Love Story (1970)
I Felt Too Rushed !!!
I've seen this movie a number of times and while I enjoyed it, there were many things I would have done differently after each reapeated viewing. Firstly I felt a rushed feeling from the beginning, jumping from scene to scene in the opening sequences. I kept thinking to myself, " Let's take a deep breath here and add a few more scenes and conversations to build some emotional connection between the two main characters ". I had this feeling throughout the film. Boy Meets Girl, Boy Marries Girl... and boom, Jenny's dying. And she does so without any symptoms.
A really good movie takes to on an emotional rollercoaster and this was lacking in many respects. Let's just get to the deathbed scene so we can break out the Kleenex. Which by the way I also had a problem with. I was a bit put off by Jennifer yelling at Oliver to get off her deathbed after becoming angry with him. Not exactly what I would have done to someone in our final moments together.
Lastly death scenes are usually accompanied by emotional music heard in the background, and I felt this was another missing ingredient. Listening to Michael Legrand's music playing in the background in Brians Song as Joy Piccolo approaches her husband for the last time still gets to me after all these years.
Outside of that, no other complaints. I'll probably continue to watch Love Story down the road while I keep saying to myself... " Slow down... slow down " :)
Bewitched: Soapbox Derby (1966)
One of the better episodes.
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. A warm hearted story with a gem of a Father & Son storyline. Johnny Mills, a motherless boy wants to enter into a Soapbox Derby, but his hard working father has dreams of sending his son to collage & medical school and anything outside of his studies is wasting time. And it's Samantha to the rescue to see that Johnny's Dad shows up to help him when he's falsely accused of cheating. Although it's fun to see zany episodes in the series of Darren being turned into a frog, I wished they had veered into touching storylines that dealt people. A must see !
