"Inspired by" would have been a better choice of words
2 October 2022
The show is so different in its setting and the main character and his background that it would be more accurate to say that it was inspired by the novels, not based on them. In that case it would have been a worthy tale for fans and non-fans alike. Still, if we consider the show as an independent tale, only borrowing some aspects of the novels, it is only fair to say that the show is very interesting and well-built. The dialogues are beautifully written, except for the parts where it become obvious that the writers were forcing a political or social statement, these are the parts where the lack of subtlety takes away from the beauty of the dialogues and the whole show in general.

The characters are beautifully portrayed by the two main actors, but their chemistry needs more work; sometimes you sense that the two characters are a bit stiff around each other whereas you need them to portray a convincing romance.

Sam Reid has done such a great job bringing Lestat's character to life! Jacob Anderson's Louis on the other hand is so different than the Louis in the novels or the movie that you feel as if you are dealing with a different character. Whereas the Louis we have previously known in the novels and the movie was the portrayal of melancholy, this Louis can be described as young man who is sometimes sad, but mostly has a bone to pick! Still, the way the character behaves suits his background and his circumstances, so the choices made for the portrayal of the character was not a simple "race swap" and the changes actually affected the show accordingly, and for this reason, although the character is different, it is still enjoyable to sit through his tale.

This is a review based on the first two episodes of the series. At this point I am enjoying it very much, but I have to consider it a tale "inspired by" the novels, and not based on them.

The writing is great and the cast are brilliant!

Good writing, good casting, and good pacing; this show has all the main components necessary for good entertainment. It takes a look at parenting from a different angle, and offers an amusing experience with its particular kind of humor.

Although appearing as a comedy and filled with humor, it addresses many serious issues related to parenting and relationships within a family. It does a good job at defining each character through their relationships, and at the same time leaves enough time to explore their individual traits.

After watching each episode, and having a good time doing so, I would often find myself thinking about the characters and their situations. Season one did good job at showing parenting as this ordeal that the two main characters are trying to overcome, or at least cope with as best as they can. But season two is where things really gets out of their hand, by the end of this season you will really feel for the father, Paul. I'm curious how the third season will turn out!
