Houses with History (2021)
Good and bad
While I do appreciate what they are trying to do, I wish this team would seek a little more education about what historic preservation actually is. Please, someone show Jen how to design a historically sensitive kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room. Stop using big box products. No more recessed can lights. No more plastic switches and plate cover. No more bellacro lights. No more builders series hardware, hinges, etc. No more plastic windows.
With just a bit more experience or education or thoughtfulness on how to spend their budget, this team could be creating true masterpieces that should be preserved forever. Right now, at least in season one, it seems like a somewhat low end flipper show.
Restoring Charleston (2016)
Watch an idiot ruin historic structures
If you hate restoration and love watching a guy with more money than sense change things just for the sake of changing things, then this show is for you! There's very little restoration here, it's more DIY on the cheap. S1E1, I can't believe he's using those bargain basement chinese cabinets in the kitchen with the home depot backsplash and bellacor lighting. Raising the windows? Why?
The opening line alone, "most people would tear this house down" displays a complete lack of respect for these important historic places that are irreplaceable. A true historic preservationist would have no thoughts or discussion whatsoever about destruction or tear downs. Stand up for your "beliefs" and act like a true preservationist.
For the Love of Kitchens (2021)
Breath of fresh air
This show has been a long time coming. The design oriented television show lineup for the last couple of decades has been a sea of cheap painted particle board, while this show stands out like the timeless, crafted and quality craft that it is. There is no silly instagram girlie who wants to paint everything black. There is no Susie homemaker who wants everything trendy. And there is no cheapskate who will only purchase the low bid item or labor. FTLOK is a show about using quality and timeless pieces and people to create spaces that actually mean something. Spaces that will no be ripped out and sent to the land fill in a decade. Bravo for doing it right, staying out of the mass produced markets, and having a point of view. Love it and will watch more and more.
In with the Old (2021)
Old house destruction
It's a shame to watch something that's outlined as being sensitive to old houses and their history, yet the show is filled with trendy, wanna be influencers who destroy so many perfectly good original features of all of these places. Original beadboard, tile, plumbing fixtures, windows and more is all destined for the landfill so these hipsters can get the latest Chinese made trend they've seen on Instagram and purchased at HHome Depot. Painful to watch as you realize that most of these girls are eyeing a potential hosting gig with Magnilia Network who produced the show. You see them creating look and learn projects for no other reason than to play TV host. No husbands, partners, or other experts/consultants seem to be willing yo say anything to slow these girls down from their own, personal old house destruction. This is original fabric that cannot be returned. The hippest, greenest way to restore a house is to KEEP as many original fixtures, finishes, etc as possible.
