Unorthodox (2020)
Very real, fascinating, but not appropriate for all audiences
I loved watching this series. I found it authentic and realistic - an excellent portrayal of the ultra-orthodox extreme sect of Satmar Jews.
The main character's struggles and dilemmas are ones ever person faces, which makes the show relevant to all.
I was upset though by the nudity, and felt it was unnecessary. Especially given the "religiosity" of the topics, it is likely that orthodox/religious people would want to watch this, and of course it is totally inappropriate for them to see women undressed.
I also felt it cheapened the show.
Apart from that - highly recommended.
Catching Feelings (2017)
lovely but boring
I was excited to see this movie as an ex-South African.
And I loved the scenery, the Joburg vibe, the reality of this little slice of middle class South Africa.
But, on the other hand I was bored. The movie was slow. The acting was ok, but the story line weak. I found myself skipping parts.
So a medium review I'm afraid. Hoping for better stuff next time.
Shtisel (2013)
Fascinating insight into a totally different world
I really am enjoying this interesting series.
It opens a window into a completely different world, but one that is so familiar.
The series is extremely well acted with no pretentious melodrama.
I enjoy the authenticity of the small winding Jerusalem streets, the modesty of the characters and the plain truths of the dramas being acted out.
Well worth watching.
