Point Blank (2019)
Horrific Remake
If you saw the original French version of "Point Blank" and then tried to sit through this brainless D version you would be in utter shock. Everything is cheap and hollow. Enough said.
À bout portant (2010)
Superb Film
This small French thriller has somehow not been recognized for what it is: A superb romantic thriller with a ticking "clock" that will keep you on the edge of your couch or chair since it's long gone from whatever theatrical release it got in USA. It's as good as 95% of the studio "thrillers" released the past 10-20 years with big names attached. One becomes jaded with the excessive CGI and loud sound tracks and remakes we get fed every year. So when something original, not over the top but steeped in story and simplicity arrives...Well then count our lucky stars. It's a rare treat. Go find this gem (Neflix is streaming it) and see what film making is all about: writing, casting, production values and DIRECTING!
Les patriotes (1994)
A realistic look at a major spy agency
This excellent thriller and character study of a young Israeli spy was produced in 1993-4. It plays as well as any memorable films of the same milieu, e.g. "Three Days of the Condor", "The Company", "Bourne", "Marathon Man", etc. That is pretty lofty company. I refuse to give away the plot but know that for two hours it will take you on a thrilling mystery ride. The casting and directing compliment a terrific script. Shot in Paris, Tel Aviv, Washington, D.C. and New York City it moves along without the gimmicks (CGI) or insane editing and music that so many films depend on today. Finally, the international cast of French, American and Israeli actors are in perfect harmony. Always good to see Alan Garfield in anything..
