Prime Suspect 1973 (2017)
Explains a lot about Jane Tennison
I thought the mysteries were interesting but it was the way it showed how Jane was caught up in the bad side of policing early on that caught my attention most. It showed how a wide eyed new recruit transitioned into the hard boiled mess she later became. The original series was excellent and it's hard for anything to compare. Still, this has been enjoyable.
The Rookie (2018)
Best New Show I've Seen in a Long Long Time
I have never watched Castle, only knew of Nathan Fillion by reputation and from seeing him on Modern Family. He is extremely engaging.
Putting all that aside, this was an outstanding first episode of what appears to have the possibility of being a great show. Enjoyed the fact that it was really about all the rookies, not just the "40-year old rookie." The stories of all the characters were interesting and the revelation about one of the TO's was particularly stunning.
Looking forward to a season of great stories with lots of character development and interesting plots.
The Kids Are Alright (2018)
Got Off to a Good Start
I was going to skip this after watching the first twenty or so minutes. Felt bad for the kids who seemed to get lost in the shuffle of a big family, with their feelings discounted. But the last few minutes where the parents seemed to come around really saved it for me. I'll be watching . . .
Tomorrow Is Forever (1946)
Another Claudette Colbert Win
Claudette Colbert is superb an any role, especially when she plays a mother. All of the actors in this movie are first rate and do an outstanding job. I've always wondered if this film had any bad sentiment as it had the mom not wanting the son to go to the war --- which was an unpopular view at the time. Really enjoyed Orson Welles in a supporting role. Devil's advocate here: can a wife really not recognize her husband despite 20 years and cosmetic surgery?
Big Game (2014)
Big Game is a Great Movie !
I adored this movie. I've watched it six times and it's on my TV right now. I hadn't heard of it before I read about it online.
I'm sure there are inconsistencies as others have stated but I'm not worried about things that I can't easily see. I just liked the movie.
I encourage you to watch it despite any other comments/reviews. It's heartwarming. And Samuel Jackson does a good job portraying a U.S. President as an every day man. Love the kid, too. Hope he does some more movies.
I like this movie so much, I'm recommending this to my friends, something I never do.
Spy (2015)
Entertaining movie with an outstanding supporting cast
I haven't seen many of Melissa McCarthy's recent movies because I found the couple I had seen to be disappointing. They were comedies, she was in them, they seemed to have the same plot (overweight, unattractive woman surprises everyone by her chutzpah, etc.).
I did enjoy this movie, the first new light comedy I'd seen in a long time. (I mostly watch older movies.)
I felt Miss McCarthy's role could have been played by any competent actress, most of her scenes involved action which were done by stunt people, so it didn't matter that it was her. Again, this was a case of trying to cash in on her popularity as an overweight comedienne. (She has lost weight recently and looks very nice; wonder how that will affect her career?)
She played the Sookie St. James character so well on Gilmore Girls, I don't want to give the idea that I dislike her, I don't. I just think she's riding a wave of popularity and I wish she had better material to work with to show her 'stuff.'
BUT having said that, I must say what really sells the movie and holds it up is the supporting cast! Brilliant choice of casting, every actor was great and believable and made the movie entertaining. I looked ever one up on IMDb to learn if I'd seen them previously and to learn or re-learn their names. Jason Statham was gorgeous as always and quite funny throughout. I have heard this might become a franchise and I would certainly watch a second just to see this cast.
My recommendation would be to watch it for pure entertainment and an enjoyable couple of hours!
