Could be much better
11 October 2014
This movie about teenager Andrés could have been so much better, because the story is interesting. Not that much happens, but it's a real coming of age movie. And for me it was interesting, because we don't see many movies about this subject from Argentina.

Too bad that the director decided it has to be a sort of arty style. So you get dizzy from all the long shots turning around in rooms several times. And almost the half of the movie is out of focus or at least the biggest part of the screen. As if was meant to be some semi-documentary shot with a home-camera. But even the cheapest home-cameras have auto-focus, so you don't get this result. While the camera is very close on the subject you get a strange layout of the screen.

So I gave the movie a 5, mainly because of the story and not the way it was filmed.

Tried to hard
28 February 2014
Even that I'm a big fan of unknown movies, this one couldn't convince me at all. This story about two brothers and their mother living in a city somewhere. One committed a crime and has to pay for it. The younger brother soon to be left alone with their mother, who lives in some sort of fantasy and has a drinking problem. The younger brother coming of age and wanting to have his brother's approval.

The biggest problem I had with this movie is the way the director wanted to make it look sad. The black and white filming, the sad buildings where they live, skies being dark all the time, sparse lighting at night. The lighting coming from aside instead of from above. A rabbit walking on the city streets at night. A toad being near one of the characters. Water or rain falling down nice visible in the light, like in slow motion. Very little talk. It was all too much for me. The story could have been told in a other way, making the same points.

No crime, No drama, No comedy
7 January 2011
The idea of this movie was surely great: a crime happens and some people try to solve the mystery.

However the result is something in between everything. It has his funny moments, but they are rare. What are not rare are the moments that (almost) naked guys are visible. Nothing wrong with that as long as it fits in the story. Or you want to make a (soft) porn movie.

And then there is a voice over explaining everything, because it was too difficult to let the movie do so. The acting to another difficult part. A lot of the actors need some training if they every want to play a real part. But I doubt if that is their goal. Looks like they all had some fun in the few days this movie was made and didn't care about the result.

I gave the movie a 5/10 because of the idea and to stimulate other independent producers to get a lot of new stuff out, even if no or little budget is available.

A clear inside view of a important business.
7 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This little movie tells the story of Leo, a young guy living in a small town in the Philippines. Fills his days with nothing except enjoying the sea and a very little bit of work. Around him are the girl Milagring who is in love with him and want to marry him and Mr. Mando who does nothing else then talking to himself saying poets. When a "talent scout" comes to town he convinces him to come with him to Manilla to become an actor, because he has the body, the equipment and the skin. After arriving there things become clear and Leo ends in the "entertainment" industry, serving young and older men. Almost every customer thinks he should become and actor. He has no success in that business, because the supply is much more then the demand. Because he doesn't enjoy his new life after a while he returns to his hometown continuing his old life style. Milagring is still waiting for him. Leo now sees that Mr. Mando lived the same life his a doing now.

So far the story. What starts as a movie about the life of a young guy in rural area and later Manilla turns into a clear complain about the way these guys are lured into the business. This is done by letting the characters talk direct to the camera clearing their point of view.

Well done.

Little thriller
9 June 2008
This movie sometimes is really scary. All the usual aspects are there: a big house with a lot of rooms, a creepy landlady and some other strange people walking around.

The main character (Jeffrey) is a decent young man with a job as architect. His is in love with a unpredictable guy (Rene). To be close with the guy Jeffrey rents a apartment in the same building without letting him know that. The previous tenant left suddenly, leaving his belongings in the apartment. Then things become interesting. The landlady has a handyman available who can't speak and is deaf. And since Rene isn't interested in Jeffrey anymore he has time to work at the building finding some strange things.

Since this is a thriller a lot of things happen where anybody with a clear view would say: keep out and get away. But that won't make a long and interesting movie.

Overall the acting in the movie is good. The story is a little bit thin, but not annoying. Don't think too much and just enjoy.

Little 80's love in New Zealand
27 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This little movie is about two guys who meet and what follows is the path they follow.

Expect nothing big, but what we see is just a story about two people falling in love and the troubles that comes for free with that process. In this movie we see Johnny (Iain Rea) who is a quick guy with a fast mouth and has Richard (Robert Pollock) in sight. Richard is a nerd, except for the looks, and Johnny is a Italian guy, except for the looks, who doesn't obey the laws always. Richard lives with his sister who has a boyfriend and these four are the only people in this movie.

Overall it's a nice movie and in mine opinion a fresh one because it's made in the late 80's. The theme of gay love was not that common shown in movies. The acting is OK and it's really a feel good movie.

Free at last.
18 August 2007
What to say about this movie? A married couple has more then just each other. After playing around for some time things gets more serious. A difficult choice has to be made: continue the old situation or start all over by following the heart. Guess what happens at the end.

This movie seems to be very low budget. But a good story don't have to be expensive. It looks like a play that has been converted to a movie only by using several cheap locations (at least very little other people visible) more than just the stage, in this one the house. From the first minute future developments are clear as water. Nothing unexpected happens. Sometimes you may think watching a soft porn movie, in which case you know in advance that there's no story.

I find this movie disappointing so that's explains the vote (4).

You're in the army now.
9 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Funny movie about a (private?) army in Japan, where the young recruit Shinohara is assigned to the older soldier Takizawa. They learn that the country is more important than then live of the soldiers. This is best shows with the very nice line in the movie: "Japanese of origin do not just love. They have a passion. They yearn and sacrifice their body.".

The older soldier learns the recruit everything and they share a room. At night the master uses the services provided by the recruit, even they aren't gay, which is common in this army. At night this is a lot of action in the beds, which is very proper displayed in this movie.

The army has some sort of a dangerous plan which involves that there is little chance that they will survive. As soon something goes wrong the soldiers perform "hara-kiri", which is also learned in a funny scene. Volunteers are needed and both Shinohara and Takizawa take place in the action. The night before everybody has a good workout between the sheets, especially the main characters. I will not spoil the ending but it's a surprising one!

Overall a nice movie.

In perfect families also bad things happens.
6 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A "perfect" family is torn apart when the son Julien is arrested and he confesses a murder. His father Jean (a very intense character) is furious about the whole situation which he won't believe. He tries everything to find out what really happened, as long as his son is not guilty. His mother has her own way to get behind the real story. Involved also are the his ex-girlfriend Vanessa who now has a thing with his best friend Sasha, who has a criminal record. Julien don't have a criminal record, which explains the title. As the research continues things get more the way the parents want, because Julien seems to be not guilty. Some friends finally talk to both the parents and the police, but there are some gaps. Since Sasha didn't tell his side of the story, Julien changes his version and gets out of prison. But what did really happened that night? And how does Julien deal with both the truth as with his pushing father? Watch this very good movie! French cinema at his best.

Ibiza Dream (2002)

Live life as you want
16 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This a is somewhat strange movie about 3 friends, 2 guys and 1 girl, who live at the island Ibiza. Each of them choose a different way in life: 1 as free person who lives life by the day, 1 as a more planned spiritual one and the last one doesn't know what to do, until finding a new life in Africa and helping the poor people there. As the seasons turn and Ibiza changes we see how the 3 main characters keep coming back to each other, until the moment that some things happens and only one of them survives. The setting at the famous holiday island is not a main part in the story, but more at the side: could be at any other location. Overall: Expect nothing big, but just a movie about the little things in daily life.
