Evotion from a shirt collar!
22 January 2007
An ironic take on the origins of humanity, filled with humor.

An entertaining visual metamorphosis starting from the Big bang to every stage of biological evolution from the earliest forms of marine life, to dinosaurs, mammals and dogs to the eventual creation of Homo sapiens, all springing fort from a shirt collar.

I truly love this film. The first time I saw it I was taken aback by the beauty of the 3000 illustrations in the film, which were all achieved in India ink and a Windsor Newton series 7 brush! Well timed, excellent use of the frame, with stunning drawings, Claude Cloutier is truly a master illustrator.

A must have for all film animation enthusiasts.

where did this short come from!!
20 July 2006
Wow. I saw this short right before seeing Jan Svankmajer's new film 'Lunacy'. And they were both probably the best films I've in the entire festival, maybe the best films I've seen all year. I've have no idea where this film came from or how it started out, but it rocks, I hope there's more where this came from! I guess it could be classified as an art house comedy, similar to something like napoleon dynamite with animation that looks like something Daniel Clowes would draw up. But seriously, this short is very smart and funny, and it looks like it was a lot of fun to make in the process. The mundane has never been so interesting.

the art house horror film of the year!!
20 July 2006
I just saw this film at the Montreal fantasia film festival. And this being Svankmajer's most recent film, I jumped for tickets. Absolutely amazing. Something of a political comment, the film show's us to ways of running an insane asylum. I have always loved Jan Svankmajer for his use of macabre animation (using raw meat, bones and eye balls). And it's use in context with 'Lunacy' is chilling. Truly one of the best horror films I've see all year. It's not the sort of horror that is entertaining to watch or bring your girlfriend. But if you love films and your looking for a horror film that will keep you thinking...then find a way to see this film.

fairy tale for adults
17 July 2006
Blood tea and red string. Stopmotion animation is hard to come by these days. what's even harder to come by is a dark fairy tale told using stop motion. luckily we have blood tea and red string. Which does just that. I was lucky enough to see this film at Montreal's Fantasia Festival. A great festival, but one that could always use more animation. Stylisticly Blood tea could be compared to Jan Svankmajer's Alice. But it has some very dark and somewhat scary points. It could easily give any kid nightmares. Chistiane Cegavske is a very gifted animator and the world she creates is a memorable tale of aristocratic white mice, skull flowers, widow spiders, blood, tea and red string.

Horror/Comedy at its best
10 July 2006
This movie is so much fun. Superbly acted, Nathan Baesel who plays Leslie Vernon is amazing. I saw this film at Fantasia Festival for its North American premier, and it blew my expectations away. Very few directors can get away with making a low budget film that incorporates horror and comedy all the while being something of a mocumentary. But this films gets away with all of them. Touching on areas of nostalgic horror which anyone could appreciate. I can't wait for it's DVD release, which is said to have a lot more bloody extras. I recommend this film to all fans of the horror genre who love a little comedy mixed in.

superman returns; faithful to it's predecssors
29 June 2006
Being a huge superman fan for the most part of my life, i've read most of the comics and seen all the movies and TV. series. But you don't have to be a big superman fan to enjoy this movie. Superman Returns dosen't waste any time recaping the origin story we all already know. It basically picks up where superman II left off, but you'll have no problem following the storyline. My only complaints, are that it is a little too similar (both in style and storyline) to the older superman films. I did enjoy the shots were superman is in space, they were incredible (similar to some of the superman artwork of Alex Ross). I think it will be a very successful family film. 7/10
