Kaleidoscope (2023)
I love heist stories, but...
Basically a good heist story, but this "random" thing... no, not for me. This didn't work for me when they tried it with that "Black Mirror Interactive" thing, either. A good story still depends on how it's told (for impact), it's just not supposed to be told in random chunks. I've watched it episode by episode, and that was disappointing.
Production value is good, most actors are really into it, but it's way too long (and that just for the sake of building enough chunks to offer the random option). Even someone like Giancarlo Esposito (who is great, as always) can't save a story that is not told well. I would prefer Netflix would stop this kind of experiments, as cinematic storytelling has a proven way of how to get the story across, like a good book does. This "interactive" thing is (and will remain) a weird myth of the nineties.
Mai Neim (2021)
Classic noir - and a really good one
If you're into dark, evolving gangster/cop-drama, where the stakes are high, and the chances low, this is a very good mini series to spend your time with. Great writing, acting and production, a nice balance between story, action and character development, growing suspense. No fat. The team really delivered. More of this, please!
Humans (2015)
Classic Sci-Fi, worth to be continued
This series' story is one most discussed, classical sci-fi themes, and it does it very well. Great acting and production. I hope Netflix will pick this up soon, to deliver a fourth season, which this great show really deserves.
Hanna (2019)
I like this
"Hanna" is a quite a good series. Season 2 does not disappoint, and gives a broader view to the whole story. Cast, music, cinematography, all of these are great. The most important characters are teenagers, placed in a grown-up story, and they tell this story pretty well.
Give me season 3, I'll be happy to watch.
Line of Duty (2012)
I'm stunned!
Somehow the writers managed to put most of the action you'd expect from cop series into dialogue and story. Don't worry, there is action, and lots of crime. But the suspense, the "on the edge of the seat factor", the complexity of the characters is far better than most detective series ever made. "Line of Duty" is brilliant, and compact (6 episodes per season, no fat). Well, we know "True Detective", and that first season was exceptional, but LOD is excellent over 5 seasons, and it's still growing (can't wait for S6!). Thrilling!
Watchmen (2019)
After all, it turns out to be good
I'm a fan of the original movie, but didn't read the comic. So I don't know how the orginal writers told the story. This given, I had a hard time following the first season of Watchmen, because most of the episodes I felt like been left in the dark, and kept wondering if this will ever clear up.
Well, it does, but you'll need some patience and just accept what they'll throw at you. One episode per week wasn't helpful either; I guess it is more pleasent to follow if you just binge watch it. In the end, it turns out to be pretty good, but I would prefer just a little bit of more continous storytelling for the next (?) season, which could push my rating to a 9.
Give me another season, I'm curious.
Six (2017)
Give us season 3, please
This series is only for you if you like military action, special forces stuff and so on. I hesitated to like it, but a few episodes in, it becomes very solid. I liked "Strike Back", and this is only a small tick behind. Season 2 makes it even more interesting, and I hope there'll be a season 3.
StartUp (2016)
Watched 3 seasons in 9 days
This is a really good tech/mob/gang thriller. It starts a tiny bit slow, because they spend time to introduce the main characters (which is good), and then starts rolling and pumping like a steam train. Good pace, constant character development, and a well written story (some minor flaws you can easily ignore) kept me hooked all the way.
Season 4, where are you???
Wir sind die Welle (2019)
Actually, this is NOT a "left extremism" version of "Die Welle"...
...and you'll have to watch all 6 episodes to get it. (S1) You should not compare it to "Die Welle" or any other movies following a similar theme (the experiment with totalitarianism), because that is simply not the point (until now, at least).
This is a well scripted and well paced story about youth anger, and what will happen if you push it too far.. The main characters are quite believable (I'm from germany, like the series, and these kids could be real for sure - your mileage may vary). The appearance of a far right german party (they only changed the name) mirrors actual political events, and is a trigger, but the story is not reduced to "far left against far right".
The cast is very good, especially the leads. They put only 6 episodes into season 1, which makes the story quite compact, and also managed to put in quite a lot of development of the main characters, which is very pleasing.
I'd be very happy to watch another season.
Joker (2019)
Stunning, with some irritations
Phoenix is brilliant, the whole feeling of the movie is just great, dark, and gritty. Just as it should be. But it's not a 10 for me, because I think it lacks in the scripting of the supporting characters; some feel really forced, just to give Fleck his stepstones. This contrast to his detailed portrait irritated me quite a lot.
But nevertheless, it's a must-see.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Nice to see Jesse again
I was wondering what they were up to, and what we got is a very nice farewell to Jesse. This is not part of the series, and so I think it's fair to rate it on it's own. BB is a straight 10 to me, this movie is an add-on to fix a loose end (which was ok as it was), no thriller or something, nothing revealing. What I liked most is that Jesse really has some friends - that made me smile :-)
Glitch (2015)
They had nothing to tell from the start
S1 starts promising and then drifts into soap. S2 stays soap. There is an interesting idea behind this, but they've buried it beneath subplots which do absolutely nothing to the story. S3 adds two characters which have no meaning at all, but get lots of wasted screentime. It is slow. For every bit of the main story, you have to wait and wait and wait... until S3, where they give you something, but not much. And after wasting lots of S3's time, they rush it to the end, without any clever ideas, which I really hoped for.
Don't blame the cast, they did well.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
Lots of great art, but mostly flat characters - except Deet
Just finished S1/episode 10. The artwork of this series is awesome, a great mixture of real puppet work and CGI. But most characters are so cliché it hurts.
The story has a dark setting to it, which I like, but the evil Skeksis are way too weird and dumb in their behaviour and talking. It's completely unbelievable they could even hold a sword, except for the emperor. The heroes are mostly flat, in their dialogue and their facial expressions (but very nice costumes).
But there's that one character, Deet - this girl saves the whole show. She's got so much depth, her expressions and actions are so believable, so detailed, and heart touching. She's just great. I have watched all episodes only to see how her story will turn out.
I don't understand why they the writers and puppet masters have put all their talent mostly into Deet, and left the others as extras. Deet shows what all others could have been, but sadly they aren't. Just compare her facial expressions to all other Gelflings, and you'll know what I mean.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Please, just follow the story before you give bad ratings
Just watching S3/E10, and this whole thing has so much impact, if you give it the time it deserves. S3 was not easy for me to get into, not easy to see what the writers are aiming at, but it develops very well. And it goes so deep.
This whole story is so close to what happens in real life (I have witnessed enough), and you know it if you look close to what's happening around you. That's the whole point of this: Look and understand what's happening, and then DO SOMETHING TO CHANGE IT! Talk to people. Make them understand. Support people who suffer, not everyone is strong enough.
Teach this your children. Ask yourself what YOU are doing to others. S3/E10 is a wonderful example of how some people completly miss how they are ruining other's lives without even knowing.
The writers, the cast and every one involved put a lot of effort in this series to deliver something very important, and it's a teen series for a very good reason: that's the age when things can really go south, in some cases even earlier. And it happens to grown-ups as well.
Do not look at this as "just another teen series". This is SERIOUS stuff we all should know about.
Warrior (2019)
In this genre, it's perfect
There's only one season out yet, but it's really amazing. If you're into martial arts/western stuff, this won't disappoint you. Top notch production value, very good cast and excellent performances, great action scenes which you can really enjoy (no epileptic edits) which hit bloody and hard as a brick, characters that have an arc, and every episode is killer, no fillers.
This is a very well done mix of classic eastern and western themes. Great show so far!
Dark (2017)
More than a masterpiece - a milestone for many years to come
In short: If you're into sci-fi and time travel stories, DARK blows everything you've ever seen or read out of the water.
In detail: I'm from germany and believe me, we're not blessed with lots of high quality shows. DARK is a german show and I was very sceptical when I heard the buzz. But I gave it a chance, and I was floored. This story is executed with so much love to detail, with so much passion in the writing, delivered by perfectly chosen actors, and it accomplishes everything so many failed to do before. This is everything you ever wanted. You can drop names like Dick, Asimov, Clarke, and you'll hit the nail on the head. Throw in some Nolan for good measure. I've read them all, seen them all, and DARK is fully on par.
This is no action flick, this is classic sci-fi in perfection. You'll need to stay alert all time, because of the complexity of the story. If the english dub is really that bad as I've read here (didn't try it), watch it in german with subtitles. Nearly every word has a meaning, every character has a purpose, and you'll have to follow with all your attention.
Just finished season 2, and it is even better than season 1. If they can keep up this level for the final season 3, and it really seems like they can, DARK might become THE BEST TIME TRAVEL STORY EVER WRITTEN.
Lucy (2014)
Brilliant!
What a great movie!
Besson delivers at his best in this perfect mix of Sci-Fi plot and real world action. There are numerous ideas in the script which make this movie stand out, entertaining and in fact, intelligent - which is what the whole plot is about.
A great cast performs incredibly well with a script that has so much punch you're hooked from the first minutes to the end. The character development of Scarlett Johansson is outstanding, and nearly completely different from her performance as "Black Widow" (which is also great).
This is NOT a revenge movie, as it was advertised by some dumb folks. It's a very intelligent action-thriller about what happens if you're becoming, well, really intelligent :-)
Godzilla (2014)
This movie is dumb and incredibly boring
OK, first review, I never meant to post one, but after this I HAVE TO :-D I liked Cloverfield, Pacific Rim, ... but this is just a total mess. No main characters, not even Godzilla (who is mostly presented from far distance). The script is non-existent. Some Monsters walk from one nuclear facility to the next and break some stuff, that's it. Nothing and no one to care about. You might say "Hey, it's Godzilla!" Sorry, no excuse for wasting my time like this. Midclass FX, a step above modern TV Shows, not more. Dumb dialogue. A few (!) decent shots. I mean: 160.000.000 $? Really? What for? Some generic SFX routines and no real cast?
Don't waste your time.
