Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets (2005)
Chocolate is a usual suspect.
Chocolate is a shot-by-shot, sometimes scene-by-scene and many times dialogue-by-dialogue rip-off of Bryan Singer's The Usual Suspects. Maybe it was a tribute to that film on it's ten-year anniversary since that was released in 1995. Nevertheless, this movie is an awful rehash. And i am appalled by the director making claims about it's originality and brilliance. It's just shameful. After the movie I did not feel bad about wasting money on this but I was let down because of the unscrupulous nature of the filmmaker. It is just a shame. Of course, there some minor changes, Kobayashi from the original was made into Rashomon (oh turning-in-the-grave bits). Keyser Soze was made into Murtaza Arzaai and the works. This film doesn't deserve any applause. Sorry, Vivek Agnihotri, you are a liar.
Loads of T&A. The acting was good in parts. Anil Kapoor went overboard on some occasions and there were some funny one-liners but nothing which would make you look beyond the lying, cheating and stealing (The Movie Idea that is.) People always complain about the lack of originality in Bollywood nowadays. there isn't a paucity of ideas but due to directors like these. He's a first-time director if I am not mistaken. and instead of breaking the norm, he went ahead and took the plunge. i saw many other reviews in Indian dailies and Indian news websites. not many of them have mentioned anything about this movie being a rip-off. i am totally angered with this dishonesty.
Sarkar (2005)
I haven't seen The Godfather...Sarkar is quite brilliant.
i am sure most users on this site are not sure of what RGV has tried to do. yes there are shades of GF as my friends kept telling me and i surely saw some adaptation of the whole idea of a family "business" in the Indian context. but there is more to Sarkar than this. the film maker starts off with the note saying this is his version of the great godfather, but one must look at it from the point of view of a new film and not from that of a remake of the godfather. surely then one would, as i did, see many good point and some quite brilliant points about this whole film.
firstly let me say that the screen presence of the two main leads, Big B and Abhishek, quite brilliant. many scenes are just watchable and drool-able because of their presence despite no conversations. that to me really signified something new in terms of Hindi cinema. the lighting f several scenes is quite nice. the shadowy silhouetted look really works for RGV. Kay Kay is also really good in his role as the rebel.
the movie will be a major hit because of the word of mouth publicity which works for films in bollywood. not many people come out of the film disappointed if they don't know what The Godfather is.
I hadn't seen it myself, now i am watching it as i post here. will compare them if at all it is necessary.
Doodh Ka Karz (1990)
Hindi classic
the mother, Aruna Irani actually feeds milk from her breast to a snake. this is a classic Hindi film characteristic. man it's funny. all u guys must watch this if u find awful Hindi films funny. because this is up there in the faeces pile . or down there . suit yourself.
so the snake saves the mother's son, Shroff. when he grows up and repays his KARZ (debt) to his mother. apart from that the movie is run of the mill. if u like bad films then u will surely like this one.
its one for all the mothers' days that u have missed. watch it repay your debt to your mother . or that cow which fed u milk. Aruna Irani plays the legendary mother, still spoken of in Hindi film circles for her role in this movie. and also for her other exploits in b grade films. Jackie Shroff the man who grew up in a slum in Bombay plays the mother's son. get cozy with your popcorn and drink some milk and u will surely like this. because i did.
