Zoolander 2 (2016)
4/10
Just disappointing
17 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Just to start out I'm going to make a point of saying that I am a HUGE Zoolander fan. It was a true comedy classic and had me splitting me side from start to finish.

Now to this movie. I could probably count on my fingers the amount of times I laughed through the run time. To start off this movie starts with a motorcycle chase of Justin Bieber (the one from the trailer) and while I like seeing him get shot up on screen, he is not funny whatsoever. This scene just set the tone for the entire movie. The only scene that really got me laughing was the rooftop scene with Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Katy Perry, which I will admit had me really laughing hard. But it is just surrounded by subpar scenes with jokes that don't land.

Another major flaw with this movie is the acting. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are alright, but not great. Benedict Cumberbatch played a part that could've been sooooooo funny, but he was meh. Will Ferrell (who I absolutely love in most movies) I just found annoying, and Penelope Cruz is the same as usual (I've only ever like her in one movie so there's my position on her).

Ben Stiller I believe is actually a great director but this one is more or less a misfire.

Overall I just left this movie feeling meh. I don't believe it detracts from the original, but I think that if you like the original this is a movie you should skip.

A Classic In Both Horror and Comedy
16 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Classic. This word describes this movie. It is chalk-full of tributes to the beauty of old slasher films (in particular Friday the 13th) as well as a self aware spoof.

The basic premise is, a group of friends go to see an old slasher film starring the main girl's deceased mother. At said screening, an accident leads to the group being sucked into the horror movie, Camp Bloodbath. The initial plan of the group is to let the movie play out, and stick with the girl who eventually kills the killer, Billy. Obviously said plan does not work out and they then just try to survive until the end of the movie.

Now this is a spoof done right. While it is primarily a spoof of Friday the 13th, it contains many elements from other classic horror movies. The entire initial plan of the group in itself is to stick with the virgin because everybody who has sex in a horror movie gets killed. Another way this movie spoofs classic horror movies is that it basically rips a character straight out of Scream in Duncan, almost the exact same character as Randy. Past this, the ways that the seemingly dead killer comes back to life, the jump scare through a window, seemingly invincible killer and when the characters physically point out clichés such as slow-motion and black and white flashbacks.

Beyond the star power in the casting with big names like Malin Akerman, Nina Dobrev and comedy heavy-weight Adam DeVine, the acting still holds up. The special affects aren't a huge part of the movie, however they are good when used. The scripting and screenplay are absolutely unreal and certainly deserve accolades.

Overall, this movie gets a must watch label for anybody who is a fan of horror or comedy and is an overall enjoyable experience for anybody.

Goosebumps (2015)

A Good Time
19 October 2015
Goosebumps is a fun, family friendly movie. It captures the nostalgia from back when I was a kid, and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie throughout.

The essential storyline is, monsters are released from R.L. Stine's manuscripts and cause mayhem through the town. We follow as the main leads attempt to put an end to the madness.

The actors do a decent job throughout, and Jack Black really excels as R.L. Stine. Aside from him, the main cast is made up of relative unknowns, however they do an adequate job.

The special effects are very well done, and the monsters look real.

Overall, I don't feel this movie is going to win any awards, but if you just want to have a good time at the movies, then go check it out.

Black Mass (2015)
10/10
Black Mass-terpiece
14 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Black Mass is one of the best movies to hit movie theatres in a long time. It is a gangster style biopic of the famous South Boston crime lord, James "Whitey" Bulger.

This movie essentially has two protagonists, Whitey and John Connolly, a lot of side characters, and no clear antagonist, however there are clearly a lot of guys looking to take down Bulger and Connolly. Essentially the storyline puts a lot of emphasis on the relationship of Bulger and Connolly, one being a crime lord and leader of the Winter Hill Gang, and the other an FBI agent. Both of them use and abuse this relationship as Whitey essentially has immunity, and Connolly looks like an all star agent for the info he gets. In the beginning, the alliance is formed to take down the Italian mafia. Eventually they succeed and Connolly is promoted and praised by the FBI, while Bulger wins the street war he had with the Italians. All is well for both sides, until Bulger's son becomes sick. Following the death of his son, he becomes a heartless, cold- blooded, manipulative crime lord. He kills anybody, and for any reason. Naturally this takes a toll on his fellow gang members, particularly his number two man, Steve Flemmi, who has to helplessly watch as Bulger murders his girlfriends daughter, as he watches and then has to "clean up". Eventually, the bond is found and both are taken down by the FBI.

The acting in this movie was out of this world, and I would not be surprised to see two or three Oscar nods towards the cast, namely Johnny Depp, Dakota Johnson and possibly Benedict Cumberbatch. Johnny Depp has always been my favorite actor, and this is one of his best performances to date. I was extremely surprised to see the casting of Dakota Johnson as Lindsey Cyr, Whitey's girlfriend and mother of his son. I only knew the name because of the 50 shades movie which frankly I had no desire to see. She delivers though, with a breathtakingly emotional performance, and she is believable in every word she says. Joel Edgerton plays John Connolly, and is perfect for the role. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Whitey's brother Billy, a straight edge politician. He again, plays the role to perfection and I believe this is one of his better performances over his already great career. On top of that, Kevin Bacon, Rory Cochrane, Corey Stoll, David Harbour, Adam Scott and Julianne Nicholson are absolutely fantastic and add to the overall enjoyable-ness of this movie.

This movie is a classic and deserves to be treated like one. An absolue must watch for anybody.

Ignore the Ratings, See This Movie
17 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I had an absolute blast watching this movie.

Now first things first, I've never played any of the Hit-man video games. That being said, I went to see this film with a friend who's a big fan of them, and he thoroughly enjoyed all the references and call backs to the game. But since I have never played them, this review will be written with zero background on the game.

The basic story is this: there was an old program that created "agents". These agents are essentially killing machines. The creator has gone underground and disappeared so as to not have to create anymore. While both the agents and the company that he left try to find him before the other does. The one connection to him is his daughter, who has also gone underground, but has recently been found. Enter Agent 47 and John Smith. Both try to out whit the other and a battle ensues for all.

The casting for this movie is very adequate. Zachary Quinto has always been my second favorite actor since I watched Heroes, and he is incredible as the villain that he plays. Rupert Friend plays a role which doesn't require very much range in his acting, but he does it well. Hannah Ware starts the movie a bit shaky, but she grows into her role as it progresses.

The special effects are phenomenal and the fight and car chase scenes are all entertaining.

Overall I give this movie an 8/10 and leave everybody with the recommendation to watch it, it's a good time.

There is no goodness... Only doom...
7 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
2015 has been such a great year for movies, with so many great ones coming out thus far, Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Mad Max and even Pixels (personal opinion) completely astounding me already, so I feel I was right to have high expectations for this movie...

To start with, this was the first Fantastic 4 movie I've ever seen. I took warnings on the previous from my friends but when I saw the trailer for this film I decided I had to see it. What the trailer refuses to mention in that the 2.5-3 min trailer is about all there is worth watching.

It starts off like a lot of good superhero flicks, the origins of the heroes. It starts off good but at a certain point, you would like to see the actual heroes in a hero movie. Instead you probably get about 85% of the way through before they even get their "powers" let alone start to use them.

Past this there is so much more bad throughout this film, not the least of which is the acting, fight scenes, special effects or script, basically any part of movie making was butchered in this film. Do yourself a favor, skip this one.

Career Saving Movie?
23 July 2015
When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought it looked absolutely amazing... then Adam Sandler showed up. This immediately tempered my expectations for this film, but it had a fantastic plot, and enough actors/actresses that I still was pretty excited for it. What I watched absolutely blew me away.

The basic premise of the movie is this: an attempted communication with aliens is taken as a threat of war, and so they attack earth using the very games they were sent footage of. In order to defeat them and save earth, a group of people who were video game champions as kids are called upon to save the planet.

As previously mentioned, I loved some of the acting choices for this movie. Ashley Benson is a personal favorite, and despite only having very limited screen time, and not actually saying a single word, she delivers a very strong performance as Lady Lisa. Peter Dinklage is most known for his role on Game of Thrones, but I personally know him from the horror comedy Knights of Badassdom. Previously I knew him as a vulgar, "out there" comedy actor, but in this film he manages to tone it down enough to make it a (mostly) family friendly performance, while still maintaining the edge that I love about him. This was actually my first time seeing Michelle Monaghan, and I didn't know Josh Gad too well, but both of them (in particular Gad) had more than noteworthy performances.

Now finally for the biggest question mark of the film, Sandler. As the title I put to the review indicates, I believe this has the potential to be a career saving movie for him. I have previously only truly enjoyed him 3 times, the latest being The Longest Yard, and before that in Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. More recently I have wasted money going to the theatres to see his films, and even seeing what I consider to be the 2 worst movies I've ever seen in theatre in Funny People, and Jack and Jill. But he delivers a great performance here, and has made a step in earning my trust back in movies.

Overall, I'm not trying to say the film is without flaw, but then again not many films are. This is a very fun movie, and will keep you entertained the entire time. I give this movie a 10/10.

Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! (2015 TV Movie)
10/10
A Landmark in Cinematic History... Again
23 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
3 words can be used to describe this movie: oh hell yes!!!

Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No, is in my opinion, the greatest B movie ever made. Sharknado 2 was definitely going to be a tough act to follow, but they made it look easy with this film.

The premise of this movie is essentially this: Sharknado's are happening all along the eastern coastline of the USA. First starting in Washington DC, where Fin is meeting the president, and making their way down to Orlando. After the first one hits in DC, Fin has to make his way down to Orlando to meet up with his family. Getting caught by yet another sharknado, and using his golden chainsaw to make it out, he meets up with Nova and her partner Lucas (Cassie Scerbo and Frankie Muniz), and they use a sort of "cannon" to destroy this sharknado. But this is only the first one of many to come.

The casting and cameos are superbly done. First of all they brought back Cassie Scerbo, probably my favorite actress, and made her character an absolute badass. Frankie Muniz is absolutely fantastic, and has what is probably my favorite death in the entire film. He captures the real essence that the rest of the cast does so well. Ryan Newman was brought in as a recast, and she absolutely nails her part. And of course David Hasslehoff is just awesome in every part he does, even being a retired worker from Nasa. Add in smaller cameos from Chris Jericho, Jerry Springer, Lou Ferigno (who has a great Hulk-referencing line) and even have Mark Cuban come on to play the president and this film is chalk full of amazing casting.

Overall, for anybody who enjoys B- movies and wants to have a good time, this movie is for you. 20/10

Ant-Man (2015)
10/10
Unreal
21 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is amazing. To be completely honest, when I heard that Paul Rudd was cast as a hero for Marvel, I was skeptical. Was I ever wrong.

Rudd plays Scott Lang, an ex-con just getting out of prison. Trying to go straight, he finds it incredibly hard to make a life for himself being an ex-con. After taking a burglary job he finds only a suit and questions why it is locked up in a vault. Obviously events lead to him eventually becoming "Ant-Man" and trying to stop the villain, Yellowsuit.

As previously mentioned, The casting of Paul Rudd surprised me. However the script is perfectly suited to his talents, and he delivers a lights out performance. Dr. Hank Pym is played my Michael Douglas, and he delivers another fantastic performance, as a scientist trying to stop technology that he helped to pioneer from being sold to Hydra. Pym's daughter, Hope was cast to be Evangeline Lilly. She delivers a very solid performance in her role. Darren Cross, the villain, is played by Corey Stoll, and again, a lights out performance on him, making his character both crazy and very evil. Lang's "crew" is played by Michael Pena, David Dastmalchian, and T.I. and there are moments where they steal the movie, and definitely cause mass laughter. And always appreciated when an Avenger (Anthony Mackie in this case) makes an appearance.

Overall this movie was absolutely f-ant-astic (sorry I had to), and a must watch for any Marvel fan. I don't know where I'd rank it overall in the Marvel Universe, but this film is definitely near the top.

No Rating is High Enough
13 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is absolutely amazing. I went into it with sky high expectations and walked out feeling completely satisfied.

In this film, Jurassic World is a fully functioning theme park, bringing in 20,000 tourists daily. In an effort to spike attendance with a new attraction, Dr. Wu (BD Wong) creates a new kind of dinasaur, the Indominus Rex. This dinosaur is literally what nightmares are made of, a combination of intelligence and force makes it a truly terrifying thing. Needless to say, upon a safety inspection of the "cage" that it's held in, the creature escapes and brings havoc all over the island.

I personally love the casting of this movie. Chris Pratt (for all those who still doubted his leading man capabilities) plays the trainer of the raptors, and he has clearly perfected this part. Bryce Dallas Howard plays the uptight, financially minded business woman and plays it to a tee. Vincent D'Onofrio plays Hoskins, the "villian", aside from the dinosaur of course. He plays this part so well that I was anticipating his death scene from the second I saw him, and when it happened I almost started cheering. The 2 kids, Gray and Zach (Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson)created child characters which I actually found to be very likable. Irrfan Khan plays Simon Masrani, John Hammond's successor and also a bit of a John Hammond-esque character. BD Wong plays Henry Wu, and I love the choice of bringing on and actor from the original. And to wrap it up, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, Lauren Lapkus and Katie McGrath excel in their more minor roles.

The visual effects in this movie are absolutely astonishing. The Indominus Rex is absolutely terrifying and the other dinos look incredible. Isla Nublar, as per the last movies, looks incredible.

The violence and fighting blew my mind. The "final battle" had so many twists and turns with the Indominus, the raptors, T-Rex, and a short but oh so important appearance by the Mosasaur kept me on the edge of my seat because I never knew what was going to happen next.

Overall I'd say that this movie gets a 15/10.
