Vader: A Star Wars Theory Fan Series (2018)
an objective look at SWT's Vader pilot.
Look, I know I'm supposed to love this thing, but even though I tried to, it was very hard.
It was extremely uneventful and kind of boring, and it didn't really have any originality or nuance. The writing was terrible if I'm being honest, like prequel-level bad. The performances were fine, but I feel like they were in ways flat, but that might be due to the quality of the script. The directing, while it was okay, just seemed kind of flat as well. The set design was kind of awful too, but it's excusable because it's a fan film (a high-budget fan film, but still a fan film nonetheless).
The pacing was very off, and the whole thing was very messy. It just felt like they tried to put a ton of cool scenes together instead of telling a cohesive story.
Some of the cinematography was impressive, and the VFX were well done for a fan film, which were some of the biggest positives I found.
Don't get me wrong, this series has potential, but the first episode was just so uneventful and messy. I love Star Wars Theory's video's but this fan-film was just kind of bad if I'm being completely honest.
Spider-Man: Renegade (2017)
Renegade follows Peter Parker facing a new threat, his best friend, Harry Osborn.
Spider-Man: Renegade was a blast. It was definitely not perfect, but it was still a lot of fun. Eric Elliot does fantastic as Peter Parker. He is a great director, and he's an even better actor.
Though the whole "New Goblin" thing is in a TON of fan films now, and I think this is an instance that it really works. This is mainly due to the excellent performance by Noah Perchard. He knocks it OUT OF THE PARK with this role, and he's definitely the best part of the film.
While this does use some fan film clichés, it's handled really well. It does have some bad camera shots, some editing mistakes, and script issues, but those things don't take over terribly. Great job, TheLonelySpider!
