The Newsroom (2012)
Like being a fly on the wall at MSNBC
Decent writing and pacing, but too politically one-sided. While it's nice that real stories and events are portrayed, it would have been better to have the characters take neutral stances, or switch sides like moderates depending on the story, or even have some of the staff feel one way while others feel the opposite, and debate their differences intelligently. Instead, we get lectured to from a single perspective, and that's very off-putting to a large portion of the potential audience that doesn't identify with those politics or want to feel like they were being indoctrinated. It's a shame the potential of the show was wasted.
Station Eleven: Wheel of Fire (2021)
An episode so bad I won't finish the series
Straight after having finished the book, I watched this episode. Within 15 minutes, I was completely turned off by the writing, acting, and casting.
How hard would have been to have Jeevan attempt CPR, rather than having him come off as a complete idiot who just runs on-stage thinking he can help by doing absolutely nothing? And we're supposed to believe his doctor of a sister, so concerned about this new virus that she calls him in the middle of a hectic ER to warn him to blockade himself with their brother, is just walking around not wearing a mask during a very contagious pandemic while barking snarky orders at people and coughing directly onto her hand? And somehow, 5 carts of groceries adds up to $10k? I know it's Canada and stuff is expensive there, but come on. And then Jeevan goes from "I don't want to 'kidnap' you during this armagheddon scenario, so take a cab if you want" to telling the most unbelievable lie in the history of lying in the span of 5 seconds? And of course the blatant affirmative action casting of Miranda. Just a shoddy job all around.
Eternals (2021)
A long movie with too many plot holes
I'm not sure what insults the viewer more, the nonsense plot or asking us to believe in a "superhero" created by the hand of what is essentially God, and yet can't speak. A superhero forced to use sign language because the producers of this film thought forced diversity was a better direction to go than telling a good story.
Baroness Von Sketch Show (2016)
Occasionally funny
That's about the best I can say. Half the skits aren't funny at all, some start funny or have a funny setup but go on too long or get beaten into the ground. And then some stuff is genuinely funny. But it's the exception.
BoJack Horseman: Feel-Good Story (2019)
A Diane episode
So it's basically just a far left political rant, with some Bojack sprinkled in every few minutes.
South Side: Xbox (2019)
Excellent start!
A nice variety of well-acted and well-written characters had me laughing the entire time. Will definitely be keeping up with this series.
American Horror Story: The End (2018)
Doesn't get worse than this
Plot holes EVERYWHERE, terrible "acting", the most unrealistic premise in an episode of television I've ever watched. Last season was my first time watching this series, so I had high hopes for this new season. To say I was let down is an understatement.
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown: Pittsburgh (2017)
It's a shame what this show became
An endless stream of locals complaining about all the high earning white people trying to spend money and even (gasp!) live in their communities. Racism, classism, and this episode even had the bonus of an actual socialist!
American Horror Story: Valerie Solanas Died for Your Sins: Scumbag (2017)
Ignore any harsh criticism of this episode
Lena Dunham's performance is being widely panned, but if you dig deeper on any of these opinions, you find out that these people came into the episode with a strongly negative bias towards her. People who can't separate someone's personal life from their professional life. She did a fantastic job playing Valerie, and was by far the highlight of the episode. If you want a poor performance to point to, Frances Conroy was distractingly mediocre and melodramatic.
