Raincoat (2004)
Oh my god! Definitely a MUST-NOT watch!
This movie seemed promising: Ajay Devgan, Aishwarya Ray, unhappy Lovestory....but this movie is plain boring. The camera is stable, the settings are...well, they fit the story, which is not a compliment... there are no songs, not even music most of the time. The actors only talk and nothing really happens. The plot is not to bad, since its inspired by a famous story by O'Henry. And since I wanted to know, how it ends, I even stayed on all through these really, really long 2 hrs. It was so depressing! The only good thing is, that it is so short. If you think now, that I don't know what a good movie is made off, there are movies like this, which i really liked, "Telephone" with Whoopi Goldberg is definitely one of them. But this movie is only watchable for fans of Art-house and maybe fans of French Cinema, because it is a lot like that. So if you are neither, stay away!
Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (2002)
Beautiful and Moving
This is a very, very beautiful movie which will move fans of heartbraking stories. I admit, that it is a little far-fetched at times, but that's what makes it so good. It wouldn't be interesting to have a story about a loving couple without anything happening. This is clearly a movie for lovers of romance-novels. One misunderstanding after the other, people who dearly love each other but can't tell what moves them, Shahrukh Khan, in short, everything that a good romance needs. I didn't award 10 stars because of the sets which are so totally ugly and the songs which are besides one(HTHS) worse than average and the dancing choreography which is not at all nice to look at. And, although Madhuri's acting was very good, she does, in my opinion, not stand out from the other actresses. Apart from that, this is a movie that most romance fans will totally enjoy!
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
Absolutely gorgeous
This movie is one of my alltime favourites! The plot although not new is perfect, which is probably why it has been used so many times. Raj and Simran fall in love while touring through Europe and when they get home, Simran is supposed to be married off to India. What I love so much about Bollywood, is all in here. First of all, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol are the perfect couple. They interact so well, everything fits. Second, The music is so great, I played the DVD a week or so until I got the CD. Third, we first see the cultural environment of London and Europe, which is contrasted very nice against India with all the fantastic colourful clothing. Fourth nice story components and Dialugues. The only reason for me not to give full 10 stars, is because off the dreadful late 80ies clothes (obviously the 80ties in India lastet deep into the nineties and because I want to spare a star for Khabi Khushi Khabi Gham, which is in my opinion still the best Hindi movie ever.
Paheli (2005)
very good
This review might include a spoiler, although I will try not to write anything beneath my opinion, that has not been said in the film description. I have just seen Paheli and I think it was very good. The movie is set in a time in India, where girls weren't ask whether they wanted to marry or not. They were not allowed to make any decisions on their own. Lachchi's goodlooking, but mind-weak husband leaves her after one night because his father wants him to. Lachchi is facing 5 years of loneliness. The only possible man she can have, without anyone suspecting anything, is of course a ghost that can take the form of her husband. This Lovestory is very moving and well-made. The songs are OK. SRK and Rani are a very good pair, and the much-discussed Mouch of SRK doesn't hurt as much as we thought. Also the ghost is up to some mischief which is very funny.
A must see in my opinion!
Maya Memsaab (1993)
Boring
Maya is a woman without any interests. She just dreams her life away and wonders, why she does not feel fulfilled. This could be an interesting topic. That would need a good story, a nice setting and good dialogues. It doesn't have any of these. This movie is totally boring. There are only lengths and no climaxes. The only climax is Shahrukh Khan. But although I am a huge fan of his, I couldn't stand this movie. Even he can't make this movie exiting. The movie is not as bad as "King Uncle" and if you're an Art-house fan or like it slow, you might maybe like it. It's not funny, it's not interesting, it's not catching. My recommendation: Don't watch it.
Chaahat (1996)
Not that bad and not that good
Chahat is a movie about an obsessed rich woman who wants to make Roop (Shah Rukh Khan) her own, but he loves someone else. The rich girl's brother will do anything for her and tries to secure her happiness with criminal methods. The idea is not too bad. SRK is not the actor he is now, but his performance is still worth seeing(especially for fans). Although the theme is good and the plot too, the movie is not able to catch the viewer. I think this is because of the Dialogues and settings.
I would probably describe it as a typical 80ies Movie. Due to design, story and acting.
If you are a fan of Sharukh, it's not a mistake to watch it. I would not buy it though.
King Uncle (1993)
Total Crap
I normally don't use such harsh words. But this movie doesn't deserve any better. I don't know, who would watch and like this. 1. To put Sharukh Khan on the cover to sell this movie is totally misleading! He appears only in the beginning and end and that's why the movie gets any points at all. 2. The other Characters, the bad Uncle etc. are played badly! This movie tries to be funny but is just ridiculous, its just too much parody. 3. Although the theme can be quite charming (stone-hearted person is convinced, that love is a beautiful thing by an orphan he has accidentally taken in is house) this movie offers no charm at all! If you are 10 years old, you might enjoy it, but else: hands off!! The scenes with SRK are not worth the money and the time!
