The Honeymoon (2022)
Nothing more frustrating...
Than people behaving like rude and crude morons. Well if you like that - this is the film for you. Truly cringe making, predictable and tortuous. Watched as much as we could bear and then opted for our second choice (Bad Sisters) - thank God we did since it's a universe of better. Ok. I realise this is not super constructive but it's hard to know what to say in any kind of positive light. The worst film I've started watching in months - possibly years. That said... it maybe to your taste. Ok Some do the acting is pretty good. It's just the rest of it which is painful to behold. Pulling nails appeals more...
Foundation (2021)
Good but the usual childish elements
I don't know how much this diverges from the original Foundation story - quite a lot in places I believe. However, coming to it without that subjective view (and I totally get it) the story within this adaptation is in many ways epic. The visuals are fantastic and the actors, characters and overall "feel" is immersive. All of that said it is let down by the usual "Hollywood" (though it is not) childishness when it comes to the portrayal of some details. For example - the classic "stormtrooper" shootouts. One or two of our "heroes" versus a lot of "highly trained" troops in a shootout. Guess what? Our heroes are impossible to hit. Meanwhile they (barely) skulk behind some small flimsy cover and pick off opponent after opponent. Crap. Other things like spaceships in the middle of loads of asteroids - really!? Doubtless someone will say "oh they've got shields blah blah". Nope - it's someone saying "visually it looks cool - don't worry about the details". So - story, acting, visuals - really good. Some of the childish staged bits - less good and a lazy shame.
Night Sky (2022)
Slow burn with some irritations
Starts very slowly and doesn't get a lot faster. I like the expanding sense of mystery - always appealing. However the older I get the more the details seem to matter - and to really grate when they're wrong. Some of the characters are less convincing than others (eg Byron) and some, frankly , irritating. Top of that list is Franklin but Toni's mother comes a close second. In terms of logical continuity - for example - when you pop out of a "secret" tunnel why the hell would you just wander off and not close the hatch behind you? (Answer : lazy direction/scripting). When your grand daughter does not believe your fantastic tales - why not just show her? Otherwise it's okay...
How It Ends (2018)
Pretty good...
So I'm a bit sick of "action" post apocalyptic type movies and TV shows. Every bad is always really bad - which is boring. Constant "for the kids" action is boring. The hick sheriff always being completely hick - boring. So in this film there is a build up (someone else said they felt there wasn't and should be - in general I agree with that - nothing worse than a zombie movie (which this is not) where it all starts at a certain point and five hours later the whole world has gone nuts - what rubbish) though it's not a massively long film so they need to get on with it. I liked the characters being unsure and frankly incompetent at first (except for old Tom). They evolved. Anyway - generally - enjoyed it and feel it deserves more than its five star rating.
More post apocalyptic movies please - but with believable characters and plots that are more imaginatively realistic. Not zombie attack after zombie attack. Super snore.
Intelligence (2020)
Excellent
Great series - makes me laugh out loud. Seems to be somewhat polarising in terms of like/not like. I hated The Office - but many didn't.
David Schwimmer is excellent and plays his part perfectly. It's all good - sit back & enjoy.
Murdertown (2018)
Wooden presenter
Katherine Kelly might be a good actress (I don't know) but she's pretty awful at presenting this. Her "driving" couldn't be more fake looking if it was in a go cart. She always looks like she's pretty much reading everything she's saying. I suppose someone said "I know" if she's driving a car we can tow her on a trailer snd stick her lines on the windscreen. Oh, and she mustn't move her hands on the wheel or "look" at the road - that might look too real.
The stories are depressing but interesting for all the usual slightly guilty reasons that true crime appeals. The cops, journalists and in some cases victims do a fair job of telling their stories.
The Pursuit of Love (2021)
Brilliant!
What a fun a refreshing series this is! Nothing I don't like about it. It does seem somewhat polarising though. I am not sure what some people expected/wanted - obviously not this. First class, fun, excellent.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Pretty good...
I realise I am very mch out of kilter with the majority of reviewers I've read through (almost exclusively 9s and 10s) in feeling that this is underwhelming. I get that if you are a real Star Wars fan it's probably going to float your boat. It does have a lot going for it in that sense. Where I feel it lets things down is it's stereotypical approach to action scenes (and a load of pointless side-quest type events, but I guess you need that to pad things out to a series). Why - and this series is absolutely not the only offender - do all baddies behave as if they don't care about their own lives. They all fight to the end and the to the death - which is rubbish. Most would end up running away - but no, we're going to keep on shooting till everyone is dead. And weapons seem to do pretty much nothing a lot of the time (especially when we're shooting at one of the good guys...) Whilst there are some things to like - for me it lacks depth and soul that would make it special. Instead it's another formulaic approach to an action series.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Excellent series
More of a long film in seven parts. A compelling story from start to finish. Great acting, well developed characters and chess made to look exciting, dramatic and suspenseful. Enjoyed every moment. If only there were more programs with this depth, story and acting.
Ad Astra (2019)
Awful rubbish
The main failings in this film relate to the simplistic and childish elements added by Hollywood types with money and no sense of science or how to construct a great plot. As someone else has said - pirates on the moon "after our resources" is stupid. Stopping to assist another ship and encountering crazed baboons - please! The end explosion (& outcome from it) are totally childish. Why be so lazy!!?? You've got some money - pay for a decent plot and script.
Complete rubbish!
