Better Call Saul (2015–2022)
6/10
Mostly cringe-core, some great
29 March 2024
I feel like I was being generous with 6 stars. This show felt like an extended version of deleted scenes from Breaking Bad. The storyline that didn't involve Saul as much was excellent. Specifically Nacho became one of the best characters in the series from this.

Almost the entire show involving Saul was a cringe-core fest of bad things happening to a redeemable person with no payoff. I like the character Saul less than I did before watching. Most dramas have bad things happening but then they climax with some good or a point to all of it, but I found myself looking forward to the end of the series so I wouldn't have to watch anymore. Honestly if I could go back I would stop watching after the Nacho story climaxed, but its hard to stop watching a building burn down.

Mixed Feelings, Games of Thrones abrupt ending
8 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm just gonna say theres spoilers so dont read unless you want the big picture of why its good and bad in specific examples.

Summary: Absolutely everything redeemable, positive, and exciting was trashed in the final episodes. The last season left more plot holes than I've ever seen in my life. Every plot writteb in season 1 & 2 was later revealed to have happened and not happened simultaneously. It made absolutely no sense. Please fire whoever wrote the end

The good: -modern day Thor god vs giant cycle had so much potential -Magne's transformation from nerd to stud was satisfying but could have been better -in every season there were at least certain episodes the story was moving along well

The bad: -They started developing characters and more elements but then they wasted all potential and just completely forgot to keep going -They developed a Loki vs Thor dynamic, and then dropped the ball on Loki. Too much relationship garbage that never became anything bigger or purposeful -It felt like the show hit a writers strike or was suddenly cancelled or ran out of budget because the writing was very sloppy in parts of the 2nd and 3rd seasons -All character development was eventually thrown out the window so dont get excited about someone -I accidentally watched the finale before the penultimate episode and to say I was confused and disappointed is a huge understatement, but honestly I'm glad I ended on the 5th episode because the finale was so bad that it felt like a reel of cut scenes

The ugly: -the final fight was cheesy and underwhelming -they added in some special effects that were cool in the finale but literally set the entire story on fire and then piss on it while you watch.

Get past season 1
19 September 2023
Wow. I had low expectations because after the first few episodes in season 1 my friend got offended and bored by a reference to religion in the show and stopped watching. I continued to watch on my own but I'm already looking forward to starting over so I can absorb more the second time. The show starts off really overwhelming because the story spans too many characters and planets ... and I'll stay away from any possible spoilers. Suffer through the character arc because it pays off. I still thought season 1 was interesting but season 2 is much better than I was expecting. Very satisfying payoffs and character arcs. Not perfect.. but many incredibly strong actors with amazing performances. Last thing is I want to mention Day's incredible god-like swagger in the first season. Demerzel is incredible. Well done on the casting. I didn't read the books but the directors vision is one of the few captivating shows out there, all flaws aside.

Too hardcore for me
7 August 2023
I think many fans are oblivious to the insane amount of unnecessary nods towards star wars lore that create an overwhelming delay on any story progress. For me personally, there were good moments but it was far too slow moving and the main character became less and less interesting in each episode. I failed to finish the first episode a dozen times. When I finally forced myself to watch the series I wish I would have gone with my gut. The upside of this show is that its something you can leave on in the background while doing something else. Trust me, you didn't miss anything... The true peak of the show was the reveal of who was the actor behind the mask.

Beware of fake reviews
12 July 2023
If you want the best comparison of what this show is: its basically happening in real time just like the show "24". It is equal to 24 in that it is dramatic, has a cliffhanger every episode and if you look back it probably seems impossibly stupid, but in the moment its entertaining.

In summary, look at the review date and if it was written BEFORE July 11 2023, only 3 or less episodes were available: only 3 episodes have been released as of the writing of this review, and the 4th is released tonight. Some of the reviews were written when the 2nd episode had barely been released. Over 5600 reviews have been written/rated so based on that, I can guarantee you that the majority of reviews are written without even knowing the whole story.. in other words, they are impatient because either they are dying to see the next episode or because they have no life and their feelings are hurt that they can't binge watch the entire show. That being said:

The show has left enough unanswered questions that it is intriguing and the cliffhangers are good enough that we had the urge to binge watch another episode past midnight. The acting is fine for the most part but honestly dominated by Idris Elba. I can totally see this show going in ridiculous directions like the show 24, but that ridiculousn but cliffhanger entertaining model was wildly successful year and year.

As for now, the show is entertaining and has great cliffhangers. We're watching it while eating dinner the last 3 nights and we were lucky that the 4th episode came out the next night.

I will return to update this review when the full series has aired, but for now it is actually above average for this genre in quality, story, and acting. I think its worth watching but that could change because honestly as a viewer I don't know what else could possibly occupy the next few episodes.

Amazing but too Graphic
4 May 2023
There are many extremely entertaining episodes. Definitely the opposite of typical shows. You never know what you're going to get. Good for watching alone, but I decided to write a review after watching a particularly terrible episode.

The storyline I just last watched was trash and it seemed like it was an excuse for an artist to be as gory as possible at the expense of everything else. I ended up fast-forwarding through even after increasing the play speed.

I only gave 6/10 stars because many episodes are unsharable based on graphic content. Even if the story and originality is great, not being able to share it destroys the biggest enjoyment for me personally.

Amazing potential squandered
6 October 2022
The series starts off in an almost soap-opera-like series of emotional strings. Despite cheesy moments, the series has several themes that instantly hook you in. The love triangles were amazingly complex but then near the end of the series they completely drop all the ropes.

It was painful to watch the last 2 episodes due to some of the worst writing I have ever seen. It seemed like they suddenly ran out of budget or episodes and had to make a last second attempt to wrap up the season and introduce a new one.

The storyline was great and the pacing and actors were very likeable-at least until the end. They could have drawn out the story for another whole season. Honestly the season should have ended episode 17 or 18. Jin Mu is probably the worst part of the show. No logic or reason to how everyone plays so dumb. As a viewer you catch great story arcs very early but then they never come up again.

Hilarious bias in reviews based on political party. The rating war is as entertaining as the show. It seems to be extremely offensive to anti-vaxxers and friends.

Amazing source-material morphed to mediocrity
21 December 2021
Summary: there are good elements and enough to make it a decent show but I couldn't recommend it to other people because the writing is getting progressively worse as the series goes on. Characters are not believable, interesting, or likeable. Pretty much every one became less likeable in the 2nd season.

The series pacing seems extremely rushed but thats a writing problem. There aren't enough episodes to do the characters or story justice leading to odd leaps of bad character writing that ruin basic elements of the books.

Episodes MUST be longer or more numerous to compress the books this way and stand any chance. If Season 3 doesn't have more episodes or some major improvements on the length of runtime, this show is doomed. Mark my words. Better shows were cancelled for less. This is not good enough.

Slow and gimmicky
12 December 2021
I haven't finished yet but thats a symptom of the show being too slow and boring to want to finish. The first episode is supposed to hook you but I was counting down the minutes. Too overdramatized and stylistic. The fluff really pulls away from the character impact. Some people said they like the animation style but it didn't really impress on me in any way. Coming here to read reviews is giving me hope that it must get better but it seems like the reviews all say the same thing as if they were written by League of Legend fanatics.

Episode 4 Hooks You
28 November 2021
Most of my family has read the books and all of us are hooked. My only complaints are that there aren't enough episodes in each season. The secondary author Brandon Sanderson is consulting on the show so it hasn't strayed from the heart of the books.

Keep in mind a major feature of the books was cycling through the first person view of each character randomly to tell the story. Some people are nit-picking too much when certain scenes are told from other characters eyes. Really shallow point of view.

The emotional development of the characters is better than expected and well done. I got tears in my eyes a few times during the 4th episode just because of how epic it is seeing these characters fleshed out.

The only thing I'd caution people of is you might want to wait till Christmas eve so you can bingewatch all 8 episodes. This series can't come out soon enough!

Last comment is some have falsely claimed the show has inserted political messages but they either didn't read the books or didn't understand what they read in regard to what the book calls "pillow-friends" etc.

Must Watch
19 November 2021
I read the books. This is one of the best of ANY book adaptations to date. I can't think of a better one: they all either have bad acting, terrible script, terrible effects, or all of the above. The production, scenery, cast, effects (except the horrendously fake wolves), acting, and pacing is amazingly done-perfect setup so far.

The best parts haven't happened.. there's a lot of dead spots in the books and then a bunch of crazy stuff happens. Thats just the story. Only people complaining for really shallow reasons. My friend who hates fantasy enjoyed it all so far and I thought he'd give up 5 minutes in... i know how tedious the book details were.

Anyways, can someone explain to these people that adapting a book to live action is extremely hard and that this is one of the best ones so far?? Do these people not realize this might be literally the best out there so far?

Didn't Read the book
13 November 2021
Best adaptation for general public to date. Not overbearing and made me excited to watch the sequels. Not overly stylistic or bombastic as past attempts were.

My friend who read the book was able to fill in certain gaps; reading the synopsis, having a nerd friend, or overviewing the character factions might make the movie easier to enjoy. People who love the books might be annoyed at all the details they had to skip about factions.

Slowburn, immersive, with epic ambience; I was looking forward to the cinematography and details, the whole experience. Best with huge screen and surround sound.. if you hated Lord of the Rings, skip this.

At times it felt too slow paced. I kept checking my watch because I felt like it wasn't going to wrap up fast enough, but thats one of the strong points of the movie; the pacing although slow was even while giving just enough to satisfy.

I gave the high rating based on the difficulty of adapting this particular book to film but the amazing job done by the cast cannot be underappreciated. In the end, the actors gave believable likeable performances.

Bad Writing
27 January 2021
No amount of acting and effects can make up for terrible writing. Lets just say they set up certain things in the movie and then never use them. You're like, oh the beginning of the movie said this, but don't expect anything to happen because... bad writing.

It really peaks near the beginning, then really drags on. Theres a fight scene near the end that is endless, unbelievable, really repetitive. The climax is anticlimactic so....

There was potential for a good movie, and the actors did fine, but the characters didn't act like real people. It was so obvious what was going on but they dragged on every single story element and repeated it. I feel bad for these actors; Truly a waste of money and talent.

Part of the reason it was so bad is because it has an intellectual level of Spy Kids, super predictable and stereotypical moments but placed and set up so poorly that they have no emotional depth. It checks all the boxes except being interesting and having a good plot... you know... like missing the whole point of movies.

Slow-burn drama
10 January 2021
This movie feels more on the family drama side of things. That in itself should be enough for you to decide if its your cup of tea. Not a bad movie, just a less popular genre, and many come expecting some sort of thriller will be disappointed.

Some people might not like the pace of the story: more of a slow-burn drama or documentary speed flow. Topics of OSINT and social media overlords set in the near 'Black Mirror'-esque future. (I bet Black Mirror could do this entire movie better as an episode but alas).

As you can imagine, boiling Apple, Google, Facebook, and all existing and imagineable social tech into one hypothetical company causes the movie to take a lot of logical shortcuts. It's less detail/intellectual of a movie and more of a dystopian concept movie. I would not call this a thriller since the majority of the movie is about the drama of socializing through technology and coming-of-age drama.

There was only one moment where I didn't like how Emma Watson acted near the end; I must admit I watched this movie to see her performance. If you don't like her, she dominates the entire movie so that should be enough info to guess if you'll enjoy it. For me, overall entertaining movie that deserves 6.5-7 stars.

WARNING: Don't watch if prone to depression
2 January 2021
This movie may be triggering for some people. I wish I hadn't watched it due to the effect it had on me for days if not weeks after. I do not think this movie is worth watching based on the harm it may incur on a small number of people.

The kind of raw film you search for
8 September 2020
This film was brilliant. Realistic acting like this is only possible through the incredibly charged conflicts onset. The reason why this movie captures such a tragic element is due to the torture it was to get everyone to work together. Only comparable to the raw emotions of movies like The Shining and other classics that required an almost unethical amount of stress to create. Warning that this movie is emotionally disturbing in a violent sort of way which may not be tolerable by some viewers.

No previous knowledge
5 January 2020
**This is my perspective from someone who never played the games, read the books, or has any knowledge of anything related to the show.** I see too many reviews saying the show is or isn't for fans of the books/games/etc. Before watching the show I honestly thought it was a video game only and remember when I first heard it announced I was thinking.. 'a series based on a video game...? Never watching that..' but boy was I wrong. One of the best Netflix series yet.

It wasn't hard to catch onto the time skipping of the episodes especially not knowing anything else about the universe; i assure you from an outsider, it was done really well. For those complaining, this also allows them to come back and bring those stories they skipped in the future. Stop crying. The 3 main characters were VERY well cast and Geralt is award-winning good. I don't know if they match the books but they were enjoyable to watch.

I cannot wait for another season. Well done. The content is game of thrones level for sure, and the size of the universe also feels similar so I can understand the comparison. The orgy and nudity was over the top. Honestly not being able to share this show with a lot of people is annoying. Minus a star for that. (SorryNotSorry) Was all the nudity really necessary? That may sound childish but in that regard it felt like at points they were trying too hard to copy GoT feel.

Good up until....
24 October 2018
This is a great start to Bradley Coopers career, but it built up all this steam and then just fizzled out. Right where it finished, it should have shown Bradley Cooper getting a spark of inspiration because the last 20 minutes of the movie were just his realization, then next thing we know they're singing a duet. The last song in the movie sucked.

I wish I could unwatch this show specifically because it can be extremely triggering for people with certain experiences. I had to come back to this review to lower the rating to match other titles that were the same experience level. Don't watch if you want an uplifting experience.

Bad Writing, Bad Acting
21 October 2018
Worst Marvel product ever created. Even the TV shows are better. The whole show was predictable, dumbed-down, and not believable. The capstone of its stupidity was when they do a quick cameo to explain that he was setup in the very beginning. The villain acted terribly, step-dad was the worst, and absolutely everything involving the ants was canned.

Please take my advice and just read the synopsis and skip to the sequel that I pray is better than this trash.

Tom Hardy was a perfect choice
6 October 2018
This was an entertaining movie, and I'm giving it 10 stars just to counter the ignorant critics that don't understand how to really value a movie. This character is great, and I hope to see much more. I didn't like his girlfriend and there were a few weird parts, but the only thing that bothered me was how he ate the tater tots in a very unrealistic way. Yeah, not a spoiler. Honestly there was a fish tank part that bugged other people but it seemed fine to me.

Outsider Perspective
19 December 2017
I'm not particularly a manga or Japanese movie/tv fan and I didn't know the cartoon and movie existed. I might have to check them out.

From the perspective of someone who is watching this without any expectations and randomly found this on Netflix:

This show is absolutely amazing. Just bingewatched the first 6 episodes. The acting is brilliant, the characters are so amazing, and I'll admit I almost shed a tear in several episodes out of sheer glee. This reminds me of how I enjoyed the film Amelie; a pleasure to see all the unique nuances, especially after watching one of the most terrible films I have ever seen in my life a few days ago called Stasis.

I hope the rest of the season is as good but I could probably die happy after only 6 episodes. Thank you sincerely to those who made this with such endearing people. I want to hug you and them.

By the way, the show Haters Back Off needs more 1 star reviews. Please take the time to downvote terrible shows so I can experience more of this and less of that.

Haters Justified
1 December 2017
This is the worst Netlfix show I have ever seen. Not only would I ask you to never waste a second of your time on it, but I also would like Netflix to remove it immediately.

It is the worst written and bland show I have ever seen. There is absolutely nothing in the show worth commenting on. This show seems to be trying to channel Napoleon Dynamite. If someone recorded random people doing Napoleon Dynamite impressions, it would actually be better than this script and the terrible actors.

The absolute worst part is the uncle. He sucks the life out of anything that might have been redeemable. Its interesting to note that the awkward uncle bit is stolen straight from Napoleon Dynamite, except that he should die in a gratuitously violent long lasting death so we could feel proper resolution after the torture of watching him.

My only wish is that you write a review and send this trash to the pits of review hell. This does not deserve anything more than a single star. This is the "fake news" of Netflix shows.

My only regret is that I gave it a chance and watched more than a single episode. My only wish is that I could remove it from my watch history and also my brain via lobotomy.

The fact that someone was paid to write this, and that someone still produced the show after reading the script, and that anyone involved was paid at all is so depressing that I'm probably going to call a suicide hotline once I finish this review. Please never let these people create anything ever again. It is unconscionable.
