Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Meandering and senseless with fantastic acting
The title basically sums it up for me.
The movie went very little places, both literally and figuratively. The entire story is laid out within the first 15 minutes and from there on it offers nothing shocking or of substance.
With that said, the acting and the characters were all great. Dave Bautista and Jonathan Groff stole the movie for me. They both put in a hell of a performance, which I expected from Jonathan Groff, but was pleasantly surprised with Dave Bautista's performance. The young actress was also fantastic as well. I could spend another full paragraph talking about all of the other actors and how their performances were great.
Overall, I don't think I'll watch this again. Do I regret it? Not necessarily.
The Whale (2022)
Brendan Fraser dropped a GOLIATH of a performance
I just finished watching it. Shortly after the movie finished, not a single soul moved, not even a muscle. I think everyone needed time to really process our emotions. The film was just so beautiful, heart-wrenching, and represents exactly what makes them so moving for people.
Brendan Fraser deserves an Oscar for this. There isn't a single shred of doubt in my mind. He carried the entire movie. A movie in which there is very little physical ways for Brendan Fraser to bring the character to life, which meant that 100% of it was communicated through his facial expressions and voice. An absolutely beautiful, incredibly nuanced performance.
This isn't to disparage what any of the other actors accomplished, in no means. They all did a great job.
Ozark: Fire Pink (2020)
Brilliant.
Tom Pelphrey is a treasure. His depiction of a bipolar manic man is outstanding. The emotionality of the character is truly out of this world. This episode is so emotional, nuanced, and an absolute pleasure to watch.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Satire based on reality
The movie is funny and an absolutely enjoyable watch. The pacing, timing, and writing of it are fantastic. The acting was impeccable.
There's definitely an undertone of despair because we all know that this is 100% exactly what would happen and serves as an accurate representation of society at the moment.
Loved the Bon Iver song at the end. Don't forget to stay and see the mid-credit scene!
The Guilty (2021)
Jake Gyllenhaal, Ladies and Gentleman
Jake Gyllenhaal dropped one of the best performances. This movie is kind of like 147 hours or Buried, in the fact it's basically just about Jake's character. He deserves an Oscar nom for this. The rest of the movie isn't very good.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Meandering
There was no point of anyone that isn't named Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio in this movie. They have no purpose at all. Just a meandering movie with little to no substance.
Bo Burnham: Inside (2021)
Creative, Brilliant and an Accurate Depiction of Isolation
To preface this I'll say that I've been a huge fan of Bo for a very long time. I think he's one of the most brilliant comedians, as well as just a brilliant person, who has a bit of everything in his comedy, comedy, thought-provoking notions, etc. This whole special was astonishing, I couldn't take my eyes off of it the whole time. The entirety being filmed in one room, yet he is so creative and ingenious to make it not seem as claustrophobic as it actually is. He offers realistic opinions about the times that we are in and will easily be a classic for many years coming.
Trainwreck (2015)
Bill Hader and LeBron
Those are the only 2 good things in the movie. Their relationship was really great to watch.
David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020)
The Most Important Documentary Ever Made
Sir. David Attenborough has, once again, made one of the best pieces of work that I've ever seen. He is so vitally crucial to our humanity that I wouldn't be surprised if he will be told about in history books as one of the main saviours of our way of life and species as a whole. This documentary was absolutely wonderful, with vivid imagery and well crafted and organized data to back up the narrative being told.
Your Honor (2020)
Bryan Cranston
The title says it all. He absolutely carries this show. I think there are a few good actors in this but the writing leaves a lot to be desired. The son makes too many stupid decisions and it's infuriating. Margo Martindale was an absolutely amazing inclusion.
The Brainwashing of My Dad (2015)
Accurate
A fantastic and accurate representation of how it feels to be a family member of someone who has become brainwashed and a worse human-being due to right-wing propaganda. The personal story hit home for me, while the facts presented are undeniable. The other people in the comments that voted it 1/10 are clearly still brainwashed, despite this fantastic documentary showing very clearly what is actually happening to them - which poses the question of: did they even watch it? I doubt it.
7500 (2019)
An old trope through a different lens
I didn't know what to expect coming into this movie, so I was shocked to find a gripping thriller shot. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was, as expected, absolutely fantastic, and I was blown away by the performance given by Omid Memar. The story itself gives a different perspective to those that are brainwashed and forced into doing terribly horrific things - which makes me confused on how I feel about Omid Memar's character because on one hand he is a manipulated 18 year old, but on the other hand, he is a terrorist. That dynamism makes for a very entertaining and deep character. I was sort of disappointed that they made the terrorists Muslim, as is in most movies sadly, but they forced this old trope through a different lens, and to me that made it fantastic.
Midsommar (2019)
I enjoyed it a fair bit
If you're looking for a horror, don't watch this. Half of the reviews on here are from people expecting horror and are somehow dumbfounded that it isn't horror, but a great suspense movie. This movie is amazing visually, and is very well acted. Florence Pugh put in a great performance. I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. The movie reminds me of Annihilation, in the way that it is a visually stunning piece of work, with a lacklustre pay off - but that shouldn't overshadow how enjoyable it was to watch
Space Force (2020)
Decent
The show is a fine show to binge if you're bored. There were moments where I laughed out loud about how accurate the portrayal of how "the unknowledgeable man makes all the key scientific decisions" that the US has going for it currently. I couldn't really get past the fact that Steve Carrell would slip in and out of his accent, it was distracting. I am a huge Steve Carrell fan too so I was a little disappointed. However, he brings such a humanity to the character that is so touching. At first you hate him, but then you slowly realize that he has some likeable characteristics and grows on you slowly - I call this the Michael Scott. Overall, a decent watch, but there are many areas that they need to improve upon to make it a quality show.
Manhunt (2017)
Very great storytelling and acting
I don't have many complaints about this tv series at all, the one and only being that they end every episode with this high pitched noise that rings for a while. Every episode. It honestly hurts to hear for that long.
Sex Education: Episode 4 (2020)
Ruined so much build up
This one episode ruined so much great buildup and solid relationships. Hurt to watch.
Psych: Last Night Gus (2011)
Drugged up Gus is hilarious
I was crying from laughing at Gus when he was rufied at 37:20. It's honestly one of the funniest scenes I've seen in a tv show.
Upgrade (2018)
Really great movie
I was blown away by this movie. I have no complains for a movie with such a low budget. The acting by the main character was absolutely amazing as you see him fight as STEM, while still emoting as himself.
BoJack Horseman: Free Churro (2018)
One of the best episodes of tv ever made
I can't even delve into how much I enjoyed this episode. I don't think I've ever been left this much in awe and star struck. Will Arnett deserves an award for this episode alone. Wow.
Legend (2015)
Tom Hardy should have won an Oscar
Tom Hardy stole the show on this one. He was able to show the dynamics of both brothers perfectly. It was also pointed out that he was acting off of himself; What I mean by that is that normally actors act by reacting to their counterpart, however, Tom Hardy had no one to act off of which makes this performance even more impressive.
Holmes & Watson (2018)
Horrible, horrible, horrible movie
I didn't laugh a single time at this movie and left the theatre so early.
La La Land (2016)
One of the greatest movies I've seen
Everything about this movie was astonishing. The plot, cinematography, set design, wardrobe, use of colour, and most importantly, the casting and use of music to convey emotion. A 10/10 for me. I'm not a fan of musicals at all, but this isn't just a musical; It also has an amazing story along with it. Emma and Ryan's connection is amazing to watch (as they've done so brilliantly before), and really sells the characters.
The Hollars (2016)
I loved this movie
To this day, this is one of the only movies that made me cry. It was an absolute masterpiece and Margot Martindale in this was Emmy worthy. John Krasinski as director and actor was amazing too. The whole cast was amazing as well.
Atlanta: Teddy Perkins (2018)
Amazing episode
This episode had everything in it. Sadness, harsh realism, amazing acting, and suspense. I didn't know that Teddy Perkins what Donald Glover because his performance was so amazing. LaKeith was a 10/10 and I really love his character. One of my favorite shows.
