Hate Crime (2012)
Too much..
First of all IMDb rejects reviews that don't follow community guidelines, so I'm gonna have to hold out on going into detail over the scenes. Secondly, I won't be talking about the acting, my thoughts are on the content alone. This review will be unpopular because everyone here seems to be pretty good at stomaching a lot. To be honest I believed I was too until I was this film. Shotty acting or no, this it the most remorseless depraved thing I have ever seen and believe me I'm huge into the lost footage genre. I sat through all three August Underground movies, Megan is Missing, Zero Day, the Poughkeepsie Tapes, etc. And while they all disturbed me, none hit this hard.
I can't say what happens because if I describe a single scene, this review will be flagged and deleted. But we're seeing these unspeakable things happen to a mother, a father, and three children. An innocent family celebrating a young boys birthday. And then let me be as vague as possible. Three men break in and proceed to "have date night" with the kids' mom and go on to force him (A TEN YEAR OLD) to "partake" as well.. On his birthday... Here's where I'm going to come off as soft. Who would ever think of something so horrid? Oh and fiction or not, DON"T INVOLVE CHILDREN. Those child actors were literally assaulted in this film which wasn't fake. They're gonna be traumatized for the rest of their lives like other child actors who grow up and share their regret about making films like this. When I say child actors in this film are assaulted, I mean there are violent sexually explicit scenes where a ten year old actor is at least present in the room. Don't involve kids, end of story.
One scene that really bothered me was where after the father having seen his whole family violated in every way imaginable (including seeing his youngest child being put where you put cookies or a turkey) he gains the advantage momentarily and has a knife to one of the neo-Nazis' throats and you can just see and hear in his voice how traumatized and broken he is. Crying that he'll let the guy go if they just let him "see his little girl again" while the sick f's just scream what they're gonna do to her. A few seconds later they kill the dad. And these guys take one more hit of meth and head away Scott free. No justice for this family, nothing. We see in a caption at the end that the two guys were found, because they dropped the camera and someone found and reported it. They went to jail with life sentences. How is that not death? Even more depressing for you is a sad reminder of the American judicial system. Things like this happen, and the most horrible people get away. The girl was the only survivor in the family. It's captioned at the end how she was found in one of their basements, further violated, and is "currently adjusting to life without her family". That's just upsetting, like why did the movie above all else, need to add that?
At the end of the day, this movie violated every moral in and outside of the realm of fiction. It was supposedly created as some sort of PSA showing the severity of hate crimes. That's what they say, but I say this director is just a sick person with a sick mind. What we have here is something that was created to repulse and sadden the audience by showing them legitimately the worst thing that could ever happen to someone. I know it's just a movie and I know I sound like a.. "cat", but this was just too much. I don't know how there are people saying they enjoyed this. It was just torture p*rn. Anyone who enjoyed this needs therapy, because that's not something any rational person would want to see. As for those who stomached it.. Well you're stronger than I. Like I said I've made it through some bad ones, and I thought I could handle this stuff, but this one really got to me. Once I'm finished writing this I never wanna think about it again. This director has a history of breaking the moral fabric, and he seriously needs a legal ban from filmmaking. I could forgive a lot of this if it didn't involve three kids. This broke laws in real life, and as I'm sure you can tell by this long rant of a review, I'm angry and upset. I hope the director ends up in jail. This was everything that is horrible. And a ten year old was subjected to it. This was not okay dude. 0/10 Way too far..
I went into more detail here than I'd planned to. If this is flagged and removed I'll clean it up as much as I can.
Instant Cash (2011)
Come Back!!!
It's been a crappy couple years for I think it's safe to say, most of the population. Another season of these 20 minute segments of excitement and happy people would be a saving grace at this point. This was such a good show. I don't know why it ended so early.
Your Day (2017)
Tragic, Beautiful, Depressing, Heartfelt, Evil, Romantic, No One Word Can Do a Justice
Okay, wow. First of all, I didn't gather that she was sick until I read reviews and comments where people mention it. She didn't look sick to me. It's never acknowledged that she was sick. And for all we know, maybe she wasn't sick. Maybe just suicidal. Maybe this is meant to be a futuristic dystopian depiction where suicide is accepted, and hence there are laws permitting it. But this was still assisted suicide. I don't even know whether to commend or hate her husband for encouraging this. And then weird camera dude standing there emotionless and unphased. Like I'm gonna be honest, this was some of the most depressing stuff I've ever seen. The melancholy by the end is uncanny. I'm not one to be triggered by things I see on the internet (usually I'm the one triggering people tbh), and while this took me by surprise, I do have to admire the pensive acting and emotion that went into this. Aside from desponding, this was actually quite beautiful, but I just can't find it in myself to condone it. Saddening, tragic, depraved, evil, beautiful, I can't put a word on this, I just know in my core this was really really wrong, but objectively I still have to give it credit. I mean I'm not really one to judge this stuff. The movie Titanic took something tragic and saddening, and profited off of making it a very beautiful story. Still though there has to be a line. Ugh my head is spinning, I think I just need to process this. This was very wrong, but in a really messed up way, it's the best Omeleto video I've ever seen. In a sense of depth and emotion, I'd compare this to the aforementioned Titanic which is the third highest grossing film in history. There are just too many factors to weigh in here.
Taken (2008)
Love Neeson, Hate Grace
God I love this movie. I mean nobody but Liam Neeson could've pulled that off. But, Maggie Grace's character makes me also kinda hate it. I mean we're rooting the whole time for Neeson to save Grace, a spoiled rich girl with a giant house, rich parents, maids, chauffeurs, and birthday parties with tables stacked with presents and pony rides. But then her dad says he's not sure if she should go to Paris, because it's dangerous, and little rich girl throws a damn tantrum. I mean I wanna respect the concept of the movie, with Neeson saving his daughter, but I can't. Again, great movie. Liam Neeson is astounding, but I wish I could watch it and not be rooting for the human traffickers to get to keep his spoiled brat..
Child's Play (2019)
You can't just throw Aubrey Plaza and Mark Hamill at us, and call it a day
As much respect as I have for the original franchise, I can't be as subjectively generous as I might like to be. Seeing Mark Hamill back in action was quite pleasing. Growing up, I don't think any of us saw Luke Skywalker becoming Chucky. At the same time, the gorgeous Aubrey Plaza was very pleasing to the eye. Having said that, as far as the plot goes, they could've done way better. Like the original, I was expecting Chucky to be a possessed doll, housing the soul of a blood thirsty serial killer, but instead they decided to take it entirely off the rails in a new direction, and make him fully A.I.
The movie was sort of cutsie at first. A few jokes here and there, until Chucky basically sees a horror movie, and gets jealous of anyone who tries to separate him and Andy. So he essentially got his killer instinct from watching a movie..
All in all I enjoyed the beginning of the movie, but as it progressed, I was sort of building an expectation for the plot to become a bit more clever, but then the movie just pretty much ended. It was quite short. 6/10 all in all. It wasn't horrible, but it didn't blow anyone's hair back either. Good casting choice, but as far as plot goes, they could've done a little better putting pen to paper.
The Orville: Identity, Part II (2019)
And I Thought Last Weeks Episode was the Best...
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my godddddd!! BEST EPISODE BY FAR. I knew Issac wasn't bad.. I think we all did. Him pulling that return of the Jedi to save Ty was the best moment in the series by far. God, I'm shaking after having seen that. It's also pretty sweet how the Krill are practically on the Union's side now, or at least earths.
A lot is revealed about Issac and the rest of the Kaylon, and it is shown that he as well as the rest of his species do in fact possess a consciousness, and are blood thirsty given their enslaven past, while Issac was constructed after such events and therefore, more sympathetic (his time around biological life, aiding this as well..
The one and only thing I found wrong with this episode was where it was revealed that like the rest of the Kaylon, Issac has guns in his head as well, and I can't help wonder why in past confrontations requiring weapons, why Issac wouldn't have used them. I suppose it's possible he and the Kaylon didn't want anyone else to know there were essentially walking turrets, as it might have hinted towards their quest for warfare. Nonetheless, I feel Issac could very well have used them on that cannibal planet while he was protecting Ty and Marcus.
Again, best episode by far. I came on here right after I finished, because I just had to (in the words of Syndrome, from the Incredibles), geek out about it. I'm really not that big of a si-fi guy, but the Orville will forever have a place in my heart. Gold star MacFarlane...
The Orville: Deflectors (2019)
I Really Hate Klyden...
All I really have to say, is that my general dislike for Bortuses mate, Klyden has grown to the point of me despising him. A contemptible morally devoid character.. At the same time I must take my hat off to the heart wrenching storyline, not only behind this one episode, but to the entire series. I think the series is gunning towards making us loathe Klyden, and I think a lot of us really want to see him dead for the selfish things he has done, and I love how at the end, we see the anger in Bortuses eyes, when Klyden walks in.
Alien Surveillance (2018)
Nope
Probably the laziest, eventless, cheapest piece of garbage I've ever had the displeasure of wasting an hour and a half on. The aliens were just people in costumes. No special effects what so ever. First hour, absolutely nothing happens. If I could rate this 0 stars I would, as 1 is generous. Do NOT waste your time on this. You will be disappointed, I promise you.
VERY Disappointed. I honestly don't know how I even sat through the whole thing. But, you know.. You get half way through a movie, you kinda have to finish it.. 0/10
The Orville: A Happy Refrain (2019)
The Best Kind of Awkward
A fantastic episode indeed. The tension we've witnessed between Dr. Finn and Isaac, is finally cut when Claire confesses her crush on Isaac, at first to Kelly, and then to Isaac himself, asking him out on a date. This poses obvious problems, as Isaac of course is a machine, and cannot express or feel emotions of any kind, and as we find out, only sees the scenario as an experiment in human peer bonding, Isaac conducts in contribution to his ongoing curiosity, concerning the human race.
The first date does not go well, as Isaac is vastly over prepared, and seems to know everything about Claire, as he had previously downloaded all virtual data on her, leaving nothing to the imagination (so to speak, in Isaac's case).
After a conversation with John and Gordon, Isaac takes on a new tactic, going so far as to alter his appearance to be virtually human, and deleting all files on Claire, to impose a little spontaneity. This works, as Dr. Finn is charmed, and the evening ends in a sexual encounter between the two.
The following morning, a few things are revealed. Isaac concludes his experiment, and expresses immediate interest in terminating his relationship with Dr. Finn. Whilst it is revealed that Claire has fallen in love with Isaac, only to have her heart broken soon later, as Isaac, following John's earlier advice, takes measures to appear sloppy and abusive, so as to not hurt Claire in dumping her, but getting her to do it for him. This fails, and she is indeed hurt, but the relationship is terminated, and Isaac is satisfied, and unaffected with this outcome.
The following day, the crew express anger and contempt towards Isaac for his mistreatment of Claire, and Isaac does not appear to understand why everyone hates him. It is soon after revealed that the termination of the relationship did indeed have some effect on Isaac, as he makes a mistake in one of his unrelated calculations, which being an A.I. is highly unusual, given his uncanny intelligence. This causes Isaac to realize that without Claire, his system fails to process normally, and that he does indeed require her to be a part of his life.
The episode ends with Isaac simulating rainfall, drenching the crew in the process, to appeal to Claire, who has expressed her love for the rain in the past. This causes Claire to forgive him, and in the closing scene, we see Claire, and Isaac, entering the simulated restaurant setting from their first date, Isaac again altered to a human form..
A spectacular episode. Probably even the best in the entire series, if not, close to. The romance between Claire and Isaac, is fascinating, awkward, and cute all at once, and the love between human and machine is definitely a rarity. The only problem I had in this (not to sound heartless), is that the actor who portrays Dr. Finn is quite old (late 50's) and really not very attractive, in my opinion anyways. And seeing Penny Jerald and Mark Jackson (the actors who portray Claire and Isaac), in such an intimate presentation towards each other, takes a bit of the satisfaction out of the encounter, as Mark Jackson is much younger.
9/10 rating. Keep it up, MacFarlane!
Black Mirror: Fifteen Million Merits (2011)
Masterfully Depressing
Like all Black Mirror episodes, this one gives us a look into our possible futures, and certainly casts the spotlight over the more subjectively negative outcomes. In this, we see a world, in an energy crisis, and everything is powered by exorcise bikes the vast majority of people, is tasked with operating in exchange for "merits", the currency in this timeline.
Bing, your average work a day bloke, meets Abi, an aspiring singer, and appears to take on an immediate admiration towards her, as well as develops a romantic interest. Bing, aware of her talents, offers to sacrifice almost all of his merits to get her on a popular reality show (much like America's Got Talent), called "Hot Shot", to which she reluctantly, but gratefully agrees, to very soon after step into the spotlight, and show the world her talents, which she does with shining colors.
Upon hearing her performance, the judges briefly express their admiration towards Abi's performance, but dismiss it for her stunning looks, and explain that the only way she will achieve her dreams, and no longer have to pedal a bike, is if she begins doing pornography.
Bing, upset with this outcome, begins doing overtime, eventually acquiring enough merits, to enter onto the show himself, only to confront the same judges about the foul deed they had done, only to be met with contempt towards his message, but admiration towards his outspoken candor, and offer him a career in speaking out professionally in the same manor, and meeting a similar fate, as Abi..
My overall opinion on this episode is that the acting was brilliant, and the sheer brutality and shamelessness of this future society was depicted in a realistic, and very depressing manor. It certainly relays the idea that this is indeed a very possible future outcome.
As for how we're left feeling towards the outcome of Bing and Abi, it is saddening to say the least, as they are both sold short of their potential, in exchange for a more glamorous lifestyle, all the while, nothing being (in Bing's words) "Real". And its not. Potential, and love washed away by a presentation that presents itself as the only way out of their enslaven working day lives.
Was not fond of the final outcome all in all. Very saddening, disheartening ending, but an amazing performance by the cast to say the least. Terrible climax, done with a masterful performance. If I were to rate it only based on the tear jerking ending, I'd give 1 star, but the performance, and thought process behind the episode, it just deserves so much more than that. But I'd happily award a full 10 stars, for a happier ending.
A display of conformance at its finest. Depressing but honest..
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015)
Cliché all the way...
Since the first installment of the PA franchise, the writers of the movies seem to be instead of trying to pull their heads out of their asses, pushing them further in. I loved the first one. Had me on the edge of my seat, and for the found footage genre, was very realistic (as any movie in the FF genre should come across as).The second not bad. But, from the third on, I don't even know why I kept watching. Each movie seems to be abusing one basic story line. Couple gets haunted, couple is stupid enough to stay in house, alone most of the time, doing nothing but filming it. And of course, couple dies at the end. Has done the same thing since #3. What these movies lack in originality, they seem to make no effort to make up for it with at least some half decent jump scares, all of which when attempted, we saw coming from a mile away. I thought to myself (same as I do before I watch all of them for the first time), okay maybe the writers got it together, and this one won't be so disappointing like the other ones, but I sit through the whole thing and feel like I should call the producers to refund my wasted hour and a half. I heard this was supposed to be the final one in the trilogy, and expected that at least maybe they'd change it up a little, and maybe make it so they live at the end, and defeat "Toby", and whatever other ghosts. Or maybe find out a little background on them, because in all the movies we get next to no hints as to wtf they even want, who tf "Toby" is, or what he has to do with anything. Very disappointed in this movie. Wouldn't recommend it to those who haven't seen it (would probably even try to convince them not to), because I'm telling you, it's a giant middle finger, and nothing more...
The Island (2005)
The Names??
An excellent movie. Vastly underrated. A lot of action movies dedicate the plot to hot women and big guns. This movie was not like that. It had the perfect combination of Drama, Action, and Romance (and even as a guy, I can appreciate it when it's not blown out of proportion, like in CF's). However, I'm a little confused about the names of the clones in the movie. We find out that the final titles in their names mean how old they are (Echo:3 Delta:4; etc.) And, the first titles we later figure out are the last names of their sponsors (people who had them made). But we are never told what the numbers in the middle mean (or maybe I missed it). Lincoln "6" Echo, Jordan "2" Delta..? I think it means what number they are in their generation off the assembly line (so to speak), but I'm not sure. Anyone have any ideas??
Limitless (2015)
Excellent show!
I am a huge fan of the movie, and the first episode of the show blew me away. The appearance of Bradley Cooper, made me ecstatic, and the actor choice for Brian was perfect!Limitless entertains the idea that we're in the midst of major medical breakthrough's and watching this show, is like a real life preview for what comes. I love Jennifer Carpenter. I mean to me she'll always be Debra Morgan, but I can get used to this. All in all, this is an awesome TV series. I'm just about to watch the second episode, and am very excited. I would definitely recommend the series to those who aren't already sure they want to watch it (just give it a chance), and if you haven't seen the movie, I'd suggest watching it first. It, like the show is awesome.
