Masters of the Air (2024)
What is with the dialogue?
I am only 10 min in and already the poor script cliche of the characters casually retelling an unnecessary story to establish background makes me want to choke em out. Speak like real people, dont look like your acting. I'd be cringing if I had to recite these lines. Wondering if Spielberg and Hanks have aged out or have just decided to dial it in and live off their reputations. It isnt enough to have good scenery or epic battle scenes. You also need to build your characters. Not color by numbers.
I am going to give it a bit more of my attention, but so far doubt I'll see it to the end. Comparing it to BOB is an insult to BOB.
The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure (2022)
Lame slapstic
I expected alot more as I am an overall fan of S. Korean tv & film. Either the translation was poor or the story and plot was silly rather than funny. Not even the all star cast could save it.
Snow Is on the Sea (2015)
A typical Korean film.
What I appreciated alot about this film was it moved away from the rather goofy or Kdrama style genre one associates with Korean film and tv. I enjoy those too, but this was refreshing. It's a about real people and real lives. I really enjoyed the cinematography, it's slow pace and also the chemistry between the characters. The storyline was rather predictable, but the piece sticks with you anyway.
This is probably Park Hae Jin's best performance or the best from what I have seen. It's natural and engaging. It's rather sad he is so often type cast. I believe he probably has a lot more depth than he is allowed to show as an actor. Everyone in this drama did a great performance and I hope to see them again on the screen in the near future.
Testament of Youth (2014)
though it brought me to tears movie length could never measure up.
Having read the book a few months ago I knew before watching the movie it would be impossible to reach to the depths of the biography. Testament of Youth isn't a page turner, but it will bury itself in your soul. Her bare, honest and meticulously detailed account is life changing. This film really skimmed the edges of the story concentrating on young love and loss rather than the soul wrenching events that each of these people went through that no one should ever endure. The politics of the day, the social structure which was so important in Brittain's struggle, were only hinted at. it's because I read the book I found myself moved to tears, as I know what was between the lies and in the history. Testament of Youth should be required reading. if you want to get something real from this movie read the book. Brittain and all those touched by war deserve that.
