The Flatshare (2022)
5/10
Wanted to like it.
1 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The two main characters are cast perfectly and also Richie's brother however the deviation away from the plot of the book ruined it for me. The book has a flow with the side characters, Tiff's friends & the patients at the hospital which made you more invested in them and gave them more of a purpose. The timeline in the books is so much better and i don't think the edits made enhanced it at all but rather was its downfall. Agree with the comments made about a shorter episode run as ep 1 and 2 was strong but from there, it all fell a bit flat and i couldn't make it to episode 5 which is unfortunate. Big promise but under delivered for me.

Fun and light show! Easy watch
19 June 2022
I have really enjoyed every minute of this new series. It is a light and easy watch with many laugh out loud moments. The cast is fantastic and all do a great job of selling their characters. The series gives a Schitts Creek vibe with the community of the lake at talent shows and meetings. Genuinely a happy watch which is just what I needed. Hoping for a season 2!

Barracuda (2016)
10/10
Brilliant! Australian television at its best.
11 July 2016
10 out of 10 may seem like quite a high rating but i thoroughly enjoyed the 4 part miniseries and while not perfect, nothing is, i'm rating it 10 because i was so engrossed the whole time. ABC featured all four episodes to stream on Iview and after watching the first episode on live TV, i could not wait a whole week for a second serve.

I did start reading the book and gave up a few chapters in. While it was interesting and did at one point hook me in, i found the author who is brilliant, Christos Tsiolkas, is a strong story teller through the amount of detail he uses to set up plots, characters and scenes. I found the book at times be quite indulgent and while important in setting the scene, i wanted the book to progress at a faster pace. The miniseries however i found very rewarding as for time reasons, it was condensed and the narrative moved quickly which i liked. While i did not connect with the book, i appreciate it and could see how it is such a compelling read. Seeing it on the screen, i really respect the book for painting such a complex story of Danny, who is such a complex character.

Elias Anton as Danny and Ben Kindon as Martin Taylor did such a superb job of bringing their characters to life. It was compelling to watch, they had major chemistry on screen which added to the direction of the storyline. Rachel Griffiths was outstanding as well, she nailed the cold and privileged mother. Matt Nable as Frank Torma though was a force, he gave a truly outstanding performance. A bare minimum Logie nomination for most outstanding actor, if not the win because he was just mesmerising. Playing a coach, you felt obliged to listen to him, like you were his student. This TV series really does deserve several nods in all categories at the Logies next year and AFI awards.

I have to admit, i've been slack to acknowledge the ABC as suppliers of brilliant Australian drama, the only shows i watch on the ABC are Please Like Me and Dance Academy (back in the day) but i am certainly paying attention now. They are such wonderful contributors to Australian television and i'm going to make sure i am aware of all future TV projects because i would have felt very saddened had i not been aware of this television series. Support local production! Barracuda is a shining example of the talent in our industry. Wonderful story writing, talented actors, beautiful cinematography. Really spot on. Well done to all involved! A true feat.

Wonderful!
3 January 2016
I was finally able to watch this movie today after much hype and critical acclaim. When a movie is so hyped i find myself extra difficult to please as my expectations are so high. This film was different to what i thought it would be. But it hit me so much harder than i thought it would. A movie set in the 70-80's i wonder how it related to now all these years later. It was in fact more heart wrenching seeing how far the LGBT community has come in terms of equality and acceptance. While we still seem a government away from legalising gay marriage in Australia, this movie showed just how far we have come and we have come far.

The performances by all the actors were spot on. Ryan Corr was so believable at every moment. He played the gay character without stereotype and over performance. He was delicate and sensitive is portraying a very honest performance which is so far away from himself in reality which made me admire even more his beautiful portrayal of Tom. Craig Stott was brilliant as well, both actors carried the movie. All performances were important and added to the film.

There were certainly a few very poignant scenes that had me very choked up. It truly is a beautiful love story. I saw the Dressmaker late last year and this movie is without a doubt more honest and genuine while it had a limited release. Holding the Man is an important film is Australian cinema and achieved its message on all fronts. Was very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed this film.

The Gift (VI) (2015)

Good film!
1 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this movie with very high expectations because it had a good rating on IMDb and i read about big twists and turns and i love a good thriller. Going into a movie with high expectations on most occasions is a bad thing. While during the first fifteen minutes of the film i wasn't so sure, it definitely had me hook, line and sinker by the middle right up until the shocking end. Now don't expect a huge plot twist but it was definitely creepy and ended the film with a really horrible vibe which worked because of the style of film it is. I found the characters to be very interesting and it was interesting who you sided with as the story played out. Joel Edgerton directed and wrote The Gift and certainly achieved in providing thrills, shocks and plot twists. Really enjoyable ride... or not so enjoyable in certain parts but it made for a great thriller. A few hundred steps up from The Boy Next Door that came out earlier this year, an obsession/stalker film that miserably failed. The Gift however doesn't fail, it succeeds. Good viewing.

Great film
15 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Brokeback Mountain a year after it came out at 14 years of age and i didn't enjoy the film. I thought it was slow, boring and i thought that the film lacked in passionate scenes with the two leads, there were no ' i love you's'. The film wasn't blatant in its message, they didn't say things just to set up the story, we weren't given the answers in a neat and tidy bow. Watching it now at 23, i can see now what i could not see then, being so young, a film that is absolutely beautiful. Not boring at all, intriguing, heartbreaking and full of wonderful performances by Heath, Jake, Michelle and Anne. All the scenes between Heath and Jake, they feel so real because they are not given abundant amounts of dialog that treat the audience like they need guidance. We are given brief moments, that to be honest i wanted more from, that not much is said but it is defiantly clear that these two mens hearts are breaking for each other. It is love without having to say it, without having to fall into cinematic clichés of how to represent love on screen. Heath and Jake had a wonderful chemistry, it was so believable. One of the most heartbreaking scenes is when Alma (Williams) sees Ennis (Ledger) kissing Jack (Gyllenhaal). This scene to me paints a perfect picture of the time and especially in the south. So many men that were gay were doing what they had to do to fit in and it is not at all fair on their wives and children but you have to blame society. I love the raw nature of this film, no moments felt forced, no scenes were wasted, it is a brilliant film. To see Heath Ledger look so damn beautiful and portray a wonderful performance, it really makes me sad that he is gone. He definitely left a wonderful legacy of films behind him and Brokeback Mountain is one of his best.

Atonement (2007)
10/10
A stunning film.
11 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Atonement for probably the fourth time tonight and i had goosebumps pretty much all the way through the film. It is a beautifully shot film and the actors portray their characters in such a real and organic way. The scene where they are filming on the shore line in France with all the soldiers scattered across the beach, this scene is was a particular moment when i was just astounded by how well shot the film was. There are no scenes or moments that are wasted, i felt that every little detail of every scene and every word said was crucial in telling the story. At the end of the film we find out what became of Cecilia and Robbie and it is just heartbreaking but the impact of the film relies on the two characters fate and it really hits home just how one mistake, one lie can change everything. This film for me is just perfect, i love absolutely everything about it, especially the cinematography. The score also is really important in building tension and the use of the type writer sound effect was just genius. I highly recommend this film, it won't be everyones cup of tea like all films are subjective but for me personally i highly regard this film and it would have to be on my list of my favourite films of all time. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy are wonderfully talented and this film is a great showcase of that.

Son of a Gun (2014)

Great Australian Film
28 December 2014
I watched this movie because i'm a big fan of Brenton Thwaites and think he is super attractive. However after the first five minutes i found myself very interested in the film and from there on i was taken on a very exciting ride with twists and turns and it turned out to be a great film.

Even if Brenton Thwaites wasn't insanely good looking this movie really stood on its own. Australia can produce great films as well as show casing brilliant actors. Son Of A Gun was a great example of just how established our film industry is becoming and that we can create quality films. Ewan Mcgregor was such a surprise. My only memory of one of his performances is in Moulin Rouge where he plays quite a weak and softly spoken character. So the contrast from that character to the character in this film are opposite worlds and he nailed it. I was very impressed with his performance.

Alicia Vikander player her role very well and am very glad she took part in this movie. I really cared about Tasha (Vikander) and JR (Thwaites) which is always a good connection to make with an audience. I wanted the best for these characters. This movie had many dimensions. It has a bit of romance, drama, violence, twists and turns. It can connect with a wide audience as their is a little something for everyone. I really enjoyed watching Son Of a Gun and do highly recommend watching it.

Really enjoyed it!
2 December 2014
From the minute the film started i was hooked right in. This film deals with some really heavy subject matter and while we may not all relate to each individual characters story, we can all relate to how consuming technology has become and the internet. It was confronting at times but it was for good reason, it wasn't about shock factor, it was a genuine portrayal of a story. I felt for every character even when it was hard too. Ansel Elgort has a knack for ripping my heart out (Fault In Our Stars and this film). I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging and interesting this film was. While is seems to have been critiqued harshly by critics, i don't hold a film to any particular rating, i watch it for what it is and for me, not for others. I found the movie interesting, i enjoyed each character and learning their stories. Highly suggest this film but go in without a movie critic state of mind and take it for what it is.

What did i just watch?
25 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this movie showed promise and had quite a high rating so i gave it a shot. I actually want my time back! Not to mention my innocence. I understand that not every story can be a happy one, but why would anyone want to tell this story? A novel adapted into a film and to be honest, it was a mess! The story seemed disjointed and random, the camping and ghost stories part was just random overload. The movie deals with extremely dark subject matter so to call this film a 'love story' is a major stretch. I felt so uneasy watching this film in the middle and final parts. The characters were so little developed and this was not helped by the weak acting and terrible dialog. This is the perfect example of a novel that should be left to the literary world and not to cinema. I've seen many depressing films in my life and somehow they lift you up or at least explain the intentions and justice is served or there is a silver lining. This film leaves you feeling empty and disturbed which i almost respect because in reality bad things happen to people and there is little happiness in certain situations. But to watch this film intentionally aware of what is going to happen.... you just wouldn't do it. It's a one time watch and never again.

It's a grower
16 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'm very late to get on the Slide train. I don't have Foxtel so i was not able to watch it when it was on but i read something about it and it seemed alright. I bought the series on DVD last week and i was really surprised. It is an Australian 'Skins' but it worked. I was not sure after the first two episodes but by episode 3 i was completely hooked and loving every bit of it.

A huge draw card for me was the absolute gorgeousness that is Brenton Thwaites as Luke. He is extremely attractive and was automatically my favourite character. But as the show progressed i found myself really enjoying every character. Scarlett (Emily Iris Robins) was so unlikeable in the first episode but as the show went on she really grew on me and was very funny. A bitchy rich character is a standard necessity for any teen show. Eva (Adele Perovic) the punk chick was another character that grew to become a staple. I'd even go to say she was a little under used because she was very likable. Tammy (Gracie Gilbert) is so pretty, while her character could sometimes be too uptight i really wanted her to end up with Luke. The nerd gets the cool guy, classic story. Ed (Ben Schumann) was the rock of the group and seemed to almost be the main character. A very well acted character but he became extremely annoying toward the end and i was really just living for the love story between Tammy and Luke.

I thought the show very well written and acted. I had to binge watch the series because i couldn't stop watching. Upon finishing the series i have major post Slide depression. I'm actually devastated that the show was not renewed for a second season but out of every bad thing comes a good thing and it seems like all the main characters are still getting steady work which is great. Wish they had a 20 episode series and filmed it all in the one go and even ended it just so we could get a bit more closure. Anyway! Watch it! Although i warn you, you will be depressed when it finishes.

Did justice to the wonderful book by John Green.
5 June 2014
No movie genre makes me cry more than a movie about cancer. A Walk To Remember, My Sisters Keeper, Now is Good are a few films that destroyed me emotionally but i adore them. The book by John Green is great read and this film serves the book justice if not more so. I felt a lot more closure at the end of this film than i did reading the book. Now Is Good is so similar to this film but both stand on their own as individual films about the destruction of cancer. I think Fault In Our Stars is actually better than Now Is Good but i'd say that has a lot to do with John Green. Amazing amazing film! Broke my heart but a good movie should be able to do so. Ansel Elgort is just beautiful and so believable as the character of Gus. Shailene Woodely does a great job as Hazel too, the casting was spot on. Highly recommend this film!

Wolf Creek 2 (2013)
7/10
Enjoyable
23 February 2014
I saw the first film during schoolies and it felt like it went for twenty minutes. I don't recall any of it apart from that wicked snicker Mick puts on. Going into the second movie was like going in blind. We all know what Wolf Creek is about but i didn't know what to expect, remembering the premise of the first one, no way could they be the same and they weren't. I was pleasantly surprised as i was hooked from the very start. John Jarret is truly superb in this role, he is menacing and pulls of crazy perfectly. Ryan Corr was another good choice, good actor and also very good looking, which always helps. It was definitely a film of cat and mouse, the cat being Mick Taylor.

The final thirty minutes was definitely a step away from the first film completely. It provides the viewer a more in depth look into the menace and serial killer antics of Mick and a chronicle of his 'hobby'. The ending was also brilliant, simple yet punches you right in the face. Their were parts during the film that were a bit comedic. I found this not to be a bad addition, to lighten up the heavy themes of the film, however it did throw off the pace and unsettling tone. Also the music choices were questionable. I found myself looking over to my friend a few times during these parts laughing awkwardly out of place and saying 'that was a bit weird' or 'interesting song choice, bit lame'.

My main criticism of the movie would probably be the hyper inflated racist Australian character of Mick Taylor. However in saying that, i guess that is why he is so crazy and so easy to hate. I'm glad i saw it, i was thoroughly entertained.
