Fantastic documentary so far
18 April 2024
I just watched the first episode and I loved it! I thought the illustrations they used were beautiful (in the style of ancient frescoes) and a nice touch. I enjoyed seeing the variety of experts, such as the volcano guy and construction workers who were able to lend the insights of their trade--fascinating to see how it hasn't changed in thousands of years, but moreover I enjoy hearing from different disciplines. I liked how the theories evolved over time instead of staying static. I often find in history documentaries the theories would be static and the process to those conclusions wasn't shared, but here I felt like we got a better insight into their process and more information as to why they drew these conclusions. Excited to see the next two instalments!

Relaxing!

I'm so glad I discovered this little gem. I love it! Some of the transformations are incredible and it's great if you're looking for inspiration for your garden. Monty gives lots of information as well; I hadn't been familiar with him before this show (I'm in Canada) but I can see why he's well-known--he's personable, not afraid to get his hands dirty, and gives great advice. I highly recommend the show if you're looking for something more peaceful to watch. Some of the guests were kind of annoying, but most were great.

Seems fishy
15 February 2020
I found it interesting but something seemed . . . off about it. It definitely seemed one-sided. I did a bit of sleuthing and according to one source, one of the children was trained to act like they had RS. One of the doctors also reportedly had his words taken out of context in a way that seems really suspicious to me.

I don't doubt the stories behind why these refugees were in Sweden. But keeping that in mind, you have to consider that people will do anything to keep themselves and their families safe--including lying. (I don't think that makes someone a bad person, but gaining publicity from lies certainly does.) You can see how a refugee child coming down with RS can help the family secure asylum, and so I've taken the documentary with a grain of salt.

I'm not saying all of these families are liars and this isn't a real thing, but looking back after I've watched it, it seems more like one-sided propaganda than a well-balanced, multi-faceted documentary that goes into depth on the topic.

Graphic
25 January 2020
I think enough has been said about the very ending--talk about projection! And, that it easily could have been condensed, which leads me into my main problem with this: having finished it, I can't believe I watched it for how unnecessarily graphic it was. I switched tabs when it showed LM's video footage, but even then I was haunted by the sounds of the videos or the descriptions of the acts that had taken place.

As a kid, I would sometimes watch true crime documentaries with my parents, and watching this made me realize how vividly I can picture and feel these crimes taking place, meaning it's been somewhat traumatic through time watching shows depicting violence and murder, because I feel like I was there.

But this took it to another level and I don't understand why it had to go into such detail. Nay, why anything in this day has to be so unapologetically explicit. People might laugh, but it is possible to be traumatized by this type of content, because seeing and/or imagining can be interpreted as "real" by the brain. Don't take that lightly.

So, this offered illumination at the very least of how scarring it is for me to watch true crime documentaries, and I urge others who are sensitive or have a vivid imagination to give this one a pass.

Best movie I've seen in a while!
22 June 2019
I read some spoilers before watching, but this did not impact my enjoyment of the performance given by the actors in this film. Byrne did particularly well in translating the feelings of Daughter to the audience without necessarily stating those feelings directly. Everything about it was done well and I walked away with no complaints; though some may not have liked the apparent ambiguity of the ending, as others have stated, it was given away early in the film. For the fullest enjoyment, you do have to be able to detect things being implied--and not everyone can do this, well or at all, so be aware of that.

Honestly, I would watch it a second time, and that's rare these days. Give it a watch!

Drivel

I didn't see the reviews before I choked this one down. I didn't laugh once and I don't even know how a movie can be this un-funny. I finished it and I feel deeply disappointed in myself for committing to a film that didn't deserve it.

Don't pass this one up!
4 January 2019
What a great show! I didn't read reviews before I devoured this series within a week. I found it to be a profound and moving story; I'm not much of a crier when it comes to movies and TV shows, but this one had me in tears on more than one occasion.

My only real complaints are that the last couple of seasons are just action scene after action scene. I still enjoyed it, but it's not really my thing as much as delving into the backstories of characters, building relationships, etc.

Still, it's well worth the watch and I plan on watching it at least a second time--something I haven't done for a series in years.

Doesn't live up to the hype
4 January 2019
I thought I'd really enjoy this show after the first episode--but the shallow characters and political correctness thrown in awkwardly started to wear after the first couple of episodes. I kept watching for some reason and got to episode 7 before I skimmed the rest.

I think the weakest point was the characters. Joe was compelling from the get-go but he couldn't make up for everyone else being forgettable; nor could I get over the fact Joe and Beck's relationship just didn't . . . make sense. I couldn't understand why he wanted her at all.

In the end, it left me disappointed after such a promising start.
