The Unborn (2009)
Totally underrated! Don't let the bad reviews fool you!!!!
I'm no film critic. If a film has bad lighting, I normally won't notice something like that so if you're looking for that, you're reading the wrong review. Another thing, I've noticed that a lot of good horror movies get bad reviews. I think it's because everyone's different. The things that scare you may not scare me.
My Mom and I have been watching a lot of Netflix movies. We've watched some good movies, some OK movies, and some really BAD movies! It was my turn to choose & I landed on this movie.
I saw Gary Oldman's name (someone I recognized) & decided to watch it.
I think it had a great story and I think it was original. Sure, it had some typical horror movie effects & ideas. But name me a film that doesn't!
It began pretty fast, jumping right into the story.
Casey Beldon is your typical teen. She lives with her Dad & has a boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), friends, and goes to school (I assume college). She does babysit for some extra money (a young Atticus Shaffer). She has kind of a sad past which you'll find out about. Things start going bad for her when she starts having these frightening dreams at night & visions of a kid she's never seen before during the day. This takes her several different places to try and find answers to her questions. The acting was good, along with the actors I mentioned, I was pleasantly surprised to see Carla Cugino and Idris Elba too.
Oh, you may want to watch holding a drink during this movie because you may end up wearing it.
The movie was so good, I was nervous that the ending would be dumb. That's definitely something you shouldn't be nervous about!
I didn't see it coming and those are the best kinds of endings, right?
The Crossing (2018)
I wish people wouldn't have quit on this show so easily.
I've heard people complain that this plot has been done 100 times before after only watching one or two episodes. I don't know about you, but when I watch a new show, in the first couple episodes, I can usually pick out things that have been done 100 times! But then it got better & in my opinion, the Crossing does too.
So Steve Zahn plays a Sheriff named Jude in a small town (I don't remember what it's called). Jude has a past & to make a long story short without the spoilers, he was in a big city, some stuff went bad, so he comes to idyllic small town where nothing usually goes bad & things go bad.Admittedly, that's been done a few times.) Of course Big Brother Government shows up & takes over. It turns out that these people aren't illegal aliens trying to escape a war torn situation. They're actually Americans trying to escape a war torn situation. This show was cancelled but I still don't want to spoil anything so I can't say anything more about where the people are from or how they got there.
There's a lot going on in this show, which is why I wish people would've stayed with it. Every episode, something new happens or we find out something new about someone. It's mystery, sci-fi, action, comedy, love story, and drama all in one show. I'm very disappointed that more people didn't give it a chance.
The Diabolical (2015)
I wish I would have looked at the spoilers before I watched this!
There have been times that I've read reviews on here and disagreed with them. I don't know if it's because I have a different taste in movies- or maybe it's because I don't critique every aspect of the film. I don't really like it, but sometimes I have to skim through the spoilers to see if I want to watch the movie and this time, I didn't do that. I WISH I WOULD HAVE!
(Don't forget, there's spoilers ahead!)
The beginning wasn't bad. I mean, in any movie, things usually begin pretty slow. The family is introduced, blah, blah. But this movie smacks you in the face a few minutes in & I liked that- it's different. Then the family is introduced with all their baggage. Ali Larter plays Madison, the Mom. I like Ali, she's a good actress but matter how good she is, she couldn't make Madison look any less stupid! It's NOT rocket science. If you think your house is haunted, YOU MOVE!! IF, for some reason you can't get out of the house right away, you keep your kids with you at all times! It started to remind me of Lori and Carl on The Walking Dead! Jacob has a bad temper- which we end up seeing more than we even realize. Little Haley is freakin adorable!
After a while, the story takes a sharp left turn and never finds its way back onto the road and it ends up being a pretty bumpy ride! The story was a good idea and it could've been really good if it was done the right way. But it wasn't. It left sooooo many unanswered questions! The ending was terrible. Does it mean that she'll be ok?! I'm so confused!!
Maybe I just didn't get it, maybe you will. I'm just not sure you want to take that chance though, it's 2 hours of your life that you can't get back!
Ominous (2015)
It was OK.
I saw that Barry Watson was in this movie and I haven't seen him in a while so I decided to watch.
This poor couple Rachel & Michael Young (Esmé Bianco & Barry Watson) lose their son Jacob played by Gavin Lewis. A creepy man (Mark Lindsay Chapman) approaches them & claims to be able to bring the boy back from the dead. In their grief, they accept the offer (I was always told not to accept candy from a stranger....I'm thinking that an offer to bring a dead loved one back to life falls into the no-no category as well). After they take the deal, shockingly, bad things start happening.
As the movie went on, I questioned a lot of things- especially the decisions the characters made. When the movie ended though, I thought about it & some of the things they did made sense in a "we brought back our dead kid, he's not the same, & now we don't know what to do" kind of way. The best thing about the movie- and why I gave it 5 stars- is Gavin Lewis as Jacob. There were times this kid genuinely creeped me out. He would've been downright scary if the CGI wasn't so terrible. The worst part of this movie is definitely the end. It. Was. Awful. There's really nothing special about this movie, it's been done a few times before. I wouldn't recommend watching it- but I guess it depends on what you like.
What I learned from watching this movie: If it moves like a duck & quacks like a duck- there's a chance that it still may not be the duck that you know & love. Just say no to tall, dark, & creepy strangers. Barry Watson isn't a bad actor but the only 7th Heaven kid that I know has done anything worth mentioning is Jessica Biel. That's only because she married Timberlake.
I do apologize if this review seemed a little scatter brained but it's my first review without spoilers.
Needle (2010)
I actually liked it.
I'm not in the entertainment industry at all. While I've watched A LOT of different kinds of movies, I'm not an expert in the way a movie is made. I'm not an expert in direction, acting, lighting, production, or the 1000 other things that go into making a movie. I'm only an expert in sitting on my couch with a blanket & a snack while watching movies & I have a lot of colleagues! I'm not qualified to comment on these things so I won't.
I was a little surprised because this movie hooked me pretty fast. I'm not saying it was great but the idea is an awesome one. I watched it on the Chiller Channel. If you're not familiar with Chiller, it's kind of the Syfy of horror movies. I guess whether or not you'll like it depends on your taste in movies. There are some gory parts- but it is more thriller than horror. It's a who-dun-it type of movie. It's done like most who-dun-it movies are and can be a little predictable. It's worth a watch- but maybe you should lower your expectations just in case. You may be surprised in a good way.
At St.Mary's College, we meet a kid named Ben. He's your usual ornery college kid who likes to party with his group of friends. Thanks to his late father, he inherits an 18th century box built by a French artist named Rubinstein. He called the box "Le Vaudou Mort". (Vaudou means voodoo and Mort means death in French.) The box is cool looking- something I'd totally buy at some flea market or yard sale but for some reason, it doesn't really look old. Anyway based on the name of the box, it's easy to figure out that Ben's life is going to change for the absolute worst. Curious? I would be if I was reading this. So give it a try. It won't kill you.
Degrassi: Next Class (2016)
Different- NOT in a good way
I loved Next Generation so I mainly tuned into the New Class for the "reunion" and because my younger sister asked me to watch it with her.
To say I was disappointed is an understatement! I'm not an actor or a TV writer so I tend to try to stay away from talking too much about those things. But I have to this time. Some of the actors were great. Some were AWFUL. The writing? It was so predictable. There were times even I was able to finish the characters lines. It was corny too. It had a couple of what I call "Full House moments". (You remember- when Danny would talk to DJ or Stephanie and the music would start. Then we'd get the life lesson, a hug, and an apology.)
Before, Degrassi would focus on a lot more characters too. I guess there's only so much you can do with 10 episodes.
The reunion was OK. It was great seeing them- I just wish more had come back.
Maybe I'm just spoiled from watching The Next Generation, I don't know. What I do know is that TNG students weren't perfect- and everything wasn't resolved quickly. Sometimes things weren't resolved at all and that was OK because high school (and life) is that way. Now, in The Next Class, everything is tied up with a big pink bow on it. It's more after school special than anything else and it's a shame.
Minority Report (2015)
I don't like everything about it- but I like it.
I didn't see the movie- maybe that's the difference here. Again, this does contain spoilers.
I remember watching Nick Zano on "What I Like About You" & I didn't think he was a very good actor back then so I wasn't thrilled to see him on this. He's not great but he got better. The woman who plays Vega though, (I think her name's Megan but I can't remember) she's bad. She isn't very likable but I guess she's not going to be smiling & happy when all she's trying to stop a murder. Her Father was killed on the job- that probably doesn't help.
I can see how people wouldn't have liked it if they just watched an episode or two. It started off very slow. When they just had one of the pre-cogs (Dash) & Vega trying to stop these murders from happening, it was familiar & a little boring. As time went on though, we've gotten to see the other pre-cogs (Agatha & Arthur) get involved in the story & a little bit of their lives right after pre-crime stopped. One of Vega's superiors has noticed her great arrest record & is curious about it. The story has gotten better. If you've stopped watching, you should give it another try. (If you can get past the bad acting.)
Cloverfield (2008)
It was a little bit of a let down
I checked the Spoiler Box but just wanted to say again:: this contains SPOILERS. This movie came out in 2008 and I just got done watching it on August 24th 2015. I remember seeing the ads for this movie, but never got to the theater & kind of forgot about it. Until I saw it on TV. It started out good. Except for the guy that was holding the camera (Hudson but they called him Hud). He wasn't very likable. And he ended up surviving almost the entire movie. It's weird because these people had the best luck and the worst luck at the same time. First, they went through A LOT & all should have probably died 5 times before they actually did. That was their good luck. Their bad luck was that they just couldn't get away from this monster. I know they headed right into the hot zone trying to save that girl (I can only remember her last name for some reason.) I know the creature was big but so is New York. I guarantee you that others got away. When they left the party and on their way to the girls apartment building, I understood that part as they were in the city. But it was driving me crazy when they were in the helicopter. For one thing, it hardly looked like they were moving at all. Then they go the same direction as the creature and fly over it! Was it REALLY that surprising when the creature hit the helicopter? They survived the crash (luck) and then Hud looks up and Shazam!! The creature just happened to be right there. (Bad Luck) I know they were hurt, but why did they stop running? These people went through hell and back, lost friends and family members, got attacked by small & large creatures, & survived a helicopter crash and they couldn't let them live? Had those two survived, I would have forgiven everything else. What was the sense of having the Going Away party? I'm mad that I stayed up late to watch the movie!
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
I get it...
With this movie, people either really loved it or really hated it and I get both. Lets face it, most horror movies start out with a group of young people who usually end up getting picked off one by one- sometimes 2 at a time. Maybe there are 5 of them- maybe 2. For the most part, even Saw had younger people- even though they were killed in different ways. But there aren't many horror movies where the stars are middle aged people. Also- these young people are normally the athlete, the quiet one, the spacey one- usually on some kind of drugs, and a number of other clichés.
My point is that the beginning of this movie is like every other horror movie you've seen. Then it changes... If you like out of the box thinking- and Joss Whedon- you'll like this. I didn't like it right after I watched it- but then after I thought about it and realized just how clever it was- I liked it a lot.
