta cast. Good exciting and scary story. Liked the end and would recommend as a good old fashioned thriller.
The Resident (2011)
Good creepy thriller
If you want a good creepy film.. The resident is perfect for the job. The story gets going quick when Hilary Swank moves into the perfect New York apartment at a great price.. What's the catch? Her landlord creeps into her room at night, watches her in the bath and eventually drugs and abuses her. There is an old uncle hanging about and at first you think he is going to be evil.. But that's a red herring. The film made me squirm on loads of occasions and when Hilary fits CCTV in her home then watches the footage you feel horror for her. The movie is quick paced and believable. I liked the ending because she finds out what the landlord is up to then after a short chase around the apartment she kills him. Really enjoyed it.
White Chicks (2004)
Very funny, slapstick comedy
I first seen this film about ten years ago. I thought it was funny, but maybe a little immature. It was on t.v. The other night and I wasn't going to watch it but after fifteen minutes I was hooked! I'm not sure why some reviews moan that the story or make up isn't believable. Who cares? You have to go with the silliness to enjoy the film and all the gags. Two black police men are under cover and pretend to be young white spoiled white girls, is not easy to pull of but it does work and they are very very funny. The character of Latrell who takes a shine to one of the girls is the star of the movie. He is cheesy and has the worst pick up lines. He is a machine. I didn't think I would enjoy this comedy as much as I did. Go with it...
Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011)
Entertaining but not that scary!
Apparently this film is a prequel and tells the tale of how the hillbillies came to be cannibals who live in the forest... that part does not deliver. The film starts in 1974 at a mental asylum. The hillbillies kill the doctors then the film zooms to 2003 and the cannibals haven't even aged. What did they do for 30 years and where did all the mental patients go? Of course a big group of good looking young people stumble across the empty asylum (in 30 years nobody else came. No police. No robbers) and after opening the unlocked door they are more than happy to wander around.. and get gruesomely murdered and eaten one by one. The human buffet bit is amazing- One of the boys has been captured and the hillbillies are carving him up whilst his pals debate slowly about what the plan should be . It reminds me of the bit in the first movie when the girl is hiding under the bed. That being said the hillbillies seems quite clever and evil in the first film yet in this movie they run away when challenged and seem really dumb almost pathetic.. If you don't get too hung up on the technical stuff then this films not that bad. It's not as bad as some reviews say. The story starts quick and there's blood and gore in the first few minutes. The group actually get the upper hand but then get killed... which they deserve for being so stupid. All in all I enjoyed wrong turn 4. I don't care if it's a prequel or not. There was creepy hillbillies and a big mental asylum. Perfect.
