Yvonne Mitchell's stunning performance
2 May 2018
I recently saw this film on Talking Pictures, and intended to switch-off after a few minutes, as it didn't seem like my cup of tea (eg film noir). I then gradually found myself bewitched by Yvonne Mitchell's stunning performance - one of the best I can recall by any actress. The domestic scene where she attempts to get the flat and herself ready, while getting steadily plastered, is a masterpiece of the actor's art. I also have to say, I find her drop-dead gorgeous - so why anyone would want to dump her is a bit of a mystery !

Columbo: An Exercise in Fatality (1974)
Season 4, Episode 1

classic Columbo
26 March 2018
Also my favourite Columbo, although by 1974 the series was already past it's consistent best. Robert Conrad is completely convincing as the franchise crook and murderer. There is very little of the usual playful toying with the detective, which while amusing can also be slightly unrealistic. Instead, Conrad displays the confident aggression which you would expect from his character, as he gradually becomes cornered by the persistent Columbo. The screenplay is particularly, strong, despite a slightly weak denouement (hence the missing star in the rating !) Franchising was the hot business theme in the early seventies and there must have been plenty of scams like this.

Never Let Go (1960)
forgotten British masterpiece
19 January 2018
How come I've never seen this gut busting, ball grabbing, bum clenchingly great film before ?!? A clear precursor to French Connection and Dirty Harry and a lost British classic.
