X-Men '97 (2024– )

Bad storytelling, random events
6 April 2024
You know why the original x-men was so great? Because the story was great, the writing was great, the characters were great, everything is just great. They were all unique individuals with their own personalities.

But this reboot, if you can even call a reboot has none of the above. The storytelling was horrendous. It's very fragmented, just bits and pieces here, and bits and pieces there. Everything just happened without rhyme and rhythm, episodes after episodes. They feel more like filler episodes than anything else.

What's equally as bad is there's no character development like at all. It's presumed that the audience already knew these characters. Problem is, looks aside, they hardly even feel like there're the same characters. They're like complete strangers living under one roof, with no friendship, kinship, structure, nor curriculum to tie or link them together.

I'd rather they make a fresh reboot than doing this because i don't enjoy this series one bit. 6/10 is already a high score from me.

All of Us Strangers Review
23 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Whoever wrote this must have had some exposure to the chinese cultures. This is not a story about your next door neighbour, it's a ghost story, a purely fictional ghost story. What sets this apart from other ghost stories is that the protagonist is gay.

Lots of ghost stories were told like this, it's never made clear if it's real or imaginary. And that's the same with this story.

There's a chinese expression "xin li you gui (there's a ghost in your heart)" which means you're hiding something. The reason why they use the word "ghost" there is because it lingers around in your heart, and on your mind, just like a secret would.

Lots of the protagonist's emotions stem from his regrets and his loneliness, and his personality. In case you haven't caught on, he isn't your typical hollywood portrayal of a gay person (who is usually loud, obnoxious and perverted).

Ghost stories when done right, can be quite captivating. I particular like "The Haunting of Bly Manor", which is actually a love story masquerading as a ghost story.

i hated it
10 December 2023
I don't know how this show can get such a high score. This is perhaps the worst korean drama i've seen to date.

The main story sucked big time. The side stories were just separate side stories, they don't add anything to the show.

The worst part is the acting. The lead female actress simply can't act (and neither can that bunch of unprofessional cops). Her acting was so horrendous (or perhaps it was the directing) that she just came across as a plastic, fake-ass, pretentious, two-faced, unfeeling character. She had no chemistry with her boyfriend, or her parents, or with anyone. Many times, i had hoped that she would just die, instead of just toying around with the villain, pretending to be innocent or self-righteous.

I ended up rooting for the villain, because he was the only who felt real and sincere.

Who am I? What am I?
7 December 2023
I really enjoyed the show, genuinely hadn't laughed this much in a long time. If you're looking for something entertaining to pass your time with, look no further, this is it.

The story is simple and often an exaggeration of the on-going fads in america.

What i find so remarkable about this movie is that it is able to illicit laughs by illustrating how ridiculous some of those trends had been. I called them "trends" here because had them been "cultures", america would have been doomed.

Advice for the young and impressionable, going with the flow is fine, it may even be fun, but forsaking all common sense and blindly following something is just stupid.

A nice looking, but stupid movie
15 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Visually, it's great, but underneath it all, it's just a stupid stupid movie. Nothing in this movie is realistic or even remotely makes any sense. It's just one unrealistic situation after another, and then followed by another.

I still couldn't wrap my head around that for some, it's perfectly okay to kill fellow humans, but not robots. Or how the united states would attack the rest of the world unprovoked at the whim of a single person. It's a poorly thought out story laden with satires.

How is "powering off" such a bad thing? It's just like sleeping. Just takes a while more to boot up, that all.

I must be watching a different movie
8 November 2023
Yes, the movie is enjoyable. But not for the reasons or praises you see in here (have to be cryptic to out-maneuver the filters and ai).

If you sort by date, and look at the first ten entries, everyone who's giving this a ten is like praising luke kim for his one scene to the moon. Really? His role, in the grand scheme of things, is inconsequential. It's small, it doesn't matter who played that part; and there's nothing, absolutely nothing memorable or praise worthy about that performance.

The cast all did an wonderful job, but you know who caught by eye? Well, the actor who played ben franklin, that's who. Good actors can let you share their emotions, bad actors just make faces and call that acting. Awkwafina is not much of an actress by any yardstick, but fortunately for her, her role didn't require much.

So what do i like about the movie? Well, good story, good script, and it's well directed. That's the takeaway from me.

A portrayal of the human psyche
5 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
We all have our 'secret' room. For some though, it may even be a very real room.

You know the expression "in the zone"? It is a state of mind, often coupled with environmental factors, which enables one to do his tasks quickly, efficiently, and skillfully (ie do good quality work in a short span of time).

Well, this man, the protagonist, has an imaginative room that is in his head. When he zones out, he is not zoning out, but immersing deep into thoughts. He's in "the zone", so to speak.

He also talks to himself a lot, over all kinds of things, over things that bugged him, even for things so trivial most people wouldn't even pay much thoughts to. TBH, everyone has those internal conflicts. It's how we handle them that makes us unique individuals. We won't let them manifest into something that could affect our lives.

All in all, i enjoyed the movie. I didn't find it boring, i found it kind of sad actually (the depiction of this man's life).

PS: this movie left out a quintessential type of person at the workplace: the suck ups -- the bootlicking, brown-nosing sycophants. This fictitious company is actually not that bad of a company to be working for.

Movie lacks direction, doesn't draw you in
29 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The problem with this movie is that they try to be funny and solemn in the same breath. That simply doesn't work.

You have a villain who's not really a full-blown villain, but an unhappy man with a bunch of loyal followers who believed in him. His plan is simple -- to steal some oil, and everybody shares a cut of the loot/profit. It's hard not to to be sympathetic towards his plight, or be impressed by the loyalty his men towards him. Yes, he is a bad man, but he is a bad man with a reason.

Then you have the good guy, who is seemingly unaffected by the death of his own brother. He is like this goofy, happy go lucky guy, who's cracking jokes all the time, even at the inappropriate time. John Cena's best role is as Peacemaker. That series was amazing.

And then there's Jackie Chan, who's always apologizing on screen to his daughter. His children had a good life, but somehow Chan feels that all their misdeeds and misdemeanors were attributed to his actions/inactions.

Disclaimer: I've never seen the anime
30 June 2023
I don't have any problem with the cast, the acting, the CGI, the story, the script, the storytelling, etc, etc... In fact, not having a definitive, clear-cut villain is a plus for me, especially when it's done right. Movie is enjoyable and easy to watch.

There were however, a couple of things that bugged me like a lot. First and foremost, some characters were impervious to damages or injuries, they can get clobbered, and won't even have a scratch on them. That's like next level Superman. It's so out of this world, it takes away from the immersion. Second, the voice-overs were too crisp and studio perfect, lacking the appropriate emotions and ambient noises pertaining to those scenes.

As some had already said, movie doesn't suck, it's just not that great either.

Run of the mill lackluster thriller
25 June 2023
This is for those {redacted} who gave this series is a 10/10 solely from the first episode. How is that even plausible? One episode in, and you've decided that it's a 10 (and from an episode of such quality, no less)? {redacted} {redacted} {redacted}.

This is NOTHING more than your average run of the mill thriller. If it weren't for the Marvel tag, would anyone have given this series a 10/10? I doubt so.

Reviewing just the first episode, and to be real honest with you, it isn't looking too good -- show is boring and not in any way exciting. A lot of eyeballing, stalking and inaction, none of which done tactfully or tactically.

PS: Their special infra-red eyewear looks like your regular everyday glasses. They should have gone with a more consistent look.

PPS: Censorship is real.

An uninspiring mess
14 June 2023
To me, a film/movie is essentially a retelling of a story through the help of motion pictures. I don't know when this concept got lost in the movie industry.

Perhaps it's an indictment of the movie industry these days, or simply just a lack of creativity, filmmakers/writers these days simply throw in bits and pieces of random, incoherent ideas, and call it a film.

If you can't even summarize and put into words what you've seen on the screen, can you even call it a film?

Did the protagonist eventually make his way back 'home'? How were those random stuff that transpired anchored to actual reality? Nobody knows...

Please don't compare this with "Requiem for a Dream". That movie was entirely about drug/substance abuse, tripping out, and the devastating consequences.

Joe Pickett (2021–2023)

Mixed Feelings
11 June 2023
Update: Show gets better over time. Got some answers and explanations for Pickett's behavior. The finale wraps everything up nicely, kind of a fairy tale ending.

One problem though is that some characters just conveniently appear at the right place at the right time -- not too realistic, if you ask me.

6.5/10

Initial Review: Have only just started on season two, and had only just watched episode one.

I'm sorry, maybe there's more to it than meets the eye, but this Joe character sure looks like one big inflexible stubborn mule. And what? He is supposed to be the good guy, the protagonist?

Well, it's refreshing from a storytelling point of view, I'll give you that -- to have a non-conventional main character in a story, but at the same time, this Joe character is so unlikeable, i just hoped that he would die right there and then, in the first episode.

Something is very off about the first episode.

Anyway, gonna watch a few more episodes. Hopefully, it will get better.

Is this really a comedy?
4 June 2023
Someone at work was saying that this was an okay show, so i gave it a go. The episode i watched was season 3 episode 6.

Well... i didn't enjoy it one bit. The show wasn't funny. It's dull, stupid, and crude. I don't even know what that episode was trying to convey other than perhaps maybe "awkwafina is the best version of nora"? Egotistical much, someone?

Nora is the worst. She is rude; and very disrespectful, especially to her dad. It's appalling! She's no adolescent, you know? She's a middle aged woman for goodness sake!

It baffles me how this could have gotten a 7.4/10 rating. I won't be watching anymore of this atrocity, that's for sure.

This is not the movie
28 May 2023
As the plot summary so eloquently puts it:

It is "a deep-dive reimagining of the classic's thriller, exploring timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes toward strong women, personality disorders and coercive control".

Keyword here is 're-imagination'. The TV series certainly has a different vibe/demeanor to it.

There's a huge twist in the last episode. Motivations, what drives people to do what they do, conflicts, misunderstandings, baggages, perceptions, perspectives, people's influences on one another, how a person gets molded into who they are, human psychology, it's all at play there.

There's probably a season 2 coming. I would certainly look forward to it.

I absolutely love this
26 May 2023
I don't think the Chinese in China will appreciate this though, because after all, this is in every sense, an American production. You won't be able to appreciate it unless you've been exposed to both cultures.

The monkey king is an iconic figure in Chinese folklore. All the monkey king ever wanted was to fit in (to be like a regular person). But he can't. He was born from a magical boulder (some said was exposed to a drop of Guanyin's blood) on monkey island, without parents, having an intellect surpassing any humans, but with the appearance of a monkey. He goes about learning, making mistakes, getting abused, and ultimately creating havoc in heaven. And it is then, that his real journey begins.

This show was never about the monkey king, or the bull demon. It's about the journey of an American boy -- fitting in in school, making mistakes, owning up, finding courage in difficult situations, etc.

They created new characters, gave monkey god a son, so that you could see and contrast some of the struggles the monkey god had gone through, but this time though, through the eyes of his son.

These are all new contents, new characters, new stories. Truth is, Ji Gong (the monk) was never a coward. The bull demon was never a real enemy to the monkey king (they were pals actually). And Sandy, was never a woman.

And most people don't even know that the main character in dragon ball was inspired from the very well known monkey king as well.

Great cinematography, but sadly, movie fails at everything else
16 May 2023
The writing has to be one of the worst piece of writings I've ever seen in my life. How many words do you reckon the entire story is? The writer simply create a straw-man -- a common enemy for the audience to hate on, and make them collectively all morons.

Movie is grossly overrated. Nothing in it even makes sense. I hate this kind of movies. I didn't finish watching it, had to give up half way through, hope it doesn't get better. A complete and utter waste of time.

Many people compared this to John Wick. That is like comparing apples and oranges. John Wick is a fictitious character. It's an action movie with choreographed fights. What is this? A bunch of conceited and cocky, but untrained solders throwing their lives away?

This is Nicholas Cage saying 'Look at me, I still got IT'
3 May 2023
The plot itself is very simplistic. The one liner synopsis you see up there is basically all there is to it about the movie.

Despite the lack of a real plot, everything else is so over the top and outrageous that it just draws you in, from the facial expressions, to the body gestures, to the accents, to the wardrobe, to the action, to the silliness, everything. It was an enjoyable ride, i had a great time.

Nicholas Cage clearly has outdone himself this time. His performance as Count Dracula is outstanding. This is perhaps the best performance of any Count Draculas to date. He is clearly reminding the world he is a god damn actor bar none. TBH, I had written him off myself too, given that 5 years ago, he was still desperately clinging on to whatever hero roles left that he could find.

The best supporting actress imo would go to Shohreh Aghdashloo. Like Count Dracula, she plays the role of a colorful character to perfection.

The way I see it (an alternate interpretation)
22 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Because of how the story was told (it can be quite disjointing at times), it didn't feel to me like there were actually two persons -- namely, Beverly and Elliot.

It seems to me more like it's the story about this one person, Beverly, who suffers from split personality disorder (dissociative identity disorder). Beverly is withdrawn, and constantly struggles with her inner self, even when she was in her altered self of her sister, Elliot. Although Elliot died when she they were young, she continues to live on in Beverly's mind.

Subconsciously, Beverly wanted to move on with her life, but discovered in time that it was impossible. Her love and attachment to her sister was far too strong. She felt that Elliot deserved a chance at her happiness too, and so ultimately made the decision to make her altered self the dominant self.

Mediocre at best
2 April 2023
I don't understand how people could give this movie a 10/10. The action is great, no doubt. But the storyline is weak, far-fetched and illogical. They trivialized murder. They kill for no reason, yet, take the moral high-ground as and when they please.

Please people, when you write a review, at least be honest. Don't just give it a 10 because i like this actor, or that actor.

Truth be told, this movie is complete and utter nonsense. The fights and choreography were the only things outstanding in this movie.

Watch it if you have the time, or if you're learning Korean. Otherwise, avoid it. It's an action movie void of meaning and substance.

Not actually that bad.
10 February 2023
Yes, there were lots of plot holes. Yes, the CGI was bad. That's all true... But if you're looking for simple storytelling, this show is definitely enjoyable enough for you to pass your time with.

It's much better than the new Saved by the Bell, or the new Gossip Girl if you want my honest opinion, and even those shows had positive reviews. What about Will Trent? Does it have anything interesting, or intelligent? Yet, it has a strong following too.

For a non-sophisticated person like myself, I would give this show a few more episodes before declaring that it's moronic and beyond redemption.

And to that someone(s) citing Newton's First Law of Motion, if you have to travel like a million lightyears, relying just on inertia alone isn't gonna take you anywhere, you'll need thrust (for both the speed and navigation).

The backbone is weak.
23 January 2023
The story telling is exceptionally good. They intertwine different parts of the story together very well, and also explores the two sides of every coin. However, the key concept behind the story was exceptional weak. It boils down to amending a particular law. No lawyers worth their salt, nor any sane persons would agree to whatever it was that this show was proposing or advocating. I just don't like it.

Fyi, if you charge a person with a crime, the accused must be alive to defend for himself/herself. If he dies during the 'investigation', he shouldn't be scapegoated into being the 'guilty' party.

Nothing special, move along.
14 October 2022
There's nothing really special or interesting about this movie. A lot of the stuff didn't hold water, and simply doesn't add up. How it's able to get a 7.4/10 from the 25K users is beyond me.

I'm not saying there weren't redeeming qualities about the movie, because there were. The actors all played their roles well, and there's chemistry between the two leads. But the problem is, the plot's just too bland and simple to be even called plots, and it didn't make a whole lot of sense either.

Idk, maybe zoomers would find this movie intriguing, novel, and artsy? It's just not my cup of tea (didn't draw me in, like at all).

Ps: I've only ever seen two real 'black and white' films my entire life, and this doesn't count as one.

A Stallone styled movie
30 August 2022
Critics seemed to fall under one of two categories. They either, one, forgot that Stallone is a 76-year-old old man; or two, were under the impression that CGI is the end all be all of a movie.

First of all, I'm not insinuating that this is a great movie. It isn't. There were lots of quirks and inconsistencies throughout. As hard as it is to believe, some of us still watch a movie for the story. A great movie is simply a great story with a great story telling. CGI is merely a tool used to tell the story.

If you're a fan of Sylvester Stallone, this movie is definitely worth a watch. 6.5/10.

PS: It's rated PG-13 for a reason, you know.

Tedious to watch
20 August 2022
It's exhausting to keep seeing the camera switch back and forth between the actress and her body double. They should have just gone with a new actress for this sequel. Not only was the constant switching jarring to the eyes, it must have taken a lot more work to make this movie. It's hard to immerse yourself in the movie.

Ps: I quit watching wresting for a similar reason. Can really enjoy it when one of the cameramen kept zooming in and out incessantly and unnecessarily. Continuity is really important for a good viewing experience.

A parody it is indeed
28 July 2022
Nobody likes a goofy Thor. But what many people don't realize is that this story was told through the eyes Korg -- an alien rock species who has a world view that is vastly different than that of humans and gods.

The comical portrayal of the story and the exaggerated speech have many resemblance to a theater play.
