The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst (2015)
Gripping and Revealing
Wow...WOW WOW WOW! What a detestable little man Bob Durst was. He was a (poor) manipulator of people and, although charming to a degree, rather slimey and creepy with it. God help you if you didn't cow-tow to his wants, he'd simply make sure you wound up dead.
These 10 episodes are utterly astonishing and fantastically detailed - enough for you to make your mind up about "did he do it?" (as if there's any question!). But make your own mind up.
Andrew Jerecki handles Bob beautifully. If he intentionally led us down the "guilty" road, fantastic, but it seems that so many of the interviews were simply worded so well, Bob walks into indictments and every law suit is absolutely deserved.
We see an arrogance and righteousness in Bob and, although we know all programmes are edited to suit the wanted narrative, Andrew shows us Bob and his cast of misfits in a true light.
There are 12 episodes (The Jinx + The Jinx:Part 2) and I binged it, but I urge you to bear with and definitely view it - it is utterly fascinating and enlightening.
The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes (2022)
Enlightening and So Very Sad
Bit sceptical prior to watching (haven't we heard everything there is to hear?), but it quickly grabbed me and kept me absorbed til the end.
I've always had a fascination with MM, and felt enormous sadness her life ended so soon, and this gave us a more in-depth understanding of her - her awful childhood, the the clear results of that as an adult...she just never got over it.
Of course, her death is the thing that we all want to know about, and I think the outcome shown in this documentary may answer so many questions.
Yes, we could have done with less lip-syncing, but it supported the timeline. As for Peter Lawford...I'm so glad he feels as he does.
Sulphur and White (2020)
Utterly disturbing, but needed
Why have people rated this so low due to nudity? You know it's just skin right?!
Huge admiration for David Tait - the courage it must take to bare all to someone as close as his wife is unimaginable. To then carry on sharing his story whilst working for other children - what an incredibly brave man.
I know from experience how childhood trauma can manifest in adulthood, and it's terrifying, horrendous and mind-boggling. If we can just educate kids about sharing and honesty, maybe our future adults won't be as broken as David Tait was.
Talk to your kids. Do it now. There's no shame in being honest and open. I wish I had been.
Informer (2018)
Nice twist. Didn't see that coming!
As always, Paddy Considine plays his part exceptionally. Just my opinion but....
This is an amazingly well written, fantastically acted series. From the actor playing Raza (first role I see), to the well worn Paddy and Sunitra, every look, word and action is beautifully linked and played out.
Including politics, religion, stereotyping, split lives, family, betrayal and love, this script is well written, produced and directed, and should appeal to everyone with any awareness of the world today. It is also sad, funny, joyous and - at times - a little scary...watch it, enjoy it, and see what I mean!
Weaving through side stories that tease and take us off focus, every character is as important as the next, culminating in twists and a turn so unexpected, you won't see it coming in the slightest.
Being a massive fan of Shane Meadows' films, I've seen Paddy in many of his roles - and this one is played as superbly as any.
I would recommend this to anyone...if you're a little lost by the end of the first episode (though you shouldn't be), stick with it - it is, without doubt, worth it in the end.
