Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal (2001)
so bad it's good
I thought this was hysterical, actually. It's got all the clichés of airplane disaster movies mixed in with a cliché that kind of went down the tubes after the eighties- the 'evil rock & roll guy' cliché. I only saw this on HBO, but if I had a copy, I'd probably serve it up on a movie night alongside "Trick or Treat" and "Black Roses" and "Rock and Roll Nightmare" and "Monster Dog" and "the Dungeonmaster"; it just fills that bill so nicely. I agree with the person on the postboard tho, Slade is no Marilyn Manson. Rather, the way he turns the situation to his own advantage in the end made him pure Rozz Williams to me.Give this turkey a try; altho remember, as we learned from WKRP in Cinncinati, turkeys do NOT fly. :)
Nirvana Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! (1994)
If you like Nirvana, this is the film to see
In the wake of the death of Cobain, a zillion schlock films came out trying to capture the phenomenon that was this band, but this one, originally started by Kurt himself and finished by the surviving members- is the best one to see. Using montages made by Kurt, home movies shot by Krist, and footage from concerts and TV appearances, this film really gives the new and seasoned Nirvana fan a glimpse into the humor and raw energy that was what made this band so special. If you check out none of the other films, You should see this one. Standout scenes for me included Krist's banter shot on an airplane heading to a show somewhere, and the Top of the Pops performance of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" where an obviously disgruntled Cobain, sick of the song's overplayedness, and having to perform to a pre-recorded soundtrack, makes the performance interesting.
The Devil's Rain (1975)
great if you like cheese
I've always recommended this movie to people who like bad horror flicks. Both Shatner and Borgnine are at their overacting best in this as they debate good and evil, while the black robed Satanists just sit around and chant; really, have you ever seen evil be so devout and boring? The highlight is Borgnine as a goat. The melty effects are fun and cheesy too. It's clear the director had just gotten/seen this effect and decided to go to town with it. As someone said earlier, Travolta debuting is just plain weird, and the fact that Anton LaVey hisself has a cameo just makes this a cheesy scream queen classic. Buy/rent or borrow this and have a laugh!
Razor Blade Smile (1998)
a fun vampyre romp.
zooks! How could anyone NOT like this? This is one of my favorite vampyre movies ever and, in my opinion, probably influenced the makers of the video game Bloodrayne... as was said in the earlier review, the lesbian scene is great, and just the whole lighting and tone of this film is surreal and very beautiful. The ending is a real shocker (which I shan't give away) and I just really recommend giving this movie a try. Sure, there IS a cheese factor (let's face it- is there such thing as a vampyre movie that doesn't have a bit of one?) and you can definitely see how fake the fangs are, but I thought this film was great! Try it & see!
Street Trash (1987)
mm, melty goodness!
I first saw this film on trashy movie night at a NYC club (now gone) called the Dive, and I never forgot it. The surreal melting effects are what was standout to this film for me, but the real horror in this film is the 'Nam vet who 'rules' the street people in this town; the secret life the homeless winos have, with a pecking order and a surreal home base in a tire junkyard has an almost Mad Max feel to it. Who can save you from tyrannical king winos, or the Mafia when you're invisible? In spite of this our hero seems to have a good life, and when he discovers the creepy power of the toxic wine, a formidable weapon. This is certainly worth at least one viewing, and is definitely somewhere in my top 100 of cheesy scream queen flicks.
