RK/RKAY (2021)
Magic realism that breaks the 4th wall
Huge fan of Rajat Kapoor. Incredible tales. This time he weaves magic realism in neo-noir while breaking the 4th wall - something of a first in a bollywood movie. For this brave attempt itself, it deserves a 9 star.
The movie combines mid-life crisis, existentialism and wry humor and packs it with some amazing performances by the caste. It reminded me of three movies - Lucia (Kannada) that fuses the real and the imaginary, Ulta-Pulta which is also directed by RK and has similar breathtaking turn of events and Andhadhun - for the kind of ending.
There will be times in the movie when the idea overpowers the script and it feels that the script is going nowhere, but in reality I realized that the characters were evolving and it was needed to bring out the existential dearth of the protagonist which I believe is the real motif of the movie.
Flames (2018)
Adorable, gem of a series.
Characters are adorable, the romance is cutest I've ever seen. Beautiful direction, honest and real emotions. Genuine social messages, never gets schmaltzy and yet touches and affects you deeply.
Gem of a series.
Hostages (2019)
Extremely underrated
Extremely underrated. It may not match the absolute brilliance of breaking bad or the grandiosity of sacred games, but as an original story I found it intelligent and entertaining without being overly dramatic. The script does not leave loose ends and the characters are believable (i'm looking at you, sacred games). The editing is generally crisp although the few episodes in mid-season do feel dragged. But it more than makes up for it with a startling (yet not outlandish) end to the season that strikes a balance between neat closure and curiosity for next season. Series is well supported by top notch acting by the entire cast.
Wish people appreciated this kind of storytelling more than a Mirzapur, which was really nothing more than gore and forced violence masquerading as entertainment without reason or logic, or a scared games, which starts off with much promise but degenerates into meaningless subplots that leaves too many loose ends and ultimately makes a mockery of the viewer's intelligence (and patience)
