Brigsby Bear (2017)
10/10
Absolutely blew me away
6 January 2018
I'm still teary from the last few minutes of the movie, did not think it would be this emotional.

Kyle Mooney is so incredibly subtle with his acting that if you haven't seen much of his previous work, I'm positive most of the parts I was laughing out loud at, you would probably be wondering what was so funny. He is a fantastic character actor and he really pulls off a new subtle character in James, which is kind of an amalgamation of his most well known characters from his Youtube skit days, perhaps a little more naive than normal.

There wasn't a weak actor in the entire film, but besides Mooney I would give special praise to Mark Hamill, although he only has a few scenes on camera, his presence is felt throughout the entire movie, through his voicing of Brigsby etc. I actually thought Hamill was better used here than in "The Last Jedi"..

I'm not much of a critic, I can't summarise exactly what I loved about the movie very well. I will say though that the movie is superbly bitter sweet, mostly sweet, endearing and charming. And of course, absolutely hilarious, but as above, you may need either repeat viewings or be an already established fan of Mooneys work.

Finally want to mention Dave McCary. Dave and Kyle are the perfect pairing. I absolutely loved their Youtube skits and even that amazing Instagram series they made (it's called the "D and K podcast", look it up). For his first feature length film, there is no way you would be able to tell. The movie is very well directed, I tend to pay attention to how a movie is shot, put together etc, but with this it was always characters first, which I think is a great strength.

This movie is inspirational. I can't wait to see what these guys come up with next.

My Girl (1991)
9/10
Spans a half a lifetime and does it with expert skill

Warning: Spoilers
I just watched this movie again for the first time in probably twenty years. This movie really had a pretty big impact on my childhood, and it's funny because I can't really remember where I saw it, but I know it probably wasn't more than once, it might have been at the movies...but it might have been once or twice on VHS. A big part of the mystique of this movie is that it was released in the early 90's, but seemingly set in the 70's, and it's done so well you wouldn't even notice.

I had the biggest crush on the girl at the time (Chlumsky), and I totally identified with the kid (Culkin), especially because I had a very close brush with death and almost died after having an anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting a year or two before. So this movie really spoke to me as a kid. I really felt like I was the kid in the movie.. which was a weird feeling.

Watching it now twenty years later and it's quite a different perspective that you get. I identify much more with Aykroyd and Curtis. I suppose that's only natural. But the issues the movie deals with are timeless, and it does it with a respectability and competence that you don't see very often.

The last twenty minutes of this movie will have crying pretty much constantly.

It's a beautiful movie, and it's very rare that a movie can elicit such emotions across such a time span.

The Last Man on Earth (2015–2018)
10/10
Brilliant, complex, intelligent comedy
4 May 2015
I couldn't help notice all the bad reviews and felt compelled to right this wrong. I'm guessing the bad reviews have ulterior motives.

This show is funny. Not just a bit funny, but actually funny. If you love shows like Curb your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, etc. then you're going to love this. If however you prefer sitcoms like "big bang theory" then please, leave now.

I rarely laugh out loud at a TV show but this one had me in stitches so many times! Comedy is about the removal of dignity and over the course of the series it's amazing they still find dignity left in the character of Phil Miller to remove. Just when you think he can't go any lower, he does.

Phil Miller is this unsympathetic bastard who just wants to get laid at the end of the world, and yet everything seems to be against him, including himself. In some respects he is well meaning, but he isn't the most well equipped person to survive the end of the world, preferring to use duct tape and string to solve engineering problems, but his heart is usually in the right place. Usually.

Oh, he also considers murdering someone so he can sleep with more women. But he doesn't go through with it, he's just not that guy in the end.

I'm purposely trying to avoid giving too much away here, because I'm assuming whoever is reading this has never seen the show, so do yourself a favor and go watch it now, you will not regret it!

A lot of great ideas but it falls flat
28 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Looking at this movie 35 years after it's release, it's very easy to see it's influence on movies made since, especially more recent (last ten years) horror, including movies like Insidious, paranormal activity etc.

There are so many great ideas in this movie, I particularly like the relationship the child has with the spirit, that only she can see, an idea that has been used countless times since. But I feel like it was never fully followed through, it almost seems like they didn't know how to end this movie, how to tie it all together.

The plot with the priest just fizzles out, the plot with the ghost on the child can see fizzles out, the idea that the husband is going to kill everyone fizzles out.. it just fizzles.

It's just such a shame considering the possibilities. I also think it's overly long, and quite boring in some parts. There are a few jump scares early on but nothing spectacular. I kept waiting for things to get scary but most parts just seemed comical, like when the lead actor saw a ghost head of himself hovering in the cavity behind the wall in the basement. It even had a cheesy bit of music to go with it.

I feel like maybe they were channeling some of the exorcist here with the priest plot lines, but it just didn't work.

In the end, it was a totally unsatisfying movie, with a really weak ending. Having said that, I have to give it kudos for inspiring the movie makers of today, and I think modern horror is so much better for the ones that went before.
