Elvis (2022)
A horrible movie about "Col" Tom Parker
This movie totally misrepresented Elvis, because it was really about "Col" Tom Parker.
His first recording was "That's All Right" in July 1954, produced by Sam Phillips on his Southern Country Rockabilly label, Sun Records. The song was written by Arthur Crudup, an African-American blues singer from Chicago.
Elvis did not cause a riot. The song "Trouble" was NOT written until later, in 1958 for the movie King Creole and was never released as a single. He joined the Army March 24, 1958 to serve our Nation, not to escape prison.
The movie ignored Elvis' 3 Grammy awards for his religious Gospel/Spiritual music, such as Crying in the Chapel, Peace in the Valley, and his beautiful Christmas album.
The movie did a grave disservice to our memory of Elvis, an integral part of our youth.
How anachronistic and inappropriate to have hip-hop music in the movie.
The tragedy is poor Austin Butler, who tried so hard to portray Elvis, only to end up overshadowed and a patsy for Tom Hanks.
God's Not Dead 2 (2016)
Excellent Support for the Historical Jesus!
God's Not Dead 2 provided excellent support for the existence of Jesus.
Proof for the Historical Jesus was offered by two experts in the field, Lee Strobel ("The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus") and J. Warner Wallace ("Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates the Claims of the Gospels").
The acting was quite variable. Standouts included Jesse Metcalfe as the defense attorney Tom Endler, who pointed out that the separation of Church and State is not in the Constitution or the Bill or Rights, but was a phrase by Thomas Jefferson to reassure the Danbury Baptists that the government would not interfere with their faith. Hayley Orranta as Brooke Thawley held her own as the daughter whose parents ignored her. Ray Wise as the ruthless prosecuting attorney was superb. He made the point that he did not want to appeal the case because it would establish legal precedence for the historical existence of Jesus.
The barrage of Christian movies is quite interesting. Perhaps Hollywood wants to cash in and have you go to movies rather than Church to nourish your faith!
Dave (1993)
What a Wonderful Surprise!
Last night turned on the TV and the 1993 movie "Dave" happened to be playing.
What a great movie!
If every President was like the person played by Kevin Kline, we would be in beautiful shape.
Sigourney Weaver plays a moving role as the real President's wife, as well as the villain Frank Langella, the White House Chief of Staff. And Ving Rhames is perfect as the stiff Duane Stevenson, the President's personal Secret Service man, who ends up with an impressive comment at the end.
After seeing some of the absurd, horrible, and depressing movies that Hollywood has recently dumped on the American people, this flashback to 1993 was a welcome relief.
Take note, Hollywood, it is okay to have a feel-good movie with a positive ending!
God's Not Dead (2014)
The best intellectual movie of 2014
God's Not Dead is the most intellectual and philosophical discussion on evolution vs. creationism that has ever come out on film.
But this movie is viewed as controversial, because the reviewers are polarized on whether they are for or against Christian movies.
That is a shame, because this movie makes a significant contribution on the discussion of the origin of life!
Have you read the 2013 book Darwin's Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design, by Stephen C. Meyer? If not, I would recommend you consider it. Dr. Meyer has made a significant contribution to the theory of intelligent design and points out the problems with the theory of evolution. Natural selection and mutation cannot possibly explain the abrupt appearance of sophisticated organisms without any precursors as seen in the Cambrian Explosion first found in Wales.
While Charles Darwin is to be credited for his attempt to explain the diversity of living forms, he himself had doubts as to his theory.
Molecular biology and the human genome project do much to render the theory of evolution - on its own - a myth.
The requirement of extensive information for each new living organism indicates the necessity of intelligence to create the new organism. To quote Dr. Meyer, "the discovery of digital information in even the simplest living cells indicates the prior activity of a designing intelligence at work in the origin of first life."
The theologian and paleontologist Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, in his profound text "The Phenomenon of Man," combined the two concepts to support evolution in the light of intelligent design. He saw evolution as a means for God's creation of life.
As with the phenomena of near-death experiences, science and religion are not opposed to each other but meet in the end.
God's Not Dead is not a perfect movie. But God's Not Dead does much to bring the discussion of the origin of life to the fore, and deserves credit for such an erudite presentation of the subject.
Above all, the movie is inspirational, for it portrays a young man who has the courage to stand up for his Christian faith.
Left Behind (2014)
The Books were better, but the Movie is well done!
The Left Behind Book Series captured America's fascination with the Apocalypse, as portrayed primarily in the Book of Revelation in the Bible. Books have a distinct advantage, for they let your imagination run wild.
Concerned that Nicolas Cage (as Rayford Steele) would not fit in a Christian movie, I was reluctant to go when asked by a friend, but was pleasantly surprised!
And Cassi Thomson, who played Rayford's daughter Chloe Steele, was exceptional - she captured the skepticism of modern youth.
The presentation of the Rapture was gripping!
Yes, the movie does not exactly represent the book, but the overall message is there. We are now living in a time of war or rumors of war, a loss of respect for humanity, and governments vying for absolute power. Could the Apocalypse be near?
Whatever your view on the end times, the movie is an excellent reminder of what could possibly happen.
The Book of Daniel (2013)
Accurate portrayal of Hebrew Scripture
I found this a helpful review of a key book in Hebrew Scripture, our Old Testament of the Bible.
Daniel remains faithful to God in the face of an adverse and idolatrous culture, and is a good lesson for what we are beginning to face today. God sends his angels to protect his people.
The movie presents Daniel, his 3 colleagues, and the four Kings of the East in a didactic manner, one that you may wish to show your Bible class.
If you are looking for mindless Hollywood summer fare, this is not for you. This is a low-budget film designed to convey Daniel's interaction with the four Kings, and portrays primarily the first six chapters of the Book. The acting is quite sufficient.
This is a presentation of the Pure Flix Ministry, the group that recently released the hit God's Not Dead.
When the Game Stands Tall (2014)
Quality Movie on Life and Values
In addition to football, When the Game Stands Tall is also about life and values. The movie teaches the importance of developing character and virtue so that when you mature you can be someone your loved ones can depend on and you can contribute to a stable society. The movie especially teaches the virtues of faith, hope, love, and courage.
Faith is a personal belief in God. Hope is the desire for God and the trust we will receive grace for the future and to be with Him in heaven. Charity leads us to love God and our neighbor as ourselves. Prudence is a moral virtue which helps us make the right choice in every instance. Justice leads us to respect the rights of others and to give them their due. Fortitude gives us the courage to carry out what is right even in the face of difficulty! Temperance gives us self-control over our desires and appetites.
