Love, Death & Robots: Life Hutch (2021)
Season 2, Episode 7
5/10
Very simple
14 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was excited to watch this because of Michael B. Jordan's involvement in it, which made me expect one of the stronger episodes of the series. It was okay for what it was, but I never felt particularly invested and by the end of I just found myself thinking, ''That was it?''. The concept of it is incredibly simple. There is nothing really new about it, and in terms of survival stories, there are some much stronger ones out there and this one just fell really flat for me.

Spoilers:

Usually with survival stories like these, you would expect some meaningful backstory and some reasons to actually care for the protagonist. Michael B. Jordan however is just a nameless fighter pilot. We are shown some of the events leading up to his crash, but none of it really holds any meaning. It just happens, and doesn't tell us anything about his character. Like let's say, he has a fatal flaw in his personality and ways of doing things, that got him into this situation. But no, his ship is shot and he crashlands on a planet. There are no meaningful character relationships, either. Usually in a survival story, the character will try to survive for someone else's sake, like a love interest or a kid. Something in their life keeps them wanting to survive, but Michael B. Jordan just wants to survive and the entire event just seems more like an inconvenience than anything else. The events of the story are also incredibly random. The entire conflict is that an unfeeling maintenance robot is malfunctioning, which for some reason makes it want to destroy anything that moves. So MBJ has to feign death, so the robot doesn't kill him. During his flashbacks of events leading up to his crash, he remembers that he has a flashlight in his pocket, and thinks of a way out. He uses the flashlight to trick the maintenance robot into attacking itself, and manages to overpower it. The story then ends with MBJ calling for rescue, and the computerized voice confirms that rescue is on the way. Again, would be nice if everything didn't just work out in the end, and that they left us with some kind of ambiguity as to whether he would be rescued or not. But no, he most likely gets rescued and in the end, we have no reason to care at all.

Overall one of the weakest episodes, and I don't understand what the point of MBJ was. Why get a well-known and talented actor to play a character that has absolutely no character?

Love, Death & Robots: Pop Squad (2021)
Season 2, Episode 3
7/10
My overall favorite episode in a mostly dissapointing second season
14 May 2021
I really liked the concept and setting of this story, and the character-development of the main protagonist as he begins doubting himself and his actions, as well as the system he represents and is a part of. The story definitely resonates, although it isn't as inventive or powerful as some of the episodes of season 1. There is a lot to appreciate in terms of filmatic quality. The acting is really good in some parts, the animation is great, the set-design is simple and realistic, and the score was okay but didn't really stand out to me. At times the set design reminded me of Blade Runner, which I think was purposeful. My biggest criticism with the story was that the ending seemed kind of abrupt and didn't really feel earned, which is the case for a lot of the other episodes, as well. Other than that I thought it was good for what it was.

12 Angry Men (1957)
9/10
Great story
29 April 2021
12 Angry Men is a courtroom drama centered on a jury. There has been a murder, and on trial is the young african american son of the victim. The entire jury is unanimous, and believe the boy is guilty. One of the jurors however, Davis, believes that the young man is innocent, and votes not guilty. Argument ensues.

This film is kept alive by its phenomenal story and the incredible performances. The cinematography, editing and music choices are slightly off. The story and pacing however defined the genre for generations, and made the film a classic.

The film has its flaws, and they are easily identifiable. Several scenes display what is clearly the shadow of a boom mic, covering the entire background wall. All because the director didn't bother thinking about their lighting.

9/10.

Best comic-book movie of all time?
29 April 2021
Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight starring Christian Bale as the caped crusader, and Heath Ledger as the hero's nemesis, Joker. The entire Marvel universe put together does not come close to matching this legendary film, revered as the greatest superhero movie ever made.

The cinematography by Wally Pfister earned an academy award nomination, the music by Hans Zimmer is one of the greatest of his legendary career, Heath Ledger's performance won him a posthumous academy award for best supporting actor, and the film was nominated in a total of 8 categories.

10/10, probably the greatest superhero movie of all time.

The Godfather (1972)
10/10
May be the greatest movie ever made
29 April 2021
I'm personally not that into gangster or mafia movies, I'm one of the rare people you will meet to tell you that Goodfellas is kinda overrated, and far from Scorsese's best film. There are however a few exceptions to that, and on the very top of that list, is Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather.

This movie is pretty much flawless. The cinematography is fantastic, the music is beautiful and fits with the italian mafia theme perfectly, the performances from Al Pacino and Marlon Brando in particular are among the greatest ever captured on film, and the film received 9 Academy Award nominations with 3 wins, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Brando.

10/10 across the board for me, and may be the undisputedly greatest film of all time.

Truly amazing

Phenomenal cinematography, great score, fantastic acting, all in the hands of talented filmmaker Frank Darabont, based on one of the greatest novels by revered writer Stephen King.

Completely deserving of a 10/10 rating, and deserves its #1 spot on IMDb.

Quicksand (2019)
10/10
A rare case of perfect
2 July 2019
Incredible story, phenomenal acting, great cinematography in places, really connected to and emphasized with the characters, even Sebastian in a lot of ways. The acting really is superb in really every case, I really don't think anyone could have performed any better than they did. The only critique I can say I have is for the cinematography. Especially when I payed attention to it, I noticed a lot of zooms and weird camera movements, but this is considering Fincher cinematography as the gold standard. The music worked incredibly well also, but nothing too memorable. Again, held to the standard of Zimmer or Thomas Newman. One critique I seem to see everywhere is the length of the series and the attention to unimportant scenes, but I disagree completely with this. I've always loved slow-burning movies and tv series, and have never been easily bored while watching a deeply intricate story unfold. I wasn't bored throughout any scenes, and was completely glued to the screen at all times. Every single scene either served to telling the story, or helped build characters and relationships.

Overall, it honestly impacted me more than most stories ever do, and it's incredibly rare for me to relate to and care about characters at this level. The last series to do this was Chernobyl, before that Sharp Objects. Been getting really into miniseries lately :)

10/10 and also it's Swedish, I'm Norwegian so I have to love it.
