Geek Girl (2024)
Subtle but quite powerful
Let's get this out of the way first, the base concept of makeover to model is about as deep a bird's pond. But this is not all what this show is about.
Sure that is the setting, but there is simply more. The main character is, superbly displayed i might add, a woman/teenager somewhere on the spectrum, without that being the defining charactertrait. What makes it stand out, is that it is never expicitly said. Her parents are oblivious and attribute it to trauma.
Normaly i would list exeptional performances, but i loved the entire cast. But my own personal heroes are the directors and the writers. There isn't a single character that lacks substance. Everyone has their own little stroyline, neatly wrapped up almost entirely in the first season.
Now for the next paragraph: do me a favour and read it completely before you outrage: I hate, how gay people are portrayed in movies and tv shows. Sexuality is not the core of a person, atleast not enitrely. Which drives me absolutly nuts. If i were portrayed like that, i would be a straight male, which say almost nothing about me as a person. Wilbur Evans by Emmanuel Imani is at first glance a quirky, gay fashion diva. Yet during the show he is portrayed as kind, loyal, passionate, self sacrificing and genuinly caring which in my opinion say more about a person then their sexual preference and identity. A lot of actors/directors seem to have a problem showing depth to such a character, often leaving the token-gay-character just to show the modicum of inclusivity.
In many ways this show is like a perfume, brief yet not overpowering, allowing each person time discover what they like about it, and if you just look, i think there is something for everyone.- Atleast it was so for me.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Forced
The baseplot is fine. Every other plotdevice and forced reveal is bad. Atleast 3 conversations, that i can remember, revolve around how even the main characters think that something is unbelievable. Talk about breaking the 4th wall...
As for the action part.... hot fudge it is bad.... for 200M budget you would think that they actually knew how to shoot an immersive and gripping experience. Alas, no.
Camera angles, pathing, even the general set up of those scences. You can "feel" how much effort and planning went into making this movie, which is to say very little.
It is like the director thought, explosion + screaming = good scene.
Personally i didn't enjoy it one bit. The only way to do that you'd have to completely shut of common logic or brain activity.
The only saving grace is chris pratt. His humor and general depth and versatility shows.
Loki (2021)
hands down, best marvel production thus far
So far 5 episodes are out. And they are great. The character development for loki is spot on. I won't spoil anymore but this is more emotional than anything the marvel uinverse has produced so far.
Stargate Origins (2018)
Stargate
Stargate SG1 was a series not about bigger guns, but about real people. Their conflicts, their dilemmas were the primary concern. This is what made it interesting. It wasn't a drama but real honest science fiction. The entire series shows interpersonal relationships, without romance.
Sargate atlantis managed to find a balance between the two, there were relationships, but the weren't the primary focus.
So far i have seen 3 episodes of stargate origins and i don't like any of them.
It is drama and could have been interesting aswell, if and i am sorry to say this, the cast believed in the script themselves. Their acting seem over the top and wooden. What annoys me the most are the nazis. I am from germany myself and no one speaks like the cast did. It just doesn't sound authentic.
What gets me the most: nazis are bad, they are stereo typical bad human beings as bad as they come. For fucks sake: they started the second world war! So how come this german commander simply doesn't kill the hostages? Why would they care for two archeologists in egypt? The rational choice for any military commander would be silencing the witnesses because of military secrets. As a matter of fact: how can 8 odd nazis walz into a britsh command zone?
As a stargate fan there are serval tens of loopholes i dislike: The car battery hocked to the stargate, the dialing itself, the fact that there are only 2 (!) scientists working on a construct which basematter seem to differ from anything on this planet.
But the most irredeemable mistake: In the first couple of scenes you can see that the stargate itself is moving after being thouched (i forgot who it was). This was the moment that completely and utterly ruined the entire series for me.
A last plea: i am fairly certain any stargate fan could write a better script. As a matter of fact the fanbase still exist, why wouldn't you use any of them to co write or atleast read the script before production?
also recasting Connor Trinneer as Prof. langford? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Weird one
Let's face it, Starlord has several origins all of which are better then this one. Honestly this adaptation is waaaaay better then the storyline in the comics. it makes it seem more plausible aswell, much to my surprise... Still, son of freaking celestial turned planet.... come on! 10 out of 10 for the execution, -100 for the plot and origin story...
Lethal Weapon (2016)
Amazing insight into a depressed person
The show is amazing. That said, even though it packs a lot of humor i wouldn't advise anyone below 18 or even 21 to watch this show.
The underlying plot is depression and how it affects people. The show doesn't pull any punches: you will see the main character drunk, doing drugs and seriously contemplating suicide more than once (and more importantly it shows the phenomenon suicide-by-cop, in which the suicidee doesn't actively kill himself but creates dangerous situations for the sole purpose of death).
This show isn't something you should watch as entertainment because it isn't. The humor only softens the tragic story which is by no means funny.
More importantly than anything the series depicts depression in a realistic way, which is an insane feat both for the actor and the screenwriter. More often then not the screenwriters depict depression as a permanent state of sadness/irrationality which it isn't.
I honestly hope Clayne Crawford receives a lot of recognition for this depiction of the ever smiling and ridiculing detective. This is the best acting i have ever witnessed in my entire life.
Extinct (2017)
Enjoyable series
I found this little marvel by chance and felt compelled to write a review.
The series starts of with an interesting concept, What would happen if humanity got wiped out? Furthermore: What would happen if we got a second chance at it?
The series starts of with 2 very distinct problems:
What defines a human and what defines free will?
Both are concepts which are touched upon in other series of the same genre. Brilliant examples are Stargate (goa'uld/Tok'ra, they are an organism resembling a snake that needs a host to survive. They are defined by being parasitic/symbiotic respectively) and Falling skies.
Both series are good in their own way, but relied to heavily on techno-babble and plot armor instead of meaningful choices based on moral/ethics. Interestingly this series, manages to find a balance between both.
What has me baffled is the response of the critics. The premise and execution of the show is original yet it received bad responses. I disagree.
I highly recommend this show and i hope to see more of it.
Ps.: I would like to buy DVDs of the series, where could i buy them from? (i live in Germany and i have searched myself stupid for hard copies)
