When I was a small boy, I used to watch western movies. Both American and from Europe (Italy and Eastern Germany). At that time I was happy with the gunfights, and the necessarity in the good always wins scheme. When I became older, I completely ignored this genre. Every movies are the same, the complete neglection of the native culture and the tribes, the visibly fake houses, etc... I just didn't get it. Now, when I'm close to 50, I started watching Yellowstone, which is an absolute classic, the modern version of the wild west. When the series arrived to the point, when we got flashbacks from the old Dutton family, especially the scene with the indians, I started to hype myself to watch 1883, but basically I don't like these prequesl too much, most of these movies / series are pure cashgrab stuff. I came to the current end of Yellowstone, and immediatly started 1883.
When I heard the intro music, when I saw the brilliant old-style photos of the cast, I immediately thought, this is it!
I can't find the best words how I feel myself, after watching 1883 two times in a week (and obviously I will watch it over and over again several times). The setting is the infamous Oregon Trail, actually near the end of the era. I was shocked by the performance of every single actress/actor, But Isabel May was shining in this role, I could feel every breath, every smile and every tears of her, even the horrible pain she suffered. And the narration together with the brilliant music score was stunning. I immediately entered into this team of survival, just like I was one of them.
Tim McGraw was my second favorite, he perfectly picked up his role, as a tough farmer, ex-soldier, a father and husband.
All of the cast was great, but these two...
The road was long, and the story is slow paced, but believe me, it is worth every single minute to watch. I was laughing, I was crying a lot, 1883 deeply touched me, there is no other like this one.
Taylor Sheridan, and the whole team finally gave the native indians a great respect, by showing their way of life, their proudness, their recklessness as warriors, their love of nature, and their tragedy as they lost their lands. We saw the Wild West, as it really was.
When I saw some American movies, and there they mentioned the founding fathers of the cities, the big families, the old ones, etc, I didn't really know what could be that importance. Now after 1883 I get it. Those, who survived the Oregon Trail, developed a lifetime bond with the others and their children and future family too..
I sarted reading books about Wild West, I want to know everything, thanks to this amazing series.
Thank you for Mr. Sheridan, thank you for the whole team, thank you Isabel May.
Unfortunately I have to demote Yellowstone and Dark from my 10 pt ratings to 9, because I have the best classic now.
PS: I would like to see a prequel to 1883, where I could watch how James Dutton fought in the war, how he left the prison, what did he experience, and why he left Tennesse behind to start a new life. And what was Elsa Dutton like in 1882 :)
