Aftersun (2022)
Great directorial debut, but overall pointless
Let's start with the pros. The performances are pretty solid, there's good cinematography, and overall the movie looks and sounds good.
Where it falls apart is in my opinion pacing and plot. The movie is marketed as a daugther recollecting this vacation, supposedly to reflect on her father figure. Now mind you, I watched it without looking anything up except for the general reception, so I went in with a complete blank slate.
Soon enough I thought this was going to be one of "those" movies. That is: full of seemingly pointless scenes that sometimes drag too long for no good reason. And I was more or less right, as by the end of it I kinda wonder what the director wanted to say about these characters. I appreciate not spoon-feeding the audience, but by the end of the movie we barely know anything about the father, other than that he's in some financial distress (but that begs the question of how he afforded what doesn't look like a cheap vacation oversea when he cares about losing a diving mask), and that he's depressed on some level. Other than some mood swings and quirky moments we don't really "reflect" on his personality that much.
Plus, adult Sophie could be cut from the movie and absolutely nothing would change. We get 10 seconds of time skip about one hour in to find out she's lesbian and has a daughter. Neither of those have any relation to anything in the movie. Then there's another timeskip at the very end, and that doesn't add anything either.
Overall a very anemic experience.
Rapiniamo il Duce (2022)
Way too tryhard
The main issue of this movie is that it tries way too hard to be cool, and never feels spontaneous.
I mean, what's the point of the female lead singing covers of songs released decades after the events in the movie? Super distracting and doesn't fit at all. Cringe all over.
General lack of self awareness plagues the whole film, and in its search for coolness often takes itself too seriously.
I struggle at figuring out who the intended audience was. Older generations would find it too "modern", the younger ones would only be reminiscing the movies which clearly inspired this one, doing similar things but better. I can only recommend it if you are die hard fans of the genre.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Safe and solid work from a director staying within the comfort zone
There's not much to say bout the movie, as if you are familiar with his filmography, especially his early work, you'll get eaxctly what you can hate or love about him.
A crime drama with an unreliable narrator and semi-nonlinear plot. Can't say I have seen all of his work but if you have watched Snatch and Lock and Stock you won't get nothing different than a more refined but samey rendition of his style.
The heavy and 4th wall breaking editing is quite on the nose and distracting, adding little to the plot. Luckily enough past the first quarter of the movie it tones done quite a bit, and by the first third the plot starts finally picking up, making the experience quite enjoyable.
The Professor and the Madman (2019)
?
I don't know what all the positive reviewers smoked. I'll give it a 5 and it must say thanks. Extremely funny sometimes.
