Stoker (2013)
Spectacularly Beautiful
Why do I love this movie? First, it is so beautifully made, it's almost like thousands of photos melting together. The scene in the beginning where she looks at her shoes and you can hear the pitter-patter of little feet and then the shoes are lined up in a semi-circle on her bed is just absolutely gorgeous. The acting is also superb. Mia Wasikawska is the most talented young actress out there and this is the best role for her to show what she's capable of. It is intriguing, stylistic, and sexy. And I love that it's also a coming-of-age story, but I don't want to go into more detail with that because of the spoiler potential. And it's also a mystery too. Where does she get the key? Anyway, the movie is spectacular for the style and acting alone but it's also an interesting story about family, mental illness, and, well, genetics.
Molly's Game (2017)
This movie should be called "Look at me, I'm Aaron Sorkin."
I get it - Aaron Sorkin did his research. But the entire movie, he was trying to prove it to us. It's very sad when movie people do not understand that meticulousness doesn't translate into entertainment. I didn't sign up for a class or two with Mr. Sorkin about How to play poker, how to plan the perfect high end game, etc. I was looking for a story, something to connect with. And it isn't here. This is a tedious, emotionless, movie - full of impeccable writing, many details that I'm sure are all correct, and characters Jason Bateman would have a field day with. I'm sure Mr. Sorkin enjoys his mansion and his swimming pool, but he's traded all of that for being in touch.
Mulan (1998)
Movie Makes Me Wish There Was an 11
This Movie Makes Me Wish There Was an 11. The plot is so amazing and the music is excellent. So many hidden gems in the screenplay and the animation. Just absolutely fantastic!
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
The beginning of the end
I'm sure if I'd never seen any other movie by Tarantino, I wouldn't be so harsh. But as it stands, This film signals the end of a truly magnificent filmmaker. By far, Tarantino's most cpensive film (more than double kill bill and about 9 times more expensive than Pukp Fiction) and staring box office darling Brad Pitt as a Jewish American warrior, to me, this film represents the end of Tarantino as an independent filmmaker. Also, taking Tarantino'sfamously witty dialogue and setting it at other times in history simply doesn't work! And it especially doesn't work during World War II Nazi Europe. And these characters simply fail and are forgettable. Most of them are uncharacteristically charmless And there is something disgusting about making the most charming character a murdering Nazi. At the end of the day, the worst thing about this movie is that it's simply not good. It makes a lot of promises it doesn't keep. It doesn't really go anywhere or at least no where good or believable. The IMDb rating and all the praise it received is classic "emperor's new clothes". Tarantino is over and this is the turning point.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013)
Feces on a wall calling itself art is still just feces.
Where to start? Watching Nymphomaniac, both volumes, is like going to an art show where feces is displayed, and everyone is standing around discussing the contours, layers, lighting, and you're standing quietly thinking to yourself, " I must be missing something. This is art! Isn't it?" Basically, the story of emperor's new clothes at its finest. I will be bold enough to say that no, I'm not missing anything. It really is just sh** I'm looking at. My final thought at the end of both volumes was "wow, those are hours I'm never going to get back." And it's not that the movie was all bad. Charlotte is wonderful, as are all the other actors. The topic is interesting. I didn't mind the nudity and I wasn't offended by any of it. There just isn't any point to it at all! None. Just when you think there may be some point in the friendship she develops with an asexual male, the story stuffs that thought into the toilet in the most confusing unnecessary way. Or when you think there is some point to her love story with Jerome, that is trashed in a very stupid way too. And if the director thinks that he is building up, just to let us down, well, he fails to build anything up since the whole movie is so boring and monotone. There just no point. And if the point of the movie is that there is no point, then why the Hell am I stuck staring at the screen for so long? Anyways, I am utterly disappointed. This is poop.
