Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie (2017)
Amazing and Beautiful, Excellent Closure
I have to take a point off because there were a few things that could've been a little better or just seemed off- mainly some of the voices, problems with the animation in spots, the eye effect that made Arnold look like he was licking a toad, and the ending feeling rushed. But man, for longtime fans of the show this movie was an incredible treat and it was well worth the wait. I absolutely loved it. It was basically everything we've asked for. So many great twists, the scenes with Arnold in the jail cell looking at the picture of his parents, Brainy rescuing Helga's locket, Arnold seeing his parents, him and the green eyes crying after it's revealed the gold heart fell down the cliff, the reunion with his parents, Arnold and Helga's kiss, and the end when he sees his parents downstairs and then they walk with him to school. It was just so well done and heart wrenching. I had to stop myself from crying, and I know many watching did. I love how the last part threw us for a loop too thinking it may have just been all been a dream. it was the closure we needed. Craig Bartlett has simply done incredible work.
Power Rangers (2017)
Should've been more about Power Rangers
It wasn't a bad movie. I liked the whole backstory they created with Zordon and Rita and this movie had interesting interpretations of them. I think keeping Rita closer to the way she was on the TV show would've worked also rather than this version who was much more sinister and out to kill, but this version of Rita did work pretty well for the movie. The ranger actors were all great, and I liked that they were given more dimension than they were on the show. I liked too how they showed them becoming friends and learning to work together, when in the show they're one-dimensional and they kind of just come together out of nowhere just because they were chosen to be rangers. I do think Billy should've been more like how he was on the show though, I didn't get enough of a nerd vibe from this movie's version. Alpha 5 had a few funny lines, but I don't think Bill Hader's voice worked for him.
My biggest issue with the movie is that it was too much about the civilian teens and there wasn't enough Power Rangers action. Far too much of the movie is about the rangers as civilians, and they only morph an hour and a half into the movie. There should have been some battles against some of the show's classic monsters leading up to the big one against Goldar and Rita. Instead they go right to big battle, and even that it doesn't last long enough. They go from struggling to control the Megazord to destroying Goldar and sending Rita into space. Overall I will say it's a decent movie, but it needed to have more... Power Rangers in it. It should've been a little closer to the show, should've had more morphed action. The Power Rangers loving kid in me is pretty disappointed, but it was a good enough effort to turn the franchise into a big budget superhero movie with more character depth set in today's world.
