Best Harry Potter Movie to date
17 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I totally disagree with the bad reviews on this movie. Yes, some plots elements were not in the movie but I think it was a good thing and I did not miss them. The books grew bigger as the series went on, and in fact the last book in so big that they talk of releasing 2 movies to cover it.

The movie stands very well on its own and it is really well done. The only thing that bothered me was the lack of action concerning Drako and his mission and how it drags to get to its resolution.

The effects are quite good and the tone of the movie is excellent.

I would not recommend to bring very young children because the movie is very serious and they will get bored.

Thumbs up for this really good movie.

Virtuality (2009 TV Movie)

Not very original, not very well done, not very interesting
27 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
It could be a good show, some characters are interesting, but the whole show is severely lacking in wit and originality.

They made it clear enough that the whole thing is a simulation in itself and if you don't get it watching the pilot episode then you might want to continue watching it. It tries to be mysterious like Lost (a kind of Lost in Space) but it really isn't.

The computer is a rip off of 2001's HAL, and the space ship is a version of Bio-dome in space, but less funny.

The actors do a fine job, and the dialogues are fine, but not extremely well written. The special effects are a bit cheap for 2009.

It is watchable, but only if you are out of other stuff to watch...

The Spirit (2008)

Indulgent piece of crap
24 April 2009
Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Frank Miller, and I loved Sin City. But this movie is really a load of crap. Visually interesting, but not as cutting edge as Sin City from which it is borrowing much of its style but without its spirit (pun intended). The story is so flat, uninteresting and stupid that it tanks the movie. The best thing you can do is watch it with the sound off (if you really have time to waste and want to watch it anyway). Either Frank Miller has done this movie while under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms, or I never truly understood his work up to now, and I deeply regret it. This movie is Sin City on crack, with half its brain gone and the other half mentally retarded.

A very nice tale
18 April 2009
When I saw the previews of this movie, I wasn't too sure it would be good. And when I read some of the reviews here it really didn't look like a movie I would want to see. But I am a real fan of 3D animation and I will eventually see every feature movie, even if it is to look at the technique only. I have dabbled myself in 3D for several years so I can watch movies from an educated stand point on the 3D itself as well as cinema, which I studied in University. So I went to see this movie and was pleasantly surprised. It seems it is a rendition of a book but I haven't read it so my comments are without prejudgment of the story itself.

The story, while having several classic plot elements (princess that awaits for her knights to save her for example) is also about courage, honor, and selflessness. It is well paced, well written, and well executed. This is not a plot that will surprise you with incredible twist elements, but we have to remember that it is aimed at a young audience. It reminds our kids of values that are too often muddied in kid movies these days. Desperaux is well rounded, and unlike other reviews I read, I cared about his journey, as I also cared about his rat friend as well. Technically, it is a well made movie with a style of its own that recalls greatly the pages of old children books. I am very confident in recommending this movie for all the family.

I could have done something else for 2 hours
8 February 2008
Really average slasher movie with a lot of repeats of effects seen in earlier, better Alien and Predator movies.

It feels like it is done by a director with very little imagination. It brings nothing new to the franchise and it is mostly a waste of time. Half way through the movie and most characters still don't relate to the Aliens or Predator except as victims. Who cares about Joe-schmoe who will be done with in 20 minutes and had absolutely no link to anything.

I enjoyed the first Alien vs Predator very much. It had a story. This movie has none.

Dragons fly and so does this movie
14 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I bought this movie on DVD some time ago and watch it with the same pleasure time after time. This is not a typical Hollywoodian type of action movie. The look is gritty and muddy and the movie beats on its own pace. There is little I did not like in the story or the treatment of the movie. The dragons are great, the characters are human and believable and the effects are fantastic. This is a movie I recommend for people who like action and still want an intelligent script that can hold to some scrutiny (as long as we can believe in the existence of Dragons). The only peeve I could have is at the end with the seemingly inesplicable sacrifice of one of the main characters. Other than the shock effect it accomplishes nothing in terms of the story.
