Rebirth (I) (2016)
8/10
Just saw it at Tribeca...

I went into this off a two-sentence description in a film fest pamphlet shrugging 'why not?' For what I got, I was pretty impressed. The lead actor gives a performance that's just the right amount of real discomfort, balancing between funny and unnerving, much like the tone of the movie itself. I was constantly bouncing between chuckling nervously and clasping my hand over my mouth out of fear. The music was tense and enjoyable, although one scene literally had to be an homage to Birdman. It's a long tracking shot following our lead through a tight hallway punctuated by heavy, tinny drums. It was nice seeing a story that, in a one-sentence description, I'd seen a few times played out through an indie filter, with almost no actors I recognized and with some nice, down-to-earth, cheap(ish) ingenuity. I enjoyed it. Although, the third act suffers from an anticlimax that kinda lessens the experience. Overall though, 8/10.
