Primal: Echoes of Eternity (2022)
Season 2 goes out not with a bang but a whimper
Season 1 was one of the best shows on TV but season 2 has only shown that Genndy, as much as I love him, struggles with narrative focused storytelling. The finale is too reminiscent of Samurai Jack Season 5 and its rushed nature. Everything is just sped through and the big confrontation ends hilariously quick. I don't know what it is about Genndy but the writing seems to really dip when it all has to lead somewhere. Most of this season has been spent having Spear and Mira smile at each other and random contrived drama that forces them all to fight for survival. It all just feels white noise and very uninspired storytelling.
It's just left a sour taste in my mouth.
Every Frame a Pause (2018)
Entertaining podcast
I've switched through some podcasts trying to find one that deals with things that are very much in my interest and after slowly making my way through Youtubers I found my way to this one.
It has sort of spoiled other podcasts for me because of the structure as well as the length. It is essentially on average the length of a few podcasts. It's hilarious, entertaining, informative and creates intriguing discussions about media and films.
It's a little meandering as the hosts can sometimes get side tracked and this makes the structure of it pretty much all over the place. This isn't something that bothers me personally but I can see how many can see it as an issue.
So many memorable moments from this podcast that create talking points of their own. It is the only podcast I managed to go through all the backlog and eventually catch up with when it reached in the 50-ish episodes.
Long may this podcast continue!
BoJack Horseman (2014)
The Best Netflix has to offer
I have never been rewarded more for sticking through the early episodes of a show than I have with BoJack.
Sometimes it seems premature to call something the best there is if it hasn't been around long enough but after 3 stellar seasons of the Netflix original BoJack Horseman, I can confidently say its not only the best show on Netflix, but arguably the best on TV right now.
There are a lot of great shows out there, and to each their own, but I find it hard to believe there is a show that blends humor, heavy topics, controversial topics, tragedy and depression as well as BoJack does.
If you are one of the many people that were put off by the first few episodes or your friends said they "couldn't get into it" after the first few episodes, I strongly encourage you to give it a second go.
Without going into too much detail or spoilers, the tone of the show changes drastically towards the later half of season one, and it is in season two and three that the show truly comes into its own.
I have never written a review on IMDb, but I could not resist doing so for this show. Despite how terrible a person BoJack is, I find myself empathizing and in a way rooting for him. From a first glance, you would laugh yourself silly if someone told you the most relatable character on TV was a talking horse played by Will Arnett, yet he is.
You will laugh from start to ending, you will cry and maybe even become a little depressed, question your own morals but throughout all this, you will fall in love with this show.
Primal (2019)
Honestly? Wow.
Genndy Tartakovsky created not only the coolest television show in history in Samurai Jack, but also one of my favourite shows of all time. I was never not going to give this a try and I watched it instantly on the very same day I heard about it.
I have to say I'm completely in awe at Genndy's ability with visual storytelling. This show was probably the most satisfaction I have gotten out of watching any TV show this year. It was everything about what makes Genndy such a unique animator, director, writer and all that jazz.
This show was extremely satisfying in every way. It gave me nostalgic vibes of Samurai Jack, it was beautifully animated, it was raw as hell, it was moving and at times heartbreaking, it was unforgiving, bleak and violent and to top it all off, it had some absolutely insane action. That last episode dear lord, my jaw dropped.
Thank you for continuing to be such an uniquely proficient creative mind Genndy with absolute gems that you give us!
Stranger Things: Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt (2019)
A chaotic end
I have no idea whether it's something wrong with me or not but something hasn't quite clicked for me not only for this finale, but the entire season. The show looks brilliant, the sound track is ridiculously fitting and memorable but the story just seems...all over the place.
One of the things that made Stranger Things so great was the character dynamics as well as the unpredictable plot. It had you hooked from the beginning to the end. This season however, I can't recall a single thing that you can consider a plot twist or unpredictable. While this isn't something that is a definite negative in and of itself, for a show like this it is. This was however, not my only issue with the season as well as the finale.
Things are getting quite frankly, ridiculous. I can hardly ever feel invested in most of the action scenes because of how unbelievable they are. All the characters seem to have pretty thick plot armour.
Every movie and show has its own in-universe laws, rules and consistency. For example in Star Wars, even though we know people can lift objects with their mind, you can't chop off someone's head and they stay alive. This is my issue with this show and the finale. I can't recall just how many times our protagonists were in danger and they somehow escaped in the nick of time. Now you can do this once or twice every so often but when you do it so so many times during an episode it becomes hard to be invested.
I don't want to sound too negative as I love the show. El, Joyce and Steve are characters I absolutely adore and want them to just live normal and happy lives so when they are in danger I naturally worry and pray they don't get killed. The problem is when you abuse people's investment in characters by constantly putting them in danger and situations that they shouldn't survive but they somehow do seemingly every time, why would I worry?
The ending could have been great but the only thing that got me in the feels were some people saying goodbye, even though I know they'll probably be back together. I don't for one second believe in the death at the climax and them dying would be a bigger surprise than being alive.
Also I'm not crazy about this entire Russian plot, it's very cartoonish and not in a believable or fun way. I can't say I'm as excited for season 4 as I was for mainly 2 but also for 3.
BoJack Horseman: Free Churro (2018)
This show just keeps delivering
You'd think after 5 seasons I would expect greatness from BoJack Horseman but I'm still surprised and left in awe every season.
Season 5 was consistently brilliant but every season they have that one episode that can honestly be considered the best episode of TV that year. And every season they keep keep raising the stakes with inventive storytelling. It is safe to say Free Churro lives up to the show's incredibly high standards and then some. I was starting to wonder if they were going where they went and if I would get bored but next thing I knew the 25 minutes were up faster than I could imagine.
It is still fresh in my mind so harder to really analyze where this episode stands but it's easily in the very best episodes the show has made.
BoJack Horseman: Time's Arrow (2017)
I shouldn't be surprised yet I am.
A lot of other people already said it but God damn this shows keeps doing this. I never thought an episode would top Escape to L.A. but this episode did it.
If after over year you still haven't watched this show, do yourself a favor and lock yourself away for a weekend. One of the best episodes I have ever seen on TV and easily my favorite show on TV right now.
