fame comes to a prolific, urban American artist
11 March 2006
Purvis Young is a self-taught primitive artist living in the urban ghetto of Miami. When Interstate 95 cuts through his neighborhood, his outdoor exhibit is then visible to commuters on the highway. When he is "discovered" by the Miami contemporary art world, Purvis has to maintain his perspective. This documentary uses archival & recent footage and interviews to underscore the power of art to communicate the struggles in our society. The views of his neighbors & friends reveal his kind & gentle personality, unspoiled by the money & fame. Now that he has money, he can hire models, help out his extended family, and even get medical care for himself.
