Walker: Douglas Fir (2021)
Amazing mid-season finale.
What a tearjerker. This was an extremely intense, very emotional, and kind of heartbreaking mid-season finale that wrapped up some very important storylines ... but also left us with a lot of cliffhangers for the second half of the season.
Walker: Partners and Third Wheels (2021)
Interesting constellations
This was a great episode that tied up several loose ends after last week's emotional cliffhangers. One of the best things about Walker is that it often puts the characters together in unexpected but very interesting and entertaining constellations, and this is what happened here as well: Trey with the Walker parents, Liam with Micki, Cordell with Larry and his date ... and since all the actors have excellent chemistry with each other, this was so much fun to watch and also emotionally charged in really satisfying ways.
Dune (2021)
Beautiful cast, beautiful mise-en-scene
I read the books decades ago and found them very dry, so my expectations weren't exceptional, but this was a good movie, with solid pacing and beautiful imagery. If nothing else, the entire main cast is stunning to look at and also knows how to act, and they definitely outdid themselves with set design, costumes, and VFX. The exposition is a little slow, but by the middle of the film I was entirely captivated.
Walker: The One Who Got Away (2021)
Getting better every week
I have been saying this more or less every week since the pilot but it's true, this show just keeps getting better with every episode, and it already started out pretty strong. This season is clearly more action-filled than the last one, which I personally appreciate, but they still manage to pack so much emotion and complex interpersonal relationships into every episode as well, I'm so very impressed with how they are navigating the different strands and making sure that all the characters get attention. This episode put the focus on Micki and her past, something that was already set up all the way back in S1E3, and also added additional layers to the relationship between her and Walker. Well done.
Nomadland (2020)
Meditative and melancholic
Slow, beautiful film about the forgotten people on the borders of US society. Loved the meditative, melancholic atmosphere and the way the film showed compassion towards its characters without sliding into pity or moralization.
Leverage: Redemption (2021)
Nostalgic reboot-sequel that loses steam a little
I was ecstatic to see Leverage return and loved the first couple of episodes because they had the old-school feel of the earlier seasons, but after a few episodes the reboot started to feel a little tired and repetitive. I have to say, Aldis Hodge's absence makes itself known very acutely - you really realize how important his presence was for the team dynamic that made up the magic of the earlier seasons. Still definitely worth watching though!
Walker: They Started It (2021)
Mindblowingly good
Wow. Loved the first season already but it's amazing how the show picked up speed since the last season finale. This season premiere, they jumped right into the action and that was an excellent choice. Acting is spot-on, the new cast additions work really well with the established group, and the new storylines that are being developed are very promising. So excited for more!!!!
Walker: Four Stones in Hand (2021)
Micki in the focus
Another great episode, and it was wonderful to see the focus return to Micki and her relationship with her family and friendship with Walker. Micki and Walker just have excellent friendship chemistry, and this episode really highlighted that.
Walker: Defend the Ranch (2021)
Another fantastic episode
This episode was thrilling - just one gut punch after the next. Definitely a worthy resolution to one of the major arcs of this season. The stakes were extremely high, and the show managed to keep us on the edge of the seat. Absolutely stellar performances from everyone on the cast, as usual.
Walker: A Tale of Two Families (2021)
Everything comes together
This episode was simply incredible - all the storylines the show has built up so far tied up together in an episode that just keeps you on the edge of your seat. I expected this episode to be slower since I knew there would be flashbacks, but instead it was pure emotion and excitement every second from beginning to end.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
This ride kept dragging on
One would think that with this kind of production budget and stellar cast this film would spark, but the storytelling was bloodless and unoriginal and more than 60 minutes into the movie I still didn't care about the characters.
Walker: Bobble Head (2021)
Getting better and better
I liked the show from the beginning but it really picked up steam with this episode! The show is really coming into its own here, is finding its pace and sense of humor. We see new characters connect with each other, and after the first two fairly emotional episodes it was great to get one that was more light-hearted, funny, and action-filled.
The Old Guard (2020)
The action movie we deserved
This is like a fresh glass of water in a desert of repetitive mainstream blockbuster action movies. An original concept, an amazing ensemble cast, and an actually more than halfway interesting plot.
Walker (2021)
Even better than expected
I had tentatively high hopes for this reboot and so far it actually has surpassed my expectations. This is such a fun concept - taking an beloved classic and rehauling it in a way that is still recognizable but seriously grapples with the issues that weighed down the original show. For a mainstream family show/procedural, I am genuinely impressed with how seriously the show tackles questions like immigration and police corruption without being sanctimonious, while still managing to be touching and just plain entertaining. The entire core cast is stunningly gorgeous and refreshingly diverse.
