Only a pale shadow compared the the fantastic original!
24 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
NETFLIX's Avatar: The Last Airbender ist but a pale shadow in comparrison to the fantastic animated show of the early 2000s. They try to cram all the emotional moments of the entire animated show in season one on Netflix.

To make one big example: We all know the powefull episode "Tales from Ba Singh Se" in season three that finishes with the stunning 'Leaves From The Vine' moment where uncle Iroh's backstory is fianlly beeing revealed. For two seasons the viewer was made to beleave that Iroh is just a weird old fool but revealing the tragic death of his son during the first siege of Ba Singh Se is what tunred him from a tough general, a man of war, into a the wise mentor who had enough of fighting.

It were moments like this that made the original show great. It was a great display on how well written all these characters were.

In the Netflix show however, all these moments are all laid out for you and shoved right into your face. It is not a journy where the viewer discovers things. It feels more like a strawl through fields of member-berries: "MEMEBA IROH? MEMEBA HOW SAD HE WAS?" He does not even sing the song, instead it is just the melody from Leaves From The Vine played via orchestra in the backround.

All this makes the whole relveal so much less effective! Granted I shed a tear watching this, but only because of how powerfull the original was and how THAT made me feel.

Can't rate this show higher than 5/10. At least the costumes are quite good and some of the casting fits a lot better than in the terrible movie adaptation.

I recommend watching the origianl instead.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003)
10/10
This show stormed my heart! I loved every single episode!
19 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first time I was made aware of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer was back in 2004 when I was 14 years old. Back than I was going through a tough puberty and when my best female friend at that time tried convince me to watch this. Well, I was somewhat... appalled: A mostly female cast, including a cheerleader who fights vampires, who is also in love with a vampire, together with a nerd, who is also a witch and a guy whose only super power is making jokes all the time.

This could only be for girls...YUCK!

Boy was I wrong!

This realization would only come 17 years later during my quarantine due to the evil C. Out of boredom I decided to give Buffy a try...and what can I say. It hooked me instantly. The overall lightheartedness of the show and the easy accessible characters are just what I needed in these dreadful times. There are so many bad shows out there these days, and as a guy who grew up watching sci fi of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, it was so good to see the old style of weekly shows again, with an ensemble cast. Every single episode has something unique and memorable. I could not find a single really bad one.

Buffy: The Vampire Slayer is one of the best fantasy/mystery/horror-shows out there and it is clear that later shows like Supernatural or Grimm, were heavily influenced by this one.

Also of note:
  • Buffy is what sparked the vampire craze of the late 90s and early 2000s and would set up such cliches as the always smoking and leather coat wearing, pale, good-looking vampire.

  • Is the first television program that ever used the expression "to google" (Willow asks Buffy in 2002, season 7 episode 4: "Have you googled her yet?). Therefore, is the show credited for spreading the term.

  • Angel, Buffys mysterious lover has his own Spin off show, which is also great!

I highly recommend this. It is a shame it took me all these years to finally watch it. Go watch Buffy on Disney+!

Ps: Buffy TVS and Angel are THE BEST shows on Disney+! Sad but true!

The Expanse: Nemesis Games (2021)
Season 5, Episode 10
7/10
Heavy Spoilers! Weakest writing of the entire show!
6 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
One of the weirdest writing decisions I have seen in my life. The way the authors wrote Alex out of the story is outright offensive to the fictional character "Alex Kamal".

"The day was saved by our heroes...AAAAAAAAAAAAND than Alex died of a stroke. THE END!" This is no joke! This literally how they killed of one of the best and most beloved characters of the show!

Seriously what a weak way to get rid of an actor...They should have either found a more respectful way to kill him of or replace the Actor Cas Anvar with someone else... This is especially bad since Alex DOES NOT DIE IN THE BOOKS!

To rate this last Episode 9/10 is ridiculous! Because of the weak writing around the passing of Alex I can't rate this higher than 7/10. Otherwise this last episode was quite good. This is why I also can't go any lower.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)
2/10
Who?
15 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Who is this old man? Wait, that's not Captain Picard! And who is this woman? Wait, that is NOT Seven Of Nine! They Ruined these Characters! They ruined it all!

Seriously, this is not Star Trek and here is why:

Why does Data only call out to Captain Picard?
  • Geordi La Forge has always been Data's closest friend in TNG!
  • He respected Data right from the Start
  • He was always giving him help and advice regarding Data's wish to be human without making fun of him

So why does he not send for Geordi to help him? Especially since Picard was always "mildly annoyed" by Data. The captain respected Data merely on a professional level, but a deep close friend to him, he was never!

So where is Geordi?

Why do the Romulans need help from the Federation?

The Romulan Star Empire is...well...A BLOODY EMPIRE... with hundreds and hundreds of planets under their rule, a huge Starfleet to enforce their law and keep the empires peace. And now you are telling me that this SUPERPOWER of the galaxy cannot mount its own rescue mission and is also not able to relocate its refugees on the hundreds of hundreds of planets they rule?

This! Is! Absurd!

Regarding the above, keep in mind that these refugees are the inhabitants of their former home world, so basically the most romulan Romulans there are. And now the rest of the empire leaves its own core-people living as poor bums without any help what so ever scattered in federation space.... Yea, right!

I could go on about the Romulans in this show, since they are portrayed so immensely wrong and unlike the Romulans in original Trek but that just would take too long.

Speaking of poor bums: It has been established countless times in original Trek, that poverty, hunger and suffering has been abolished in federation space in the future...

Remember when Seven Of Nine was a gun wielding super mercenary in Star Trek Voyager?

What? You do not remember that?

Well that's probably because she wasn't. She has always been a scientist and later a teacher to the freed Borg kids.

Data had a "daughter". Her name was Lal. He loved her dearly and was actually sad when she died in TNG. So why was he painting this Soji-person and dreaming about her as his daughter?

They cloned Data...an android...how? How does one clone memory from something that does not store memory...what is this nonsense?

Am I the only one ore does this show strangely feel like they were trying to copy the Expanse...just in the Star Trek universe?
  • Rocinante in the Expanse, La Sirena in Picard...Spanish named ships in both shows
-rag-tag group of people who have to do something in a dystopian dark future, also in both shows

Com on...it is obvious...with the exception that the Expanse works...STP does not!

There is more wrong with this show, but these are the things that bothered me the most. It is as if the creators of this show did not watch original Trek since they know nothing about it.

Hurr Durr, who famous in Star Trek? Hurr Durr, Picard and Data! Let's put in show! Seven Of Nine also famous, Hurr Durr...and hooooooot! Let's put in show, too and they have to do THING in space! NOW SHOW GOOOOOOOOD, Hurr Durr!

This is how I imagine the creators planned this. Nonsense! Shame on them!

No all jokes aside, my final recommendation: If you are interested in Star Trek and want to enter the Universe, don't watch this! Focus on Original Trek and start either with The Original Series (the 60s style of this isn't for everyone, granted) or The next Generation, which is a must see! But this show is garbage and should not be regarded canon!

The Mandalorian: Chapter 8: Redemption (2019)
Season 1, Episode 8
7/10
Not perfect but good!
29 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The last episode of the Mandalorian was not perfect, but good! There where a few problems with this one, mostly these three points:

1. How could the former imperials kill all the Mandalorians when they where bested by one Mandalorian, a former shock tropper and a Bounty hunter...THREE peolpe! Three People could kill severl squads of troopers, but whole garnison of these Mandalorian "superwarriors" could not?? How?

2. Why did Baby Yoda let the speeder-bike-troopers hit him? He almost killed Cara Dune because she had a friendly match of arm-wrestling with Mando...As if been beaten severel times to the head is ok or somehow not bad...What is that nonsense?

3. When Mando was hit by Moff Gideon, he was Dying, or even near death. IG puts bacta spray on his head wounds and within seconds Mando is ready to fight again. Remember back in Empire Strikes Back, when Luke litterally had to bath in bacta for at least a day in order to be okay again...So why does this bacta heal Mando within seconds? I gues The Mandalorian is a Videogame now.

Other than that the final episode was fine. I liked the conclusion and I'm looking wforward to more! 7/10 Episode. (8/10 show)

The Witcher (2019– )
8/10
This is good!
25 December 2019
The Witcher a very intersting show! Even though it is based on the Books from the 90s it can also be considered the first well done videogame adaptation. Why? because lets face it: Without the huge success of the games, this show would porbapply not have happend. Does dis mean that the curse is broken? Will there be more good shows based on video games? We shall see...

For now, I recommand this show greatly. It is very entertainig and for me, who has read at least one book and played the videogames. There are some changes however that need alittle getting used to. Also the the timeline is a little confusing...but one you figure out that the timeline in not in chronoligical order you get used to it quickly! I like it! 8/10 for now. Lets see how this develops!

Joker (I) (2019)

Joker is a damn good movie!
18 November 2019
These days I view new comic book movies/shows very sceptical: There are just to many of the and most of them follow a certain concept. 2019s "Joker" is really something different! Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a deeplay disturbed person, that after a couple of dangerously unerving events becomes the famous killer-clown of Gotham City. (mild Spoiler...I gues xD). Phoenix does so well in portaying Fleack's mental illness, I would not wonder if he gets an Oscar for this.

I really enjoied this movie, also because it made me think about it for a long time afterwards.

Finnally I would like to say, that this movie is not dangerrous not does it insight violence! Just go watch it! It is really good!

Interesting movie.
16 September 2019
A well crafted and interesting movie! It was good but lacked a bit of world building so that this magical world of Thra feels a bit empty! The 2019 Netflix Show shads light into this "empty" world and impoves upon it greatly! So I recommend watching the Show first. This is just my opinion, comming from a guy who is a few years to young to have watched the movie back in the 80s.

Finally I would like to say to the critics of puppeteering: JUST GIVE IT A CHANCE! It is really good!

Surprislingly good!
16 September 2019
When I stumbled across the first trailer of this show I was a little sceptic: All puppet-cast - small elf-like creatures that are involved in an adventure that seemingly only children can enjoy.... But it turned out that this whole thing is a little to dark for kids and also on an epic fantastic scale. I liked it very much and am now looking forward for season 2.

I previously I had never heared about the Dark Crystal before, so I watched the 1982 movie after I finished the show. I must say, that the movie, while beeing entertaining, lacks a bit of world building, so that this mystical world of Thra seemed kind of empty. The show makes up for that brilliantly and fills this world with a rich history and life, so I can only recommend watching the show first. This is my personal opinion, comming from a guy who is a few years to young to have watched the movie back in the 80s.

I really liked this show and can only applaud the huge efford the Jim Henson Company put into this. Simply amazing! Also kudos and thank you to Netflix, for giving a risky project like this a chance! It was worth it, so keep it up!

Chernobyl (2019)
10/10
This was a very good mini-series! Scary, nightmarish, breathtaking
28 July 2019
Chernobyl is one of these TV-phenomenons that makes you think about it days after you finished the last episode. Its dark and very realistic depiction of a catastrophy that actually happend in the 80s is simply amazing but also scary and nighmarish. You feel for the people involved in the that horror and it is somewhat depressing to watch all these people who know they are doomed to die very slowly an painfully! Thes elemets in particular are a bit hard to swallow. This was one of the extremely rare times I had to stop during an episode and let to sink in what just happend. Breahtaking. Also I would like to point out, that I have never seen a better depiction of the 80s than in this show. You totally believe that this is in the year 1986, even though I am slightly to young to have lived in the 80s and have never been in any part of the soviet union, but this is how I picture it.

I have to recommend this show even thow every body probaply knows what happend in Chernobyl in 1986. For it's quality to depict these events I can only give this show the highest rating: 10/10! You should watch!

Dark (2017–2020)
9/10
This show is a must watch! Also, this is !!NOT!! like that other mystery show!
28 June 2019
After completing season 2, I am now convinced, that Dark is one of the best shows on Netflix, and in general. The plot is so thick and and the characters are so well written, it forces you to think about it a long time after you watched it. Just see for you self! I can't go into detail without spoiling something!

And to make one thing perfectly clear for once and for all: This is NOT NOT NOT like Stranger Things! The only similarities are that they both take place in the 80s and it is about missing children AND THAT IS IT!...but there is just SO MUCH more to it thant that! I have heared so many people in my circle of friends talking about how they stopped watching after episode 2 because "it is to much like Stranger Things." Well, you guys are missing out big TIME! Infact I'm almost certain that Dark's story is much deeper than ST's, since it it's story is streched over the cause of over 90 years.

ST tells a good and very straight forward story, that I also like. In Dark, things are much more complex and the show is able throw some serious plot twists into your face and you will sit in front of the screen mindblown severel times during the show. Especially in season 2. Damn! Now I'm really looking forward to season 3.

After viewing season 2 I have to raise my over all rating form 8 to 9/10 stars. Lets see if that changes after season 3.

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)
7/10
That is it! GOT is over. Sadly a huge letdown in the last season. Here is my review, 8 years after I rated GOT the first time.
21 May 2019
Originally I rated the entire show with solid 10/10 stars. The suspence and drama it delivered, were just amazing. Awesome characters you were rooting for and an insanely deep world made it almost a torture to wait for the next season.

A few days ago the final episode of Game Of Thrones last season has aired and sadly...it sucked! The whole final season was just a rushed mess and left you very disapointed. Do not get me wrong, it is ok that everything happens as it happens but is goes way to fast. The character changes make no sence, becuase of the poor, rushed writing. I get what the writer wanted to tell us but they should have taken more time to build all this up. 6 Episodes were just not enough. It would have needed another whole season to make it believable.

The only good thing about the final season is the acting. Peter Dinklage especially did an awesome job with what he was given. Over all the acting in this show was superb...with the exception of a cameo by a certain mussician in season 7...

Since the last season is done so very poorly I have to revoke my previous rating. Even if I see the good season now, I will always remeber how bad and lazy the writing is going to get. That will make it hard to rewatch the show in the future. It appears as if everything the writers have build up in the first seasons, does not matter, so I have to give the whole show a 7/10 rating.

If you have not seen Game of Trones yet, either don't watch it, or stop after season 7. It would probaply be best to wait for GRRM to finish the novels and read them instead.

That's it folks...and All Hail To The Queen Of Starbucks...

Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Season 8, Episode 3
3/10
Leaves you very dissapointed!
30 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is very overrated. The 9.1 score (30.04.2019) is ludicrous! One of the worst episodes of the show. There is to much wrong with the plot. Don't get me wrong, I rated the entire show with a solid 9/10 but this was just bad!

Here are the main things that bothered me:

-How did our heroes survive the first charge of the undead army? thousands of soldirs are simply swept away by countless undead, but the main chracters somehow survive?

-nonense cavlery charge at the beginning of the battle. 40000 riders are sent into the complete darkness without knowing where the enemy is and than are killed within seconds...only Sir Jorah returns...somehow. But at least the burning swords looked cool...

-Arya kills the Night King...How? He was sorrounded by thousands of undead and all of his officers...she magically flew across all the undead soldirs and jumped him with her knife.

-The Night King is brought down very unspectacular. He does not speak a word and barely does any fighting himself.

-John has no part in killing the Night King. So why did the lord of light resurrect him? So that he can kill Cersai?

-Arya has Superpowers now...Countless adult Unsullied slodirs who train their entire lifes from child- to manhhood to become the perfect soldirs are easily washed away by the undead charge...but 15 year old Arya who trained a few years to become a SILENT ASSASSIN...NOT A WARRIOR...is somehow able to kill the undead left and right with ease.

-The Undead have super senses...but the Night King does not??? During the library scene, Arya has to hide from some undead by using her sielnt sneaking skilkls. (By the way: Why does she have to hide?...a few scenes earlier she killed them with ease!*) She crawls under a table, but due to the wounds she got from the previous fighting, she bleeds on the floor. The undead soldirs are able to hear the blood drops hit the floor and rush to find her under the table...So why can't the Night King hear her magically flying through the air before she kills him?

*The writers porbaply created this scene to remind the audience that she is a SILENT ASSASSIN...NOT A WARRIOR!

-Sam becomes a coward again...for some reason! You would think that his time with the crows would have given him some spine...but no! For some reason Sam is just as clumsy and cowerdly as he was at the beginning of the show...also he ist still fat, after all this fighting and wandering around in the wilderness. Do the writers know that one can actually lose waight and that beeing overwaight is not a character trait ?

Fazit: There should have been much more main character deaths , Arya is why to overpowered all of a sudden, over all anticlimactic ending to the white walker story ark, that has been build since episode one, eight years ago.

Dissappointing 6/10 episode in a usual 9/10 show.

Firefly (2002–2003)

I am angry...
8 April 2019
...because it took me 16 years to discover this awesome show! Why was it cancelled so early? This could have been the next big Sci fy franchise on an equel level of Star Trek. If you like shows like The Expanse, you should not miss this great show! I watched the whole thing (sadly onle one season ;..-( in 3 days.

The characters in this are so likeable´, it took only two episodes to make the audience care about them! Something that Star Trek discovery hast not been able to amcomplish in two seasons.

I hope that some network finds it in their heart to "revive" Firefly, even though chances are slim, since it has been 16 years since it was cancelled. One can only hope...

This was fun! Why all the hate?
8 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The Orvills second episode of season two was one of the best episodes in the whole show! Why does it get all the hate? I do not understand!

Bortus comes from alien world where the people only have one gender! This was established right from the start! So why are people offended by the fact that he "watches" porn containing members of his own single gender race? I don't get it!

The only thing that is a little strange is the fact, that a computer virus infecting the simulator room, can cripple the entire starship. Why aren't these systems kept seperated from each other? This was something that was also bothering me in the Star Trek Shows.

Otherwise this episode was great!

Keep it up!

Good show! Don't listen to the Book snobs!
16 June 2018
The Alienist is a good, solid show! It was gripping to the last episode when thy finally confront the killer! I was actually a bit sad when it was over becuause the 3 main chartacters have grown on me. Speeking of the main characters: I have read reviews where people complain about the female lead beeing a strong independant woman. Well, from what I understand she is portayed a strong personallity in the books so why shouldn't she in the show? Do you want faithfulness to the sourcemarterial or not? Make up your mind! Also do not listen to the book snobs. It might be true that a few things are different but when has there ever been a show or movie based on a novel that has been exactly like the novel? Never!

I'm looking forward to the next seasom(s)!

Aweful!
15 May 2018
This series disrespects the origianl shows massively! Stay as far away from this as possible! To all the newcomeras to the SG franchise I highly recommend watching Stargate SG1, starting with the 1994 Movie. You will love it if you are into the classical sci fi show-concept! Do not judgwe this franchise for this bad example of a show.

And to the creators of Stargate Origins I would like to say: Please listen to the fans! Everyone wants to know what happens after Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis. So either continue SGA or create a new show playing after Atlantis has retunred to earth. You would have a series with a strong fanbase behind it.

"Avengers: Infinity War" sucks...
5 May 2018
...so good!

WoW! This movie was good! Very good, to say the least. I sat there in the theatre, chained tro mey seat because it was so very entertaining and exciting. I can safly say that this is the best marvel movie to date! I'm even inclined to say that its better than "The Guardians" movies which where my favourites till today. 10/10!

Go watch it, but make sure you watch the other marvel movies from disney before you seee this one, because you might not get what is going on all the time. I recently rewatched all the MCU movies and I must say It helped greatly. There were a lot of people in the theatre who said things like: "Who was this guy again" "Why was he there" This is the only negative thing I have to say about Infinity war. It might get confusing if you have not senn the other movies. But other than that! Awesome!

Disappointing
11 January 2018
Star Wars - The Last Jedi was disappointing, to say the least. To many mistakes were made, no questions were answered, as if they just do not care, which is probaply the case. Even Mark Hamill said that he did no like what they did for the original charakters. It sometimes reminded me a lot of the prequels from the early 2000s, so I can not rate this movie higher than 6/6.5!

TLJ leaves you not wanting to know how the story goes on from here. I simply do not care since they failed to make the new charakters more intersting!

I defently will not watch the next movie at its premiere, instead I'll wait till its out on Netflix!

Dissappointing!

More Star Trek than STD...and great on its own!
15 October 2017
I grew up watching TNG, DS9 Voyager and Enterprise as a kid in the 90s and early 2000s and in later days the original series on VHS recordings that my father made. I also love Stargate (SG1 and Atlantis) which I re-watch every second year. So you can call me a huge fan of the classical Sci Fi genre. The Oville reminds immensely of these classical shows and I am actually excited when a new episode comes up just as much when I was a kid with Star trek or Stargate.

Comparison to "Star Trek Discovery": When another episode of STD comes up I'm like: "oh boy...lets get it over with."(WTF did I just write. xD) because It feels slow and depressing, the main character is boring and completely unlikable, there is no crew to get attached to, no spirit, nothing. Just your generic war story.

The Orville on the other Hand has all that what made these classical shows great: An interesting lead, a recognizable crew in which everyone has his/her moment, a world where you would want to live in and a good moral behind it with a pinch of social criticism.

The point is, I really like The Orville! And, yes, it is heavily influenced by Star Trek and an ill willed person might call it a more comedic knockoff of TNG but it is interesting and entertaining enough to hold up on its own. I sincerely hope that its going to continue for at least 7 seasons!

Keep it up, Mr. MacFarlane!
