Gibraltar (I) (2013)

No thrill at all. But nice images of Gibraltar
15 October 2023
A "review" said Gibraltar is a "thrill ride that goes higher and higher"?

I certainly didn't see the same movie.

Because if you want to see Gilles Lellouche playing as usual, in a made for TV movie, with no rythm, no dramatical intensity, and a rushed storytelling, you could be pleased by this film.

But if you want to see a riveting film filled with tension and a nice story progression then Gilbraltar isn't the one to watch.

It really feels like a bad TV film.

We're never really afraid for the main caracter, as we're supposed to be in this kind of film, and the story is evolving too fast, like there are missing parts in the script.

Something is not working unfortunately.

No thrill at all. But nice images of Gibraltar though.

I can't believe this film is from the same director
12 June 2023
I can't believe this film is from the same director who made "Cette femme-là" or "Le Poulpe" (both brilliant movies).

Since those films, Nicloux made some good or average films but never a really bad film.

Now he has!

I rarely rate a 1 on a film on IMDB, but I really can't find anything positive in "La Tour" except maybe the starting idea.

The rest doesn't deliver as it is basicaly a short movie material extended to the maximum to make a feature film.

The result is very very painfull to watch and I felt the film would never end. End credits at 1h25 were a deliverance!

It is a lazy written film, badly shot with most mediocre interpreters.

Really nothing to save here, except your time if you're reading this.

Avoid at all costs!

PS: You'd better watch "Blindness" or "The divide" if you're interested in interactions between humans during end of times.

The Place (2017)

Terrible film: don' t waste your time!
9 April 2023
There are films that you could like or not depending your tastes.

But I can't find nothing to like in "The Place".

Technicians and actors are doing their job but that's all.

All the film happens in the same set with just one external view.

I have nothing against that when the script is good (Sleuth 1972 is the best exemple) but unfortunately this is not the case here.

The plot here is uninteresting: people are coming to ask favor to this guy living in a restaurant (why, and how they find him is never explained), and the guy open a notebook and ask something in exchange.

The film is continuously showing the same few persons coming back to the restaurant but nothing really happen, they just expose their change of mind or minor difficulties to perform their task while the restaurant guy is eating. Repeat, repeat, cut with a scene with the waitress.

Repeat, repeat, repeat, waitress scene etc... Twists mentioned by others reviewers are not existant, there is only a connection between the differents persons, nothing fancy.

I can't believe how someone could genuinely rate this film more than a 6 (and even a 6 is very very generous).

It is sooo boring! It was so painfull to wait the end of the film. The 105mn felt 240mn, and no reward at the end.

Don't waste your time.

I would have rate it 2 or 3 maybe, but because of people rating this emptyness a 10 I had to compensate with a 1.

Deep Water (I) (2022)
8/10
An excellent slowburn thriller
19 March 2022
First I have to admit Adrian Lyne is one of my favorites directors and I've been waiting 20 years to watch his next film, so when I heard this film won't get a release in theatres I was a little anxious.

Well, I even went more anxious after reading some reviews from people who don't appreciate Mr Lyne work.

Fortunately, Mr Lyne is still very talented at +80 years old, and continues to make excellents movies and Deep Water is a very well crafted one (except that Lyne shot it in video so the photography is not a nice as his other movies).

It's good to see the habits from this director back on a screen again: the theme, the way of filming, the atmosphere, and of course: the dog :-)

Deep Water is definitively a slowburn and you have to let it flow to appreciate it.

Of course if you're expecting an erotic movie you're gonna be disapointed (same as people who didn't get that 9 1/2 Weeks was a love story, not a softcore movie) but if you have no special expectations and you let the film tells you its story, you'll enjoy this excelent slowburn thriller.

I'm so happy this film is good, because it might be the last of Adrian Lyne if he'll have to wait 20 years again to make the next one...

Rating: 8 (because it is Lyne, otherwise it should be a solid 7)

Boring to death, but technically great
7 October 2019
I'm not usually taking the time to write a review here, but as I had the "opportunity" to watch this film at an early preview, I thought it was the right time to do it (especially as there wasn't another review at the time of the first submission of this review)).

Well, for a start I'm a huge fan of Aardmann Studio for a long time, and the first Shaun the Sheep movie is one of my favorite of their last productions, so I was really excited to watch this sequel.

What a let down! This is the worst Aardmann movie I ever saw. The first film was so funny, while this one will just make you smile occasionaly, and that if you're easy to please. (The theater was filled with a lot of young children that are usually easy to please: I didn't heard them laugh very much either)

The story is about an extra-terrestrial lost on Earth who want to return Home. OK they chose to do a parody of E.T, why not? The problem is the jokes are dull, the references so heavy, and the worst of it, is they managed to make this film annoying. I mean so annoying that I nearly left the theater (and I never do that).

Aside of the non funny jokes, the principal issue is the gibberish used non stop during the movie. In the first film that was used with parcimony, but here, oh my... Watching the main characters "speaking" like this during the full length of the movie: it is unbearable. The only good moment is when I heard the music "out of control" (it perfectly describes what happens during the writing of this sequel). So many talents (animation) wasted by mediocre writing. What a shame!

So, to resume I would say: this film has an entertainement quality level near of zero, but its animation quality is excellent as usual . But what is the point watching a boring movie? Avoid, and watch again the first film instead! Summary: Boring to death, but technically great.
